John Scalzi is an American online writer and Science fiction writer and he is a former- president of the Fantasy Writers and Science Fiction of America and was born May 10, 1969. He is well known for his blog whatever’ where he has written on a various types of topics daily since year 1998 and his Old Man’s War series’ and his three novels and they have being nominated for Hugo Award.
In year 2008, John Scalzi won Hugo Award predominantly based on that blog for Best Fan-writer which he has used for several charity drives. In year 2013, his novel known as Red-shirts won the Hugo- Award for Best Novel. John Scalzi has written columns and non- fiction books on different topics such as video games, finance, astronomy, films, and writing. He has also worked as a creative consultant for Star-gate Universe which is a TV series.
Biography
John Scalzi was born and spent his early childhood in California specifically in Los Angeles in the suburbs of Glendora, Covina and Claremont. It is well recorded that he was in high school with John Marshall who is a noted blogger and both were year 1987 class members. They attended The Webb – Schools of California and after that John Scalzi went to The University of Chicago where he became a classmate of David Auburn who is Pulitzer Prize winning play-writer. For a short time, Saul Bellow was a thesis advisor to John Scalzi who abandoned him when he later became Student Ombudsman for the same University. He was the editor- in- chief of The Chicago Maroon during his year 1989 to year 1990 school year.
John Scalzi graduated in year 1991 and was offered a job as the film- critic for Fresno Bee newspaper and later became a humor columnist. He was later hired as the in house editor and writer at American Online in year 1996 and together with his dear wife Kristine Ann Blauser, they relocated to Sterling – Virginia. He had married Kristine in year 1995. In year 1998 John was laid off and since that time he has being a full time freelance author and writer. Later in year 2001, John Scalzi, his wife Kristine and Athena Marie who is their daughter born in year 1998 relocated to Bradford – Ohio.
In year 2010, John Scalzi was president of the Fantasy Writers and Science Fiction of America and on the ballot he was the only nominee. Previously in year 2007, John had contested as a write in candidate but he was not successful. His term came to an end in year 2013 after deciding not to contest again.
Currently Jon Scalzi, his dear wife and their daughter lives in Ohio and they have a number of pets and one of the pet got media attention in September 2006 when John taped – bacon to it. It is a result of the media attention that John now maintains on the Whatever’ site a web – repository for All Things Bacon links.
Career
Fiction
Old Man’s War was John Scalzi’s first published novel. In the novel, citizens of earth who are seventy five years old are recruited and they join human colonies defense forces in space. He noted unintentional similarities to Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein. After debuting online, the novel came to publication. John Scalzi was able to serialize the book in December 2002 on his web- site and this later resulted in an offer by Patrick Nielsen Hayden who is a senior editor of Tor Books. It was in January 2005 that Old Man’s War hardcover edition was published and it was nominated in March 2006 for the Hugo – Award for Best Novel.
‘Agent – to the Stars’ was john Scalzi’s second published novel. It was prepared in year 1997 and in year 1999 it was placed online as a shareware novel’ by John Scalzi. The book was later released asa freeware’ in year 2004. It was in July 2005 that the book was available as a limited edition, signed hard-cover from Subterranean – Press. In October 2008, it was published in paperback by Tor Books for the first- time.
The Gost Brigades which is a sequence of The Android’s Dream and Old Man’s War was released in year 2006. The Android’s Dream’ did not sell well as compared to Old Man’s War series because of depending heavily on flatulence jokes. John Scalzi was later awarded the John Campbell – Award for Best New Writer in August 2006.
The Last Colony is the third novel that was set on the same universe and it was released to press in April 2007 and it was later nominated for Hugo – Award for Best Novel in year 2008. Old Man’s War fourth novel – Zoe’s Tale which presented different views of events that are covered in Last Colony was later published in year 2008 and in March 2009, it was again nominated for the Hugo – Award for Best Novel. Redshirts- Novel with Three – Codas which is his year 2012 book won Hugo – Award for Best Novel in year 2013.
Non-fiction
John Scalzi has several non-fiction books such as The Rough – Guide to Money Online that was released to public in October 2000 and it featured various tips on using online financial tools. Others include The Rough – Guide to Sci-Fi Movies that was released to public in October 2005 and the book covered science – fiction films and its history and listed fifty significant fiction films. The Rough – Guide to the Universe was released in May 2003 and it was an astronomy book for intermediate and novice stargazers.
Online writing
John Scalzi began writing the whatever’ in year 1998 which is a more or less daily blog and also registered his domain name Scalzi.com. He has written various topics on the blog but topics of writing and politics are common and he also use the Whatever to solicit non-fiction and fiction submissions.
On March 29, 2007, John Scalzi became the first Campbell- Award winner to be a nominee for a Hugo Award in the Best Fan – Writer category for his online – writing on the field of science fiction. Later in year 2008, he won Hugo – Award for Best Fan Writer and he became the first person since year 1970 to be a nominee for the award and the Best – Novel Hugo award at the same time.
John Scalzi has established himself as a excellent writer on fiction, non- fiction, and other online writing over the years. He has won many awards showing his excellent work.
