Julia Ember
Author Julia Ember lives in Seattle with their city based menagerie of pets, all with literary names. She is a world traveler that’s visited close to seventy countries. She’s got a lifelong appreciation for classic literature and history and holds an MLitt in Medieval Literature and BAs in History and English Literature.

Julia was born in Chicago, Illinois, however she lived much of her childhood outside of London. She was ten years old when they first moved, so she doesn’t remember too much about the adjustment period. She is a dual citizen, and really loves living in Scotland. It has beautiful castles and countryside. It is much more socially progressive than where she grew up in America, which she loves. Edinburgh is very queer friendly and multi-cultural in ways the suburban town she was born in wasn’t. It also has national health service, and is a place to live she recommends.

She has always been the sort of writer that writes in bursts. She will get an idea for some project, then it is a lot like she is possessed. She just writes. And writes. All until she has a draft, putting all of the ideas that she has into it. But, when she doesn’t have any ideas for a project, she just has to wait until the inspiration comes back. Usually this means that she needs to travel.

Her “Seafarer” Duology feature Norse retellings of “Peter Pan” and “The Little Mermaid”. These books were heavily influenced by the postgraduate work Julia did at the University of St. Andrews in Medieval Literature.

“The Seafarer’s Kiss” was nominated for Bisexual Book Award finalist in the category of Speculative Fiction in the year 2017, and was named a Best Quer Book by Book Riot.

Julia’s debut novel, called “The Seafarer’s Kiss”, was released in the year 2017. Her work is from the fantasy and young adult genres.

“Unicorn Tracks” is a novella and was released in the year 2016. After a brutal attack drives her out of her home, Mnemba (sixteen years old) finds a place in the successful business of Tumelo (her cousin), where she soon excels as a guide. Surrounding herself with the mystical animals that inhabit the savannah and nature not only gives Mnemba’s tracking abilities the chance to shine, it aids her in hiding from those horrible memories that haunt her.

Mnemba is employed to guide Mr. Harving and Kara (his daughter) through the wilderness while studying unicorns. Both of the young women are drawn to each other, despite Kara being betrothed. During research, they learn about a conspiracy by some poachers to capture the Unicorns and exploit their supernatural strength to build a railway. Together, they have to figure out a way to keep the creatures that Kara adores safe. All as they resist the love that they’ll never be able to indulge.

Mnemba was a strong character, as is Kate, and together they make a cute couple who have a forbidden, sweet, and passionate romance with each other. This is a short and fast paced read that some readers felt was written just for them.

“The Seafarer’s Kiss” is the first novel in the “Seafarer” Duology and was released in the year 2017. Ersel, a nineteen year old mermaid and who’s long wondered what lives out beyond the ice shelf, discovers the life she wants when she befriends and rescues Ragna, a shield-maiden stranded on the merman’s glacier. However Ersel’s suitor and childhood friend catches the two of them together and he gives Ersel a decision: face justice at the hands of the glacier’s savage king or say goodbye to Ragna.

Ersel, who is determined to have another fate, gets help from Loki. Such deals, however, are never like one plans, and the outcome is her exiled from the only protection and home that she has ever known. In order to save herself from perishing out in the underwater and barren wasteland and get reunited with the human that she has come to love, Ersel has to try and outsmart the God of Lies.

“The Navigator’s Touch” is the second novel in the “Seafarer” Duology and was released in the year 2018. Shield-maiden Ragna, after invaders went and killed her family, destroyed her village, and took her prisoner, has a strong hunger for revenge. As a trained warrior, she is ready to battle for her home, however with just a mermaid and a crew of disloyal hired guns to help her, she knows that she needs some new allies. Guided by the magical maps located on her skin, fighting mutiny and storms, she sets sail over the Northern Sea.

She calls on the Jarl in Skjordal to help her, however despite her fighting abilities and rank, the Jarl only sees her as a young girl that is unworthy of help and too inexperienced to lead. In order to win the respect of her crew and prove herself to the Jarl, Ragna takes on one dangerous expedition. When she’s forced to choose between her crew’s fate and her own freedom, what’s she going to sacrifice to save what remains of her home?

“Ruinsong” is the first stand alone novel and was released in the year 2020. Two young women that come from rival factions have to work together in order to reunite their country, while wrestling with their feelings for one another.

Her voice was once her prison, and now it is her weapon. A powerful mage named Cadence, in a world where magic’s sung, has been forced to torture her country’s disgraced nobility at the bidding of her ruthless queen.

However, when she gets reunited with her friend from childhood, a noblewoman with links to an underground rebellion, she has to finally make a decision. Follow in the queen’s footsteps and become a monster herself or take a stand to free their country from oppression.

The romance here is sweet and its setting is incredibly lush. This is a gorgeous novel and carries with it a strong message about the decisions that we make and the people we end up becoming.
