Joel Rosenberg was one of the prominent authors of the Canadian-American origin. He was famous for writing fantasy and science fiction books. Author Joel was often confused with the novelist of thriller novels named Joel C. Rosenberg. The best known work of Joel’s writing career is the ‘Guardians of Flame’ series. This series is set in a fantasy world, similar to an RPG. The series helped author Joel to gain a lot of success as an author of fantasy books. Another popular novel series written by Joel is, the Keepers of the Hidden Ways book series. With respect to the science fiction genre, Joel has written the ‘Thousand World’ series, which is also quite popular. One of the well known characters created by Joel is Sparky Hemingway, who features in the mystery series written by author Joel. He had begun his writing career in the year 1984 with the release of his debut book titled ‘The Sleeping Dragon’. This book marked the beginning of the Guardians of Flame series. Joel was born on May 01, 1954, in Winnipeg, Manitoba; and died on June 02, 2011. In addition to being a noteworthy author, Joel was also an activist for gun rights. He was related the Miami Herald journalist Carol Rosenberg as an elder brother. The first published work of author Joel was an op-Ed article, which featured in The New York Times in the year 1978. This article favored the nuclear power. The stories penned by Joel have appeared in a number of literary magazines, including Amazing Science Fiction, The Dragon, and Science Fiction Magazine of Isaac Asimov. He was involved with the publishing houses of Avon, Roc, Baen Books, Tor Books, and Berkley for the publication of his novels. In his bestselling series, Joel has placed a college students’ group in a fantasy world. With each published novel in the series, Joel has described the tracing of the main characters, the changes brought in the society, and the descendents of the characters.

Joel was known for showing no compunction in depicting the killing of his popular characters. In his second popular fantasy series, Joel has made heavy use of the Norse mythology. His next series takes place in an Asian influenced fantasy setting, showing extremely strict etiquettes and cultural standards. A couple of science fiction books penned by Joel show a different set of main characters, but are set in a similar setting. Two other of his science fiction books are based on the family members of Mercenary Corps of Metzadan. During the early 21st century, author Joel decided to try his hand at writing mystery novels. He started by publishing his debut mystery book with the title of ‘Home Front’. It is the first book that depicts the character of Sparky Hemingway. Most of the novels that Joel wrote in his career were often based on the themes of freedom, protecting children, and overcoming hardships. His characters are often shown trying to achieve the goal of abolishing slavery from their world. Also, they are seen trying to deliver the message that hardships and child abuse can be overcome with determination. The heroes in Joel’s books are frequently shown finding inspiration from the historical figures from the Greek classics and the American history and folklore. Author Joel was brought up in Northwood, North Dakota. Later, he shifted to Connecticut along with his family. He studied at the Connecticut University. It was here that he came across Felicia Herman and married her. Joel was headed to become a counselor and social worker, but ended up becoming an author. Prior to the start of his full time writing career, he used to work as a truck driver, bookkeeper, clerk, cook, caretaker, and gambler. Joel had the hobbies of cooking, poker, backgammon, etc. His death occurred from a sudden heart attack due to respiratory depression. Now, Joel is survived by his wife and a couple of daughters, Rachel Hannah and Judith Eleanor.

The Guardians of the Flame novel series written by Joel Rosenberg is comprised of 10 books in total, which were released between the years 1983 and 2003. An initial book published in the series is entitled ‘The Silver Crown’. It was released by the Roc publication in the year 1985. The important characters featuring in this story include Karl, Ahira, Andrea, Ahrmin, etc. At the start of the book, it is shown that a world called Home is dwelled by wizards, dwarfs, lords, slaves, warriors, dragons, and elves. This world is prospering as the dream of Karl to achieve freedom for all the dwellers is finally coming true. However, in attacking the slaver caravans and offering the Home as haven to all the needy and eager ones, Ahira, Andrea, Karl, and their companions had made a number of enemies. The Slaver Guild had started to stir all the kingdoms in a deadly war under the leadership of Ahrmin. As a result, Karl and his comrades had to decide which side they were on. On the other hand, the elfins had claimed the valley sanctuary of Karl and were demanding loyalty and tribute from the residents of the Home. Karl feels caught between the slaver forces and the elves, who were trying to steal a treasured secret. He wonders whether he and his dwarf, human, dragon, and elf companions will be able to safeguard Home from the slavers.

Another successful novel of the series is called as ‘The Road to Ehvenor’. This book was released in 1992 by the Roc publishers. Author Joel has mentioned an alternate world in the plot, which is known by the name This Side. Something does not seem to be right in one of the towns of This Side, named Ehvenor. It is believed that some form of magic is present around the town and the rumor has spread all over. Jason Cullinane is introduced as the son of Karl, the legendary protector of the alternate world. Even though Jason Cullinane has not yet taken up his new role as the baron, he is not able to ignore the calls for help from the people whom he has taken the oath to protect. The people face problems from the sea serpents, who eat up their livestock. The wolf packs form a pact with the shapechangers and this does not look good for the safety of This Side. As Jason does not see any other help coming any time soon, he decides to go for rescuing his people along with his warrior comrades. He challenges the chaotic forces and prevents them from gaining a foothold in his land and causing problems for the humans.
