Jennifer Graeser Dornbush
Jennifer Graeser Dornbush is an author, screenwriter, forensic specialist, and speaker. Her story creation comes from her very unsheltered childhood as the kid of a medical examiner whose office was located in her home.

As a teen, she was pretty grossed out and embarrassed about what her dad did. It was in the days before television shows made investigating death cool and exciting. Her friends learned that her dad did this for a living, and they took a great interest, which lessened the embarrassment on her part. While Jennifer does love the sciences, she always knew that her true calling was to be on the storytelling end of solving crimes.

Jennifer investigated her first fatality, which was an airplane crash, when she was eight years old, picking up chunks of skull and brain matter with her dad who just saw it as an anatomy lesson. It would end up being the first of many coroner lessons she received over the course of two decades.

From there she gathered 360 hours of forensic training through the Forensic Science Academy as well as decades of on-sight experience in death investigation.

After careers in journalism and teaching, she turned seriously to screenwriting where she connected her coroner world into her writing world. Jennifer sought out a degree at the Forensic Science Academy in Los Angeles in order to gain even more forensic training. She also wanted to earn the friendship of LA’s foremost fingerprint specialists, CSIs, DNA scientists, and detectives.

In the role of forensic consultant, she is asked frequently to consult with television writers on such shows as: Rectify, Bull, Hawaii Five-O, Conviction, Suits, and Leverage.

Teaching has remained in her blood since she is a teacher at several universities and mentors different aspiring writers from all over the world. She is a member of Sisters in Crime, the Mystery Writers of America, and the Writers’ Guild of America.

“The Coroner” harkens back to her time growing up in a tiny town and to see how a death investigation works in a rural area. She likes to expose the reality that resources in rural areas are different and limited often than they are in larger cities. Not unprofessional, rather they have to make do with what they have.

Her debut novel, called “The Coroner”, was released in the year 2018; it is also the first of her “Coroner’s Daughter Mystery” series.

“The Coroner” is the first novel in the “Coroner’s Daughter Mystery” series, and was released in the year 2018. Emily Hartford, who just got engaged and deep in her third year of surgical residency in Chicago, is shocked after getting called back to Freeport, Michigan, the tiny town she fled from after her mom died a decade previously. The local medical examiner, her estranged dad, has just had a massive heart attack. Emily is urgently needed to help with his recovery.

Emily, who is unsure of what to expect, races home. She runs the only stoplight right in the center of town and gets pulled over by Sheriff Nick Larson, her former high school love. She finds that her dad is in almost total denial of how serious his condition is. He insists the best thing Emily is able to do to help is take on the autopsy of a senator’s teen daughter whose unexplained and sudden death just rocked the entire sleepy town.

Emily hesitantly agrees to help out her dad and Nick, and gets to work, only to find out that the girl was murdered. This autopsy reminds her of the many hours she spent with her dad in the morgue when she was just a young teen. It was a time that inspired her love of medicine. And before she knows it, she gets pulled deeper and deeper into this case, as well as closer to both Nick and her dad, much to her big city fiance’s dismay.

There is a threat made to Emily herself, she will have to race in order to catch the murderer before he can strike again.

This one has a twisty plot, some family drama, and romance with a main character, named Emily, who is a vulnerable and kind, competent and strong character. Readers found this one to be quite riveting and fast paced, and novel filled with some authentic detail and a bunch of surprises throughout.

“Secret Remains” is the second novel in the “Coroner’s Daughter Mystery” series, and was released in the year 2020. Twelve years have gone by since Sandi Parkman disappeared after she was dropped off at her home by Nick Larson, her schoolmate and now the Sheriff of Freeport, Michigan. A construction crew discovers Sandi’s bones, along with Nick’s letterman jacket as well as a hair of his, he becomes suspect number one in her murder.

Dr. Emily Hartford gets called in to investigate, but the case will get personal. Nick was Emily’s love in high school, and she either has to contend he is the killer or clear his name. While she digs into this case, there is a host of other potential suspects that crops up. Tiffany, who is now a dancer at a local strip club and Sandi’s sister. A group of Nick’s jock buddies from high school. Also, there is James VanDerMullen, who is a trust funder that recently came back to Freeport.

While the autumn skies begin darkening over Freeport and the holiday season draws near, Emily has to sift through much more than Sandi’s brittle bones in order to solve this case. Is she going to be able to prove Nick is innocent and rekindle their long smoldering romance? The race is on in order to find out the truth.

This novel was well written with some unforgettable characters and an engaging plot, with twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat until the unexpected ending. The novel allows you to think you have things all figured out on who the killer is, only to inform you that you haven’t a clue. Readers cannot wait to check out more books in this series, and hope to follow these characters in future novels.
