Ohagwu is known for writing novels full of heartwarming narratives divine inspiration, suspense, and happy endings. She loves to put ‘by God’s grace” in front of her name, probably crediting God for the journey in life that has had her live in two different continents. According to the author, it is only through God’s grace that she has been able to commit her life to public service, confront rough waters, and take the opportunity to help those that are not so fortunate. Having had a very difficult upbringing she asserts that her life turned around when she met Jesus. Her faith made it possible for her to avoid multiple derailments, and instead embrace and embody love, hope, grace, and second chances. Joy Ohagwu’s novels are some of the finest Christian suspense, as they are a perfect distillation of the author’s feelings with gripping narration and wordplay, that will keep the reader flipping the pages from the first page to the last.
Joy Ohagwu has always loved books and growing up could be found curling up with a book for as long as she can remember. Growing up in Nigeria, she loved nothing more than books, with movies coming in a close second, especially if they had lots of suspense and action. In fact, she asserts that she probably got into the writing of inspirational and romantic suspense stories because of her early interest in the genre. She got her Political Science Degree from the University of Ibadan, before she moved to the US to undertake her International Affairs post graduate degree from American University in Washington D.C. Over the course of her study, she has been awarded with many prizes for student leadership, groundbreaking academic research, and academic excellence, where she has fourteen individual honors. Professionally, she subscribes to the American Christian Fiction Writers in Washington DC chapter. She typically writes her novels on weekends and evenings or any free time she gets. She asserts that all she has achieved in her writing career is as a result of God’s faithfulness. Ohagwu currently lives in Maryland.
Joy Ohagwu’s Christian Suspense novels are action packed novels that involve anything from car crashes, fires, shootouts, and all out suspense that will keep the reader flipping the pages. Through it all there is the underlying message of the road to salvation, that is so eloquently put to touch the heart of one seeking spiritual nourishment. Ohagwu draws her readers into the lives of the story, showcasing God’s grace, forgiveness, and love through the characters who undergo challenges, but through their faith live through it all. These are not purely fictional type of struggles as they are normal life challenges that show the walk of faith of her characters. For instance, throughout the novels of the New Rulebook series, the lead protagonists run from a mysterious evil force known as the New Rulebook. The New Rulebook is something of a modern TRON gone rogue. Another good example would be something akin to Anakin Skywalker quest to control the universe gone to the dogs. With a good idea going bad when it falls into an evil man’s hands, the protagonists in the narratives have to fight to survive in an increasingly hostile world. However, the lead characters of the novels have something in their favor: their loyalty to each other and their faith in God, which always sees them through any kind of trouble. Most of the novels end in a cliffhanger showcasing the victory of the protagonist and setting the stage the story of the next novel in the series.
“The New Rulebook” the first novel of the series explains The New Rulebook as a cutting edge technology invented to control crime, but which fell into the hands of evil guys. Now Ruby finds herself framed for a murder she knows nothing about while she is on a regular pickup/delivery job about town. She calls police officer Robert who also happens to be a lifelong friend and the only person she believes can help in her predicament. What follow is a high tension drama as the two try to track down while at the same time outrun the persons that set up Ruby. Just who is behind the suspicious murder and why did they choose Ruby as their fall girl? She stands to lose everything from a technology that had promised to solve all problems. In all the suspense and drama, Ohagwu weaves a strong case for faith particularly in Jesus, as a source of strength to face all challenges in life. She also mixes in hints of romance between Robert and Ruby and the tension of friendship that is stretched to breaking point. Could Ruby get beyond friendship and forge a romantic relationship, or will she hold back in fear and lose Robert’s love?
“Snowy Peaks” is the exciting and uplifting second novel of “The New Rulebook” series of novels by Joy Ohagwu. It is an excellent novel that tells of the continuing fight between good and evil. The author packs in the action right from the first page to the last with romance galore, fights, makeups, making of new friends and running away from the bad guys. The novel is set in Western Maryland, in a small town called Snowy Peaks, that has been taken over by evil forces led by one evil man that seems to be invincible. The only person that could perhaps match him is Ruby who is called into the town. But given that the man has had the time to entrench himself into the town and has been practicing his darks arts for months, will she be able to outfox and stop him in his tracks? Ohagwu expertly weaves in the dark forces, which she counters with spiritual forces from above as the characters fall back on their faith to get them out of trouble.
