Author Julie Czerneda has written around 5 novel series in her writing career, one of which is the Special Imperative series. This series consists of a total of 3 books published between the years 2004 and 2006. The first novel of the series was published under the title ‘Survival’ and was released by the DAW publishing house in the year 2004. The plot of this novel revolves around the lives of the main characters Mackenzie Connor, Nikolai Trojanowski, Emily Mamani, and Brymn. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, the author has tried to use her talent to build characters, races, and an exciting universe that helps to draw a number of readers. The story of the novel shows a magnificent tale with interstellar intrigue in which a scientist from Earth gets caught in numerous terrifying conflict of the species. Dr. Mackenzie Connor is introduced as the senior co-administrator of the Norcoast Research Facility. He is referred to as Mac by her colleagues and friends. She seems to be a trained biologist and considers her work to be her life. The research facility was located in a place which was very well suited for her style of working.
The Norcoast Base was located in an ideal location beside the Tannu River, which speeds down the western side of the Rocky Mountains and meets the Pacific Coast. At one point, she and her colleague Dr. Mamani, were settling to monitor the current year’s salmon runs, when they were interrupted by the arrival of Brymn, who was the first member of the Ohryn alien race, who set its foot on Earth. In his race, Brymn used to work as an archaeologist and the major portion of his research work focussed on a region in space called as the Chasm. It was that part of the universe that which was considered dead and all the worlds on Chasm were deprived of any life forms. But there were some traces that showed that civilizations used to exist and flourish in the region once. Brymn comes in contact with Mac and takes her help because of her profession as a biologist. This discipline was forbidden in his race and he thought that she might be able to help him find the creator of Chasm, with the help of her expertise in biology. But Mac did not seem to have an interest in the studies of things that were from the outside world. Also, she politely tries to make Brynm understand that she was not willing to abandon the research work on which was working in the Norcoast Base. However, the right to make a decision was taken from away from her when the base was attacked by some devastating and mysterious entities and Emily gets abducted. Soon, Mac is forced to flee along with Brymn and the special agents protecting him. It is revealed later that the Earth might be under attack from the legendary alien race Ro, who were also responsible for the destruction of Chasm. Feeling cut off from everyone she knew, Mac finds herself in a great danger. She is asked to learn everything that could possibly help in preventing the human race from getting extinct.
The second novel of the series was published in the year 2005 by the DAW publishing house. It was called as ‘Migration’ and continued to feature the main characters in the form of Dr. Mackenzie Connor, Dr. Emily Mamani and Brymn. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, everything gets changed as the Norcoast Base gets attacked and Emily gets kidnapped by Ro. In the process, Mac nearly lost life while trying to escape from the Dhryn home world peacefully. The Dhryn race seems to be trying to abandon their home world and setting out on a dangerous path of destruction in the civilized space. As they keep on destroying planet after planet, the IU organizes a meeting of all the interspecies at a secret place, in order to share information about the Dhryn. After studying the available data, Mac begins to think that the destroying actions of the Dhryn might be because of something deadly and simple, which was the imperative of migration. Now, even if she is right with her theory, she and her team fac the most difficult task of stopping the Dhryn from causing further more destruction.
