About Jonathan Brooks
American science-fiction writer Jonathan Brooks is well known for his unique subgenre of game-lit and fantasy novels. Drawing readers in, he sets his stories in fantastical worlds that transport them to far off lands, giving them a fully immersive experience. This goes hand-in-hand with the subgenre of game-lit, which focuses on stories surrounding virtual worlds and the characters within them. These cyberspaces are extremely realistic, giving the characters a world to explore, as they attempt to progress through these artificial gaming environments.
There’s a few books and authors working within this market, but Jonathan Brooks really does make it his own. Pushing the concept forwards to new and interesting places, he captures the imagination of the reader, whilst simultaneously saying something unique of his own. Setting himself apart, his stories are exciting and entertaining, ensuring that the reader continues reading the whole way. There’s plenty of characters who also really stand out, giving the stories a sense of grounding, allowing the audience to relate to the books overall.
Accessible to everyone and not just those with knowledge of gaming, Brooks is easy to read, while also tackling plenty of big ideas. The themes and concepts in his work operate on a number of different levels, really bringing his unique worlds to life. Journeying with the characters, readers are made to feel as if they’re a part of the whole experience, allowing them to fully invest themselves in the action. With so much more to come in the future, he doesn’t appear to be ending any time soon either, as his writing career continues upwards and onwards.
Early and Personal Life
Growing up with a keen fascination in both reading and writing, Jonathan Brooks would develop a passion in literature from an early age. Always reading, he would continue to work on his craft throughout the intervening years, creating a style and tone that was very much his own. Bringing in other interests from his life, such as gaming, he would use them to help inspire his writing and his work.
In time this would lead to him building a fully fledged writing career, as he would go on to reach readers from around the world. Continuing to progress throughout his education too, he would largely focus on his love of science-fiction, using it to drive his career forwards. Currently still writing to this very day, he continues to put out work regularly, with a lot more to come on the horizon.
Writing Career
The first book that Jonathan Brooks would publish was titled ‘The Last Mar’ and it was a stand-alone fantasy novel. Brooks would later go on to produce a number of long-running series, ensuring his readers would continue to come back for more time and time again. His first series would begin back in 2017 with the ‘Glendaria Awakens Trilogy,’ starting with the novel ‘Dungeon Player’ opening the series.
Following this he would go on to write the ‘Station Cores’ series too, beginning with ‘The Station Core’ in 2018. He’d also go on to write alongside fellow GameLit author Jeffrey Falcon Logue, as they’d create the ‘Body’s Dungeon’ series together starting in 2020. Maintaining a presence both online and off, Brooks also has a Patreon where he updates his fans regularly, continually putting out work on a consistent basis.
Dungeon Guild
First published in 2018 on the 8th of March, this would come out on the Kindle platform to much acclaim. Marking the third book in the ‘Glendaria Awakens Trilogy,’ it’s a GameLit series of novels that follows the progress of players in a virtual fantasy world. Knowing the genre and the world of the novels by this point, Brooks really makes the most of the premise here to compelling effect.
Heading out of the dungeon in pursuit of those that had stolen the Dungeon Core, Devin searches for the thieves. Following a feeling buried deep within his chest, he heads to where he feels it may be located in a far off distant land. Soon he finds the help of others who want to assist him in his quest, as he’s joined by players looking to return the core before the mission timer runs out. Will they be able to manage their quest in time, can they return the core, and what will become of the Dungeon Guild?
Ending the trilogy, this provides plenty of closure for the reader, drawing all the story and narrative strands to a satisfying conclusion. The characters are all well drawn and the world-building is definitely well managed every single step of the way. It really feels immersive for the reader, allowing them to fully invest themselves deep within the narrative and world.
The Crafter’s Dynasty
Originally coming out in 2021 on the 11th of July, this would be the sixth and final book in the long-running ‘Dungeon Crafting’ series of books. A series set firmly within the GameLit subgenre, it features a virtual fantasy world which players explore and progress through. Published through the Kindle platform, this works on many different levels, giving readers exactly what they want whilst telling a unique story.
Recently recovering from the effects of the Core shard consuming her mind, Sandra has now managed to develop bonds with nearby Dungeon Cores. Doing this she pacifies them too, and it’s no longer the case that the surrounding areas are filled with dangerous monsters outside the dungeons. Now it seems that there’s an old foe out to destroy Sandra, and she must do all the crafting necessary to get what she needs to defeat them. Will she be able to do it all in time, can she possibly hope to defeat them once and for all, and what will become of the Crafter’s destiny?
It’s an easy-going and entertaining book, making for a satisfying conclusion to the overall series in a fun and engaging manner. The books themselves should be read in order, and they rely on a GameLit narrative with them being set in a virtual world. Delivering on the promise of the original books, it really has everything that fans could hope for, making for an excellent example of the genre.
