Jessie Kwak
Jessie Kwak was born in Yakima, Washington. She has always lived in imaginary lands, from Ankh-Morpork and Arrakis to Earthsea, Tatooine, and Portland, Oregon.

As a writer, she sends her readers off on their own journeys to immersive worlds that are filled with gunfights, fascinating characters, dinner parties, and explosions.

When she is not raving about her most recent favorite sci-fi series to all of her friends, she can be found mountain biking, out exploring new worlds both abroad and back home, and sewing.

“From Earth and Bone” is the first novel in the “Ramos Sisters” series and was released in 2015. Taking a secret to the grave does not mean what it used to.

When this resurrection goes wrong in a cold Seattle cemetery, Patricia Ramos-Waites (who is a mom of three) finds herself being possessed by the ghost of her sister’s deceased lover.

God forbid the only problem she has is sharing her body with dead Marco. Just yesterday, she was worried about her teen son’s new deadbeat friends and putting all of her children through college, while today she has become the target of one Central American drug smuggling gang that desperately want to get their hands on the ghost that she’s hosting.

Patricia, on top of everything else, is starting to suspect that Marco’s either an exceptionally powerful spirit, or she’s got ghost handling abilities that have not been seen for centuries. Is Patricia going to be able to keep out of the crosshairs just long enough to fix such a botched resurrection?

“Starfall” is the first novel in the “Durga System” series and was released in 2016. An alliance prison isn’t a place for a deaf teen girl. Fortunately, Starla is planning on staying too long.

Starla Dusai is deaf, fifteen, and being held as an enemy combatant by the Indirian Alliance. Willem Jaantzen is this notorious crime lord that’s about to end a fearsome vendetta, and most likely his own life.

When he learns that his goddaughter has just been captured by the Alliance, he understands that he is her one and only hope. However saving a girl that he hardly knows means he’ll be allowing his wife’s killer walk free. Is he going to be able to set aside his anger before Starla’s time runs out?

This is the first book of Jessie’s “Durga System” series, a fast paced series of gangster science fiction tales set in this far future world where humans left their home planet in order to populate the stars, however they have yet to leave their vices behind. And that is incredibly good for business.

“Double Edged” is the first novel in the “Bulari Saga” series and was released in 2019. Thala Coeur—Blackheart— is dead.

Willem Jaantzen has been waiting to hear these words for close to twenty years now. However he was also hoping that they would hold a lot more satisfaction. Because his arch enemy died as she lived, sowing destruction and chaos, and when this mysterious package shows up on his doorstep, he realizes that she has sent him one final puzzle from beyond the grave.

While Jaantzen and his crew get plunged back into this game he believed they had left far behind, one thing becomes painfully obvious: Solving Coeur’s puzzle could be crucial to preventing the city from crumbling back into another civil war, or it could be the one thing that destroys all of them. Because this secret is not just worth killing for. It is also worth coming back from the dead for.

“The Bulari Saga” series is a part of Jessie’s “Durga System” universe, which is a fast paced series of gangster sci-fi tales set in a far future where humans might’ve left their home planet to populate the stars, however they’ve not managed to leave their vices behind. And that is very good for business.

“Ghost Pirate Gambit” is the first novel in the “Nanshe Chronicles” series and was released in 2022. Puzzling totems? Haunted space stations? Cursed relics? No job is too bizarre for the Nanshe’s crew.

Lasadi does not like strangers coming onto her ship, however she will be needing a bigger crew if she is going to steal a mysterious artifact from this dead pirate’s long lost space station. She takes a chance on a charming grifter called Raj, along with this one skilled hacker and her genius younger brother. And it’s nice? If Lasadi’s not careful, she is going to begin enjoying having a crew onboard.

Raj’s final bit of luck capsized just before he bumped into Lasadi, and this job could get his life back on track finally, just so long as Lasadi never learns the full truth about his own past. Raj is not the only one on this crew that has secrets, however, and Auburn Station holds more than just some long dead ghosts. Unless this fledgling crew can learn to better trust one another, none of them will be getting off of this station alive.

This highly entertaining series opener offers up some excellent world building, compelling cast of characters, hold onto your seat sort of pace, and a plot that hooks you right from chapter one.

“Blood River Blues” is the second novel in the “Nanshe Chronicles” series and was released in 2022. An epic race to some enigmatic treasure? The Nanshe’s on it.

When this ghost from Lasadi’s past hires the Nanshe crew to locate a crashed plane with some mysterious origins, they take the job despite the rather troubling client. Good news? The cover is Lasadi’s childhood dream: flying in the Liluri Star Run, this wildly popular off-the-grid race through the Liluri Mountains.

Soaring through the emerald jungle canyons searching for their prize, as well as the fabled Blood River, this job’s got the potential to do more than just net these five misfits a payday. It could actually turn them into a real crew. Assuming the Liluri Mountains, and the crew’s lingering secrets, do not devour them all first.

This is the second book in the “Nanshe Chronicles”, which is a series of fast paced science fiction capers filled with plain fun, non stop action, and lovable misfits.
