John grew up in Portland, Oregon. Some of his early books include Transmaniacon and Dracula in Love, as well as a cyberpunk novel called City Come A-Walkin. He also wrote the Song Called Youth series for Warner Books, which was released once more by Prime Books as an omnibus.
In 2012, his apocalyptic novel Everything is Broken was put out by Prime Books. PM Press published his novel New Taboos in 2013, the same year that HarperCollins/Witness published his novel Doyle After Death, a book about Conan Doyle living in the afterlife. His novel Wyatt in Wichita came out in 2014.
The author also collaborated with Mark Tremonti, a rock musician, to adapt his rock opera A Dying Machine. The gig was done in June of 2018.
He is also the lead singer of Sado-Nation, a punk band. It was not his first gig as a musician. He served as the lead singer in 1978 to 1979 for Obsession, which recorded on Celluloid Records. The band was post-punk funk rock. This is when he was living in New York City and Paris in the eighties, and also joined the band Panther Moderns. He performs with The Screaming Geezers. He is noted for writing 23 lyrics recorded by Blue Oyster Cult.
He resides in the area around Vancouver and Washington. He is married, and he and his wife Micky share three sons. Their adult twin sons are named Byron and Perry and the younger son is Julian. He also wrote horror novels like Dracula in Love and Cellars, which are cited as influences on the splatterpunk horror movement and the bizarro movement. He is also known for his cyberpunk novel Stormland. He was lauded as a postmodern Poe by Larry McCaffery, a critic. His story collection Heatseeker has been lauded for its cyberpunk status. He also came up with a story collection where the stories grew increasingly bizarre, appropriately titled the Really, Really, Really, Really Weird Stories, and it has developed a cult following.
he also collaborated with several artists on short stories, including Neuromancer author William Gibson as well as Bruce Sterling and Rudy Rucker. Other writers have praised his imagination, honesty, and crossover pioneering, including Peter Straub and Clive Barker, among others.
He has written many novelizations and tie-in novels over the years. This includes the work Constantine, based on the movie starring Keanu Reeves, as well as BioShock:Rapture, which was a prequel for the video game story provided in BioShock. He also wrote Halo: Broken Circle and the apocalyptic novel The Other End.
His story collection Living Shadows was published in 2007. His 2009 novel Bleak History focused on dark urban fantasy in a New York that is marginally more futuristic. Other books that have come out from this author include Extremis: The Most Extreme Stories of John Shirley and Everything is Broken. He also wrote the surreal book High, which was based on another book Three-Ring Psychus that came out earlier and has come out as an e-book. He also wrote the story collection Feverish Stars.
His recordings Broken Mirror Glass; The John Shirley Anthology were released by Black October Records in 2013 in a two-cd compilation. The set covers his work from 1978 to 2012. His rock album The Screaming Geezers was released in 2020 from Reprehensible Records.
John Shirley also released a novelization of A Dying Machine, a sci-fi rock opera. He belongs to Church of the SubGenius, a satirical religion.
Eclipse is the first novel in the Song Called Youth series by John Shirley. If you love science fiction novels or want to try something new, check this book out!
In the beginning of the twenty-first century, Shirley presents the reader with a western Europe that is war torn and has been bombed relentlessly. As a result, it has gone from stable to unstable.
Russian militarism is on the rise and NATO has totally folded. Trying to restore order, The Second Alliance has come in. The multinational police force is approved of by the government, but in the process of rushing in to repair the peace, they have shown themselves to be totally power hungry.
With fascist leanings, the only way to deal with the totalitarianism of the alliance is to fight it. Enter the New Resistance, a group of rebels. These include the guitarist Rick Rickenharp and John Swenson, a mole. Can they overthrow The Second Alliance and restore balance?
A new take on old themes, this is a punk version of science fiction that must be read to be enjoyed to the fullest.
Eclipse Penumbra is the second novel in the Song Called Youth series by John Shirley. If you liked the first book, check the second one out too!
The Second Alliance was created to create order, and they planned to hold on to that power once they seized it. The New Resistance’s one goal was to defeat the Second Alliance, and now they are doing the same back.
No resistance is part of the Second Alliance’s plan. Getting rid of the rebels makes way for their Project Total Eclipse, which would create a new world order with itself at the head of it.
With a plan to create scapegoats and project their own violence, the Second Alliance needs to be stopped. The fate of humanity hangs in the balance. Who will triumph? Read this novel to find out!
