About Julia Cooke

Early and Personal Life

Born in 1983 on the 21st of July, Julia Cooke would grow up in New York, writing and reading constantly from an early age. This would grow over time, as she would go on to find her own voice as an author, with something important to say. Attending Georgetown University, she would learn her craft, continually progressing and developing as an artist and writer.

Speaking in many different capacities, she’s featured on NPR, as well as speaking at numerous different lectures on multiple issues. This has seen her become hugely influential over time, being one of the foremost figures currently working within her field to date. There’s lots more planned for the future, as she continues to write, publishing in different publications and writing books.

Writing Career

One of the first books that Julia Cooke would write was titled ‘The Other Side of Paradise’ which would look at the lives of Cubans. Looking at the lives of younger Cubans, she would analyze the cultural legacy they’ve inherited and what it really means. This would see her make a name for herself, with her going on to become a well recognized figure for many in the publishing industry and beyond.

She would later go on to write about the legacy of the Pan Am women in her 2021 book ‘Come Fly the World.’ This would take a look at their history, and she’s gone on to write for various publications, including Salon and Tin House. She’s a gifted writer winning numerous awards and nominations, continuing to speak and write, carrying onwards and upwards.

The Other Side of Paradise: Life in the New Cuba

Originally published through the ‘Seal Press’ publishing imprint, this would first come out in 2014 on the 1st of April. A stand-alone work of non-fiction, this features Julia Cooke looking at her time in Cuba, in what is one of her first books. It’s an easily accessible novel that’s readily available, making it a must for anyone looking for a window into this world.

Heading to the capital of Cuba, Julia Cooke charts her time spent in Havana, meeting the younger generations of the people living there. From young anarchists to children of the elite, she meets everyone and studies the impact of the Cuban legacy many years back. Looking at the history of the country, it charts the many shifts and changes throughout the past, and what it all means for the future. Told from her own perspective, Cooke creates a vivid portrait of the country, and where it’s heading in the future.

It’s an interesting story looking at the many strata’s of Cuban society, making it accessible to the world at large. Cooke herself is an engaging presence, writing in a style that really draws the reader in and keeps them there throughout. There’s a lot to unpack here, and it shows the country from one particular unique perspective, giving the subject context and vibrancy.

Come Fly the World: The Jet-Age Story of the Women of Pan Am

First brought out in 2021 on the 2nd of March, this would come out through the ‘Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’ publishing label. It would be a work of non-fiction looking at a period in American history, studying the history of the Pan-Am airways. The once famous world renowned flights were infamous for their glitz and glamor, ushering in the jet-set age of cosmopolitan travel.

Charting the history of Pan Am and the women that made it, this sees their part in how they formed the company and made an impact. Running between 1966 and 1975, they were required to have college degrees and speak two languages, as well as being savvy and of a certain height. Not only that, but they also had to be under 26, leading to a selection of women who would lead the way in the jet-set life. They would also be an integral part of the Vietnam war, evacuating many of the US troops there, along with the children of Saigon.

It’s an extremely interesting read, and Julia Cooke makes sure to never hold-back on detail, giving it an added layer of depth. Making sure everything is fully fleshed out, she really brings the era to life, giving it a level of excitement that must have been felt living through the period. Capturing it in all its glory, she shows the complete story, with everything on display in one completely compelling book.
