John Creasey was one of the highly popular authors from The United Kingdom who has written some of the very successful books based on the mystery, thriller, crime fiction, science fiction, short stories, and fantasy genres. He is believed to have written more than 600 novels in his writing career under 28 different pen names. Some of the characters that author Creasey has developed are quite popular these days. Some of these famous characters include The Toff, Inspector Roger West, Commander George Gideon, Doctor Emmanuel Cellini, Doctor Stanislaus Palfrey, as well as a few others. The most famous and successful among these characters is commander Gideon from the Scotland Yard. He was later used as the basis for adapting a television series called Gideon’s Way. The character was also used in a film made by John Ford, known as Gideon of the Scotland Yard in the year 1958. One of the other characters developed by author Creasey that was later made into a television series during the 1960s is Baron and the TV series was called as The Baron, featuring actor Steve Forrest in the lead role. Author John Creasey was born on September 17, 1908, in Southfields, Surrey, The United Kingdom. He belonged to a middle class working family. Creasey was the 7th child among the 9 children born to his parents Joseph and Ruth Creasey. His father, Joseph Creasy, used to work as coach maker and used to provide livelihood for the family.
Author Creasey went on to complete his schooling first from the Fulham Elementary School and then from the Sloane School, both of which were located in London. Between the years 1923 and 1935, author Creasey worked for a number of jobs related to clerical, sales, and factories. All the while, he was busy developing his writing skills and establishing himself as a noteworthy writer. Initially, he had to face a number of rejections. Eventually, he went on to publish his first book in the year 1930. The first crime fiction novel written by author Creasey was published by Melrose in the year 1932. This book depicted the story of a criminal gang. From the year 1935 onwards, author Creasey began writing as a full time writer. He became efficient in his writing skills in the following years that he was able to publish as many as 29 books in the year 1937 alone. He had become such a phenomenal and a fast writer at that time that he believed he will be able to write a complete book even if he gets locked in a glass box. Author Creasey created one of his popular characters named The Toff in the year 1938. He introduced this character in the book titled ‘Introducing the Toff’. The character was then featured by him in 59 more books between the years 1938 and 1978, making the novel series one of the longest running ones at that time. Creasey had described The Toff or The Honorable Richard Rollison in the form of an amateur sleuth and an aristocrat.
The character of Dr. Stanislaus Palfrey was developed by author Creasey during World War II. He described him as a secret agent working for a secret intelligence agency in England. The book series featuring Dr Palfrey comprised of a total of 34 novels between the years 1942 and 1979. In the year 1962, author Creasey received an Edgar Award in the category of the Best Novel for his book titled Gideon’s Fire. This was followed by a Grand Master Award in the year 1969. Author Creasey had an equal number of publishers as his pen names, however, his most enduring collaborations were mostly with Hodder and Stoughton and John Long in The United Kingdom. He died on June 9, 1973, in Salisbury, Wiltshire. After his death, his family transferred all his legal rights and copyrights to the Owatonna Media. This entertainment company further sold the copyrights to the Coolabi PLC in the year 2009. However, it retained with itself a master license in audio and radio rights, which are licensed commercially in The United Kingdom as well as abroad. Author Creasey’s son, Richard Creasey, continued his legacy as he also went on to become an established author. Some of the techno-thriller books written by him are popular like many of his father’s novels.
One of the well known novel series written by author John Creasey was known as the Patrick Dawlish series. This thriller series consists of 50 novels in total published between the 1939 and 1977. All the novels in this series feature Patrick Dawlish as an agent who first works for the British Intelligence and then in the Scotland Yard. One of the initial books published in this series was titled as ‘Ware Danger’. This book was released by the Corgi publishing house in the year 1941. The main characters described by author Creasey in the book other than Patrick Dawlish include Julia Danaway and a few others. At the beginning of the book, it is shown that Patrick Dawlish is urgently summoned to The Clarion Hotel located in London. Due to this, he gets snatched from his wartime posting. Patrick is subsequently thrown along with a couple of his old army friends and the mysterious and beautiful woman named Julia Danaway. Julia appears to be interested a lot in the three army officers. Soon, Julia encounters a murderous attack on the King’s Cross Station by an electric trolley. This incident is witnessed by Patrick Dawlish and his two army friends. After this, he starts wondering whether it was just a chance to meet in a crowded train. He begins to dig deep into the attack on Julia and tries to catch the one who tried to kill her.
One of the other early books written by author John Creasey in the Patrick Dawlish series was released under the title ‘Death on the Move’. This book was published in the year 1945 by the Corgi publishers. At the start of the book, it is shown that Patrick Dawlish is asked to take over a case after a second dead body is discovered in the city. A couple of months earlier, a lady was found strangled to death after a dance show. The investigators had discovered a strange design that was newly tattooed on her body. The investigating officer, Superintendent Bill Trivett, soon caught the murderer and arrested him. He turned out to be the dance partner of the lady, who was immediately put behind the bars. But, when the second murder takes place at the same place, Patrick Dawlish discovers the same tattoo on the dead body of the new victim. This forces him to believe that the man whom Bill Trivett had arrested as the killer in the first murder might not be the actual killer. Immediately, he launches his investigation to catch the real killer and make him pay for his crimes.
