The Recruit
The Recruit is the first installment in the United States Marine-Corps book series by renowned author, Jonathan P. Brazee. In the Recruit, author Jonathan P. Brazee introduces the readers to Ryck, a marine Corp, and Lysa his twin sister. Ryck and Lysa are more than determined to get out of the farm because it had already claimed the lives of their father and mother. From the look of things, the farm is also going to claim their lives. Lysa has always had the looks; thus she has never had to struggle financially because her boyfriends have been taking care of her. The produce harvested from their farm is not enough for one person. Thus, Lysa and Ryck decide to sell the farm and see whether they are going to clear off their corporate debts. Lysa has been seeing someone for quite some time now, and she wants to see whether they can take the relationship to another level.
Nonetheless, Ryck does not think that Lysa getting married is a great idea. Despite having his doubts, he still goes ahead and gives the union his blessings. Now that his sister is now under someone else’s care, what is he now going to do? Being employed by one of the biggest corporations on the planet does not seem like a great idea. Ryck opts to look for something that is a little bit more challenging. Thus, he decides to join the legion. As Ryck was waiting to join the legion, he meets with a longtime friend along the way. His friend had decided to join the Marine Corps. Ryck and his friend begin to exchange a few words, and before long, Ryck decides to sign up for the Marine Corps. From this point, the book picks off. We meet once again with Ryck during his enlistment all the way to the basic training.
Author, Jonathan P Braze has a clear understanding of the Marine Corps basic training and brings it clearly in the novel. Nonetheless, the Marine Corps training in this novel is much similar to the one conducted by the United States Marine Corps; however, the difference is that the Marine Corps training in the novel is done in the space. Ryck eventually manages to survive the basic training and is eventually sent to join his very first unit. Considering that the Recruit has been set in the future, the fighting scenes takes a different shape to what we have been used to. The marine corps in the novel can get close to the enemy and even kill them, but once they get seriously injured, they can be effortlessly repaired. New arms or legs can be grown from where they the old ones were cut off in the life of duty.
Furthermore, the new combat suits that the soldiers have been given has the ability to shut them down until they are transported to a hospital. Once you have recovered, you are given a new combat suit that will assist you in getting over the trauma that you may have experienced. During the story, the protagonist Ryck is wounded on numerous occasions. Nonetheless, Ryck still recovers as expected and gets back into the center of the action.
The Sargent
The Sargent is another exciting read by the author, John Brazee. Despite the fact that the Sargent is set in the future, the actions and emotions are much similar to the ones that a trainee would experience in today’s military. In the Sargent, we follow one Ryck Lysander, who has just joined the Marine Corps. Ryck has just completed both the basic and advanced military training. Ryck went through a rather rigorous ordeal; however, he eventually managed to make it through. There is a time when any young person has to make the decisions, whether he can be able to meet the requirements of the marine or quit. Ryck eventually gains the courage to go through the Marine Corps entry training and from the look of things; he is heading to become an outstanding marine. In The Sargent, Lysander gets to know the true meaning of taking care of other people.
In the Sargent, Ryck Lysander is now a squad leader. Ryck is responsible for their lives; thus he has to do all he can to ensure that he does not make wrong choices. Readers are definitely going to fall in love with the Sargent because it shows the interaction between Ryck and those who are around him. The life of a marine normally involves his platoon, squad and platoon leaders as well. Ryck eventually finds himself in complex situations. The action and the realistic descriptions of most of the weapons were brilliantly done. Author, Brazee has done a brilliant job of explaining the military terms and weapons too. Thus, the reader does not necessarily need any military background to read this novel.
With that said, the Sargent is a great addition the Marine Corps book series. The interaction and character development in the Sargent definitely bring the readers into the novel.
