Author Julie Miller writes paranormal, mysteries, thrillers, and romance, and has been on many bestselling lists. She became a Harlequin author in the year 2000, when “One Good Man” (which is an Intrigue) was released. She grew up in Missouri and is a teacher, who lives with her husband (that is a young adult writer and teacher), a son, and all kinds of different pets. She has been called the resident “Grammar Goddess” within her local writing group (called the Prairieland Romance Writers).
Miller has won two Daphne du Maurier Awards and a National Readers Choice Award. She has also been given RT Book Reviews Career Achievement Award for Series Romantic Suspense.
She writes the “Taylor Clan” series and “The Precinct” series (the original, plus “Task Force”, “Brotherhood of the Badge”, and “SWAT” spin off series). Some of the characters that appear in the “Taylor Clan” series also appear in some of the novels in the “Precinct” series.
“Partner-Protector” is the first novel in the “The Precinct” series and was released in the year 2005. T. Merle Banning (a detective) is working a case involving the Holiday Hookers homicide and set out to investigate things based only on the cold hard truth. But not on the psychobabble that the crackpot consultant from the police department is spitting out. Her name is Kelsey Ryan. Despite their attraction, he does not believe the visions that she has of a murder.
She provides a break in the case that makes him unable to discount what she has to say. It is one for a case that confounded the Fourth Precinct for many years. The trail leads down the dark and seedy back alleys of Kansas City. This beautiful and flamboyant woman has captivated T and his scarred heart. He is able to get into her isolated world. Are they going to be able catch the killer before he kills them?
Fans of the novel find that the story is able to pack a punch for them, surprising since it is from Harlequin. Julie Miller and Merle are well drawn characters. This is a great way to start of a series, and was different than some thought it would be. Plus, you get to see the romance that Merle and Kelsey develop throughout the book. This is a novel that you will not at all want to put down.
“Police Business” is the second novel in the “The Precinct” series and was released in the year 2005. Detective A. J. Rodriguez is working on a crime and finds there is no evidence that the murder even happened. Claire Winthrop, who is hearing impaired, swears that she found a killed employee in the high rise building that her father owns. She also said that she could identify the killer. Little evidence points to the case being open and shut that involves a spoiled socialite that wants attention. A. J. senses, however, that there is a cover up at play. They are drawn together, the cop helps calm the shell shocked witness with a kiss. It is such a powerful one that it captivates both. A. J. pulls her into his world and figures he should stick to police business or the killer could kill his witness.
Fans of the novel find that this was their favorite of the series; it has great characters and Claire is a strong character and does what she wants out of life. Some liked the way that A. J. worries about the class difference and age difference that exists between him and Claire, but was still in love with her. They also liked that she did not see the differences at all, just two people that should be together.
“Search and Seizure” is the third novel in the “The Precinct” series and was released in the year 2006. Dwight Powers feels he has to help the baby (who is named Tyler) that was abandoned in his office, and Maddie McCallister (who is the child’s beautiful guardian). She wants to find the kid’s missing mother and Dwight is just the guy to do it. He shall be her hero. The tough assistant district attorney is going after a black market ring involving selling babies. Not to mention, battle some of his demons. Protecting both Maddie and Tyler means that he has to remember the wife and kid that he lost all those years ago. And the family that he still wants to have.
Fans of the novel found that this story has quite a bit of suspense to it. It is great reading that keeps you engaged throughout; it has two characters that you will get to know and love. Some found that they liked the fact that the main characters were older, as they also were and they need excitement like the main characters. Some loved every word of it. This is a series that is easy to read, and one that fans will follow for many installments. Julie Miller writes as a friend.
“Baby Jane Doe” is the fourth novel in the “The Precinct” series and was released in the year 2006. Shauna Cartwright (the Commissioner) already knew that heads would roll when she opened up the Baby Jane Doe case. Then she faces the wrath of KCPD by getting Eli Masterson (who is maligned) to solve the case. She sees the man in action during a bank robbery gone bad and thought he would face her enemies for her.
She has a scandalous attraction to the Internal Affairs investigator that pushed her authority in his awful need to keep her from getting murdered by a sadistic killer. Getting together with someone in the department breaks a lot of the rules the department has.
Fans of the novel found that it has a great story line and that Eli and Shauna work great together. There is a great relationship that Julie Miller writes. Once again, she wrote yet another winner. This is a series to follow, as each book is a book hard to put down. The novel pulled them in and kept them flipping pages until they found out what happened; their chores or work did not get done, but they were able to finish the novel.
