The Beast Within
The first in Elite Series kicks off a teaser: the reader gets to know what would happen to Conner Moore three days in the future and then transports them back three days earlier to get to know the events that unfold resulting to what would happen six days in the future. But it isn’t the meeting with the beautiful, but strange Laren that triggers these events, and the author slowly reveals to the reader that everything goes back way farther to his father whom he’s never met. Actually, the reader can trace the origin of these events back farther to the truce agreed upon by the Five Families, commonly known as the Elites.
The story is told mainly from Corners point of view in the third person, and it slowly reveals to the reader the presence and the origin of the Five Families and the role Conner plays in this secret society. Conner is like an all-around high school star; he is good natured, good in sports, has a good girlfriend, and protective of his friends. He didn’t know his biological father and was raised by a single mother struggling in her flower store to make ends meet. In the first few pages of the novel, Conner’s main concerns are his former girlfriend who wants to remain friends with him. She informs his mother that he doesn’t want the scholarship so that he can stay with her and help her out. Then he meets Laren and everything else changes. The first section of the story moves swiftly through the brief scenes brilliantly connected.
The story gets even better halfway the story as paranormal elements are flushed out, and Conner synchronizes up with the events to happen three days in future. The story also gets even sweet second half as we get to learn more about the origin of the five families, and also witness a trial where Conner is forced to save his friends and much more.
Jonathan Yanez has done a fantastic job creating a character-rich and plot-driven story. While Conner’s becomes friends with his ex-girlfriend, his friendship with Laren transforms into a relationship and grows stronger each day. But its certain that Lauren is keeping a secret and after an encounter with Morgan, Conner soon realizes that there’s more going on than he ever knew. He also learns that the Elites are after his new girlfriend and so he’ll do whatever it takes to save her.
Alan Price and the Colossus of Rhodes
When history was still young, a war was waged in heaven. Those defeated were sent to earth, and now they use their knowledge of the ancient world to retaliate, and a new battle is about to begin, a battle that the humans may not survive.
The fallen ones have been satisfied with their quiet lives here on earth since their exile from Heaven. Rules have been set forth to protect humans from the Fallen, and they are monitored day and night. But new information is set to initiate a mutiny. The Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, is the key to a secret that will give an upper hand to the side that acts fast.
We meet Alan Price, a man ravaged by an army of problems. Depression, fear, anxiety, and danger are a few of the endless issues that haunt him daily. But his only purpose to the world is only revealed when his darkness becomes total. He is more than just a human, and as his abilities reveal themselves, everything unfolds most unexpectedly.
Michaels understands that war is looming as the rumors in the wind hint that the Fallen are regrouping ready to make a move. Therefore the archangel must unite his forces and recruit those capable of fighting the battle that could mean an end to humanity as we know it. One name on his list holds a very special meaning. Alan is Nephilim, a human chosen to serve the heavens and given special superhuman talents. But in this man, Michael senses superhuman abilities he doesn’t understand himself. Alan is sent on a mission that will see him travel from Rhodes Island to the Saharan desert in an effort to cripple the Fallen plans to conquer both Heaven and earth. The adversary is intelligent and cruel, with no regard for either human or superhuman life. But to save the heavens and earth, Alan must first silence the demons that haunt his soul.
Jonathan Yanez the Nephilim Chronicles series debut novel Alan Price and the Colossus of Rhodes is a wonderful debut. The main character, Alan, is an orphan who’s always been bullied, growing up in a group home that’s neither welcoming nor loving. He always gets picked on at school, suffers from depression, sees a therapist, but none of these seem to work. The story is narrated in most parts from a single POV but at times the narration changes to the antagonist POV and other characters.
This is an urban fantasy set in the modern world and its evident as the author at times references to things like World of Warcraft. The narration is well paced; the tone is lighter but more adventurous Plenty of mythos and lore in this world is based on Christianity. There was war in heaven when a greedy angel wanted too much power but was cast out to hell.
