Author Jo Ann Ferguson (born in the year 1953) has been bringing characters and stories to life for as long as she can remember. The first stories she told were populated with her sisters and friends. In high school, she wrote her first novel, and it happily lives in the back of her file cabinet.

She was in the Army as a quartermaster officer, and finally sold her first book in the year 1987, it was a western historical romance. Since it was published in the year 1988, she has put out more than one hundred award winning and best selling novels. This came after she had three kids, and got married. She has also been called a “truly talented author” by Romantic Times.

Her work is from genres such as mystery, paranormal, and romance that is published under different pen names. Some of these include Marianne Ellis (she writes the “Amish” series with Cameron Dokey), Joanna Hampton, Rebecca North, J. A. Ferguson, and Jo Ann Brown. Ferguson’s work has been translated into almost a dozen languages and are sold on six continents.

Ferguson is also a sought after speaker, teaching creative writing classes for more than twenty years, establishing many popular fiction courses at Brown University.

For many years, she lived on the east coast, but settled in Nevada with two chubby cats and her husband.

“Sybill” is the first novel in the “Foxbridge Legacy” series, which was released in the year 1988. Sybill Wythe is left with nothing when her father dies. All she has is an invitation from Lord Foxbridge (her dad’s friend) to make her way across England in the year 1588 to become his own ward at Foxbridge Cloister.

This unease she feels is enhanced when she meets Trevor Breton, who manages the estate for the lord. He is much too handsome for her own good and he seems to hate her for reasons she is unable to guess.

Sybill nor Trevor is able to suspect the actual reason why Lord Foxbridge has summoned Sybill to the remote estate. Not to mention the fact that love and hate can easily be confused until it could be too late for hearts that are innocent.

“Rebecca” is the second novel in the “Foxbridge Legacy” series, which was released in the year 1988. Rebecca makes secret vows to a wounded man in the barn. It does not matter that he is a Tory, for he would soon be taken off to a colonial prison. Five years go by, and Nicholas Wythe comes back to claim his bride. Rebecca fell in love with the enemy, but this was a war that she was determined she would win.

“Mariel” is the third novel in the “Foxbridge Legacy” series, which was released in the year 1989. The moment Ian laid eyes on her, he knew she was a woman of distinction. Her eyes snapping blue sparks of fury, and with her chin held high, Lady Mariel Wythe silently stood around the ashes of her ancestral home. Despite being saddened by the fire’s damaging her beloved Cloister, she holds fast to her hope, her dignity, and her strength.

Reverend Ian Beckwith-Carter was certain that he had never encountered more of a beautiful sight. The handsome young minister also saw troublesome shadows around Foxbridge Cloister’s stone walls. The dubious fire was just the start of a mysterious chain of events that surrounds the country estate.

Madness makes its way through the Wythe clan, and Ian decides to put the pieces of the unsettling legend together. He plans on freeing Mariel from the bonds her past has on her, and keep her safe from potential perils in her uncertain future. Before, of course, the madness erupts once more.

“Twice Blessed” is the first novel in the “Haven” series, which was released in the year 2002. Emma Delancy feels that cozy Haven, Indiana is truly a safe haven from the life that she ran from seven years back. Then Noah Sawyer (a handsome newcomer) accused an orphan kid of stealing from him, and suddenly, Emma found herself fostering the young boy.

This is hardly an auspicious way to start a courtship, but living in Haven seemed destined to throw mischievous Sean and Emma together with Noah and Belinda (Noah’s young daughter) at each turn.

Emma is unable to resist Noah’s proposal until trouble comes knocking on his door, too, which threatens to take Belinda away from him. Emma knows her secret is going to only make matters worse. Unless her and Noah’s love can shelter the family they have been trying to make with each other.

This is an excellent author who picks themes that are both unique and interesting. She writes young girls that are both determined and strong. Ferguson does a great job of making you wonder what Noah’s secret is really going to be, it was one thing that kept some reading the book, simply hoping to find out.

“Moonlight on Water” is the second novel in the “Haven” series, which was released in the year 2002. River’s Haven, a utopian community, may have some flaws (like some unique views on marriage), but Rachel Browning truly enjoys her responsibilities as the treasurer- accountant for the community. She also has a lot of love for Katherine “Kitty Cat” Mulligan, who is the young orphan who is sharing Rachel’s home with her.

Kitty Cat turns up missing one day, and Rachel finds her playing on Ohio Star, a recently run aground steamboat close to River’s Haven. Horace Appleby and Wyatt Colton (the new owners of the steamboat) do not seem to mind that Rachel and Kitty Cat are visiting. It is just the members of the community that do not like Rachel interacting with outsiders. Their displeasure is quickly made crystal clear to Wyatt and Rachel both. She risks losing the family she’s got in River’s Haven, should she accept Wyatt’s love offer.

This is an enjoyable book, with a nice setting. This was a book that some readers got hooked on, as it has two excellent main characters that make it easy to like them quite a bit.
