The Dark Backward
This is the first book published and written by Julia Buckley. She has made an impressive and Exemptional debut in this novel. Unlike many writers who take an easy road to their first book, she doesn’t take an easy road. The main character in this book is thirty years old Lily Caldwell, and she portrays her as a tough, unforgiving and angry and all those with good reasons. Lily is a police officer who always has a gut to stick with her gun and who respects the code of ethics. She remains faithful to her belief.
Lily partner’s Danny Donovan has been killed in a routine traffic stop where Lily is also shot and almost killed. She is believed to have been technically dead for seven and a half minutes. Immediately after recovery she announces that she has seen a shooter face on a vision. She says that Governor Nob Steven is the killer, but no one would believe her. There is no connection as to why Steve would have the motive to gun down a police officer in the middle of a night. Her persistence belief that Steve is the shooter cost both her Job and her husband’s Grayson, who she apparently divorced after he fails to believe her. Despite the lack of support and resources, Lily continues to find a connection between Governor Steve and the cold cases she and her partner has been investigating before the street shooting.
Her investigation leads to a connection between Emily, a seventeen-year-old school teacher, and Steven and evidence start to pile up. However, collecting evidence for a governor who is accustomed not to lose would not be easy. Luckily two people the governor’s wife and his personal assistant began to question his integrity, and they play an important role in her investigation.
Julia Buckley has written this book as a standalone thriller; she has crafted the characters in a way that makes this book a great read. She has touched the dark emotions and issues without fear.
The second book by Julia, namely Madeline Mann, is a series that revolves around the life of a journalist Madeline Mann. She is a cute character whose curiosity and skills draws her to an investigation murder her friends as well as the disappearance of her school mate.
In the first series of Madeline, Mann mystery shows the character of this young investigative reporter. Nobody takes her seriously until her high school friend Logan disappears. When she starts investigating about Logan Lanford, everybody begins taking notice of her. This is probably because everyone is a suspect in his disappearance. Logan neglected wife is the first suspect, but she also finds that Logan’s Brother and the shady Mayor might have been involved in his disappearance. Apparently even her boyfriend seems to have some resentment towards Logan and his reputation. When investigating for his old friend she is also searching for vindication of her own career choices to be far away and independent from her family who apparently threatened to drive her crazy. She is, however, able to solve her first mystery.
The second series is about her solving a murder investigation of her former English teacher sister Moira friend. Having heard of Madeline’s investigative skills portrayed just a month ago Sister Moira requests her to investigate the death of Sr. Joanna death that happened ten years ago. She explains how she has been having recurrent dreams about his friend and is convinced that she was murdered. She is able to unravel sister Joanna’s past along with other people involved in her Murder. She is also able to reveal the Joanna death as murder and at the same time reveal a murderer. Madeline investigation occurs in between her daily life, which goes around family friends and her boyfriend. This has a significant effect the readability of this book and Buckley has done an excellent job connecting the murder and the life of the main characters.
In the third Madeline mystery, Madeline marries her fiance, Jack. Their wedding seems to be fine, but Madeline admittedly say that they are fools- fools for love and fools for getting themselves in dark secrets of Grand Blue. Apparently, they have landed in Grand Blue, Montana after their wedding and things start to go awry from the moment they land. Finn Flanagan is a local restaurant owner who has been murdered, and the town is full of characters that have a motive for his murder. Madeline becomes part of the investigation, and her husband is equally supportive to finding the truth.
Julia Buckley main character in all her books is convinced to do the right the right thing regardless of what’s on the way that makes any reader anxious to turn the pages of her books. Her first two books show the likable female lead that is very encouraging. Julia Buckley is a proud author all portrayed in her books- short books and series.

I just recently discovered your Writing Apprentice mysteries and love them!!
I love listening to your books. I found you by accident looking at different mystery authors. I started with Lena London and have finished that series. Started with Big Chill. You keep my attention from beginning to end and the characters gone on each book and stay interactive through out. I wish all of your books were in audiobooks also. I have difficulty hold the books. But I enjoy most are. Thank you so much for your books.
I just finished reading the first two books of the Hungarian Tea House Mystery and now on the third. Really enjoyed the first two and am sure the third will be just as good. Hope you keep writing this series, really am enjoying and now I hope to find your other series, if I can.
Your hungarian teahouse mysteries are fantastic. They make me feel like my hungarian family is still here. Please keep writing them.
