John Michael Greer is a bestselling and award-winning science fiction, religion, and environment author of more than 50 titles.
He has written some very popular titles such as “Ovates and Druids,” “The New Encyclopedia of the Occult,” and “Circles of Power,” which are some of the most popular occultic books.
For more than a dozen years, Greer worked with the “Ancient Order of Druids in America (AODA)” where he had been appointed Grand Archdruid.
In addition to his works on ancient spirituality and the occult, he has also authored eleven science fiction and fantasy novels and ten nonfiction books on the future of industrial society and peak oil.
He regularly blogs on his website on a range of topics that include the future, magic, and politics.
Michael Greer was born in Bremerton, a Navy town in Washington, and grew up in the suburbs of South Seattle, where he began writing as soon as he could hold a pencil in hand.
He started writing very early and believes the dictum that all writers usually have a million words of bad stories in their past pretty much sums up the several decades between his published book and the attempt to become a published author.
Back when he was a teenager, he used to geek out on the occult and used to always have a stack of books that he checked out from the library section he knew his mother would never imagine he visited.
While most of his peers were getting into first-generation video games and computers, he was practicing rituals and studying occult philosophy.
Since this was hardly a practical career path, he spent a few years working dead-end jobs while trying to become an author.
Things would start coming together for him in 1995 when a publisher accepted “Paths of Wisdom,” his debut book that was then published in 1996.
John Michael Greer currently makes his home in Cumberland, Maryland where he lives with Sara his spouse.
He works with the 1912-founded Ancient Order of Druids in America as the Grand Archdruid.
John still continues to write although in recent times he has narrowed his focus and for the most part writes on forgotten traditions, insights, ideas, and practices from the rubbish heap of history.
For the most part, he spends his days writing, which is something that he really loves to do. In addition to his novel and blog posts, he also pens a lot of astrological forecasts.
A World of Gods by John Michael Greer is an investigation into the superstructures and underpinnings of the Pagan perspective of the world.
In this work, the author offers a primer on the kinds of themes and ideas that need to be included in any discussion on the philosophy and theology of Neopagan religions.
Much of the work is in the form of a dialogue with existent ideas in comparative religion, philosophy, and theology.
Much of the time, it seeks to find a middle ground between too little and too much reference to scholarly work to find an intellectually rigorous yet comprehensive middle ground.
It is all about being part of the dialogue that has been going on for centuries. The author asserts that for many years, polytheist spirituality has not had a voice in that dialogue, even though a lot of valuable stuff has been talked about.
For Greer, the re-emergence of polytheism in the West as a valid religious tradition may result in that heritage being reassessed.
The author feels that reassessment does not necessarily have to mean rejection since an attentive ear to earlier phases of the conversation shows that polytheism has its place.
John Michael Greer’s work “The Ecotechnic Future” is about how to thrive and survive in the post-industrial age. As we approach peak oil, John Michael Greer helps you envision the transition to a sustainable ecotechnic world from an industrial society.
He is all about never returning to the past but creating a society on a sustainable resource base built on relatively advanced technology.
The author fuses human history and ecology to challenge assumptions held by alternative and mainstream thinkers about the evolution of human societies.
Just like ecosystems, human societies have evolved in unpredictable and complex ways and hence it does not make sense to impose rigid ideologies in evolutionary change patterns.
For Michael Greer, social change has to by necessity explore the variety of pathways that for the most part we do not have control over. He proposes an exhilarating and troubling prospect of a future that would be open-ended.
Nonetheless, he asserts that this would need a deliberate acceptance of diversity so that we can have access to many different approaches to how to evolve.
With some deep insights into the future of industrial society and peak oil, this work offers a solid analysis of how we came to this point in time and a practical toolkit to make the best preparations as we head into the future.
“Monsters” by John Michael Greer is a work in which the author takes you on a thrilling journey into the impossible.
It is a work that combines Western magical philosophy, folklore, and actual field experience to make for a chilling collection of folklore and fiendish facts.
Monsters is a good lookover and primer of the common things and creatures that may cause you a scare at night and which a practitioner of the occult may refer to as good or ill fortune depending on their context.
It is clear that the author has done a lot of research on all these creatures as he also includes a bibliography on the back.
Still, the best thing about the book was the approach as it is not hyper-paranoid and will not tell you to go lock yourself in a chalk circle and banish several times a day.
He also does not go the other way by getting all fluffy as he instead presents what he has found using historical writings and the experiences of others in addition to occult theories on how to deal with monsters.
In the end, he also offers some practical tips on how to investigate the paranormal and how to deal with such incidents.
