Julie Tatham is a published author. She also wrote using the pen name of Julie Campbell. She passed away July 7, 1999.

Julie was born Julie Campbell on June 1, 1908 in Flushing, New York. She has the same birthday as Mart Belden, one of her characters. She moved and traveled a lot when she was young since she was the child of an officer in the Army. She won her first writing contest with a short story while she was residing in Hawaii.

Before she married she worked at the New York Evening Post as its assistant society editor. She would later go back to the paper for a period of time. Later, she met her future husband and it was love at first sight. She got married on March 30, 1933 to Charles Tatham Junior. They would collaborate on a variety of articles and stories for magazines together. She had two sons with him and took the name of Tatham as her surname, dropping the Campbell. Together they lived in a remodeled farm house that was located in the Hudson River Valley.

It was around that time that she would begin writing a fictional series of novels centered around a character called Trixie Belden. She wrote this and the Ginny Gordon series under her name of Julie Campbell. The series were designed to be read by younger readers and were very successful. The Trixie Belden series did so well that once she had left the series there were still ghostwriters hired to continue it. In modern times the books have experienced a revival in popularity and the series has been reissued.

She would also take over the Cherry Ames series and writing it once World War II had ended. She reinvented the character in a way, making her a heroine in a mystery series that took place during a time of peace. In addition to being a writer, she had also worked as a hotel hostess and secretary before going full time.

In the 1940s, the author actually had her own literary agency. Western Publishing had wanted literary agents to track down writers that would be able to write books in the genre of adventure and mystery that they could then affordably set a price on and market to children. Campbell (Tatham) came up with four series that she pitched. Two of them would be written personally and the other two would be written by John Henry Cutler and Hal Burton, both her authors.

The series she wrote came out under the name Julie Campbell. They were the Ginny Gordon and Trixie Belden series. Five books came out in the Ginny series from 1948-1956. The Trixie Belden series saw six books be published from 1948-1958. Around that time, the author also had the chance to take over different series. She took the helm for the fictional series of Vicki Barr and the Cherry Ames series. She would write a dozen books for both series. Those series were written under the name Julie Tatham.

Cherry Ames in the series has the setting of Tucson, Arizona, just like the Trixie Belden series. The last book written in 1955 by the author was set in the same setting as the Belden books, Sleepyside-on-the-Hudson. The setting was based on her Hudson River Valley adjacent town that she was living in. She based the Crabapple Farm on her own house, Wolf Hollow.

The author also got a credit in 1954 for writing a book called Rin Tin Tin’s Rinty, but she had no idea why that was the case. She denied having written it in an article while also wondering why Whitman would decide to give her title credit when she had not written it.

Once she had gotten done with the Mystery in Arizona book in the Trixie Belden series, she decided that it would be a good time to stop work on the series. She used her literary agent experience to try and help her to get a royalty negotiated when it comes to the upcoming six books. This would work since she did have ownership of the characters, but she would also have to give up the series’ originator rights. From that point on, Western Publishing chose to go ahead with the series with all of the new books being penned under the name “Kathryn Kenny’.

She would also give up the Vicki Barr and the Cherry Ames series. This was in part because the author Helen Wells chose to come back to writing the books once more. When it comes to the Ginny Gordon novels, they simply were not chosen to be continued. Some say that she also was looking for a new writing position in 1957 as part of the Stratemeyer Syndicate. Evidence was found in the archives that indicate a correspondence between the author and Edward Stratemeyer’s daughter, Harriet Adams. The letters were written by the author looking for a writing position.

Julie Campbell is the creator and writer of the fictional series of novels centered around Trixie Belden. The first book of the series was published in 1948 and is titled The Secret of the Mansion. The second book came out in 1950 and is titled The Red Trailer Mystery. There are well over two dozen books in this classic series.

The Secret of the Mansion is the debut novel in the Trixie Belden series. In this book, readers get to meet Trixie for the first time.

One thing Trixie knows about the summer is that she’s expecting it to be dull. Her older brothers have gone to camp, and she’s anticipating a quieter season without them.

When the daughter of a millionaire moves into the mansion next door, Trixie is intrigued. Maybe this summer won’t be so boring after all. When a runaway hangs out in Sleepyside and an old man is rumored to have hidden a fortune in his house, Trixie finds out that this summer might just be the most exciting yet.

The Red Trailer Mystery is the second book in the Trixie Belden series. In this story, her friend has chosen to run away. Jim is the heir to a giant fortune, but doesn’t now that.

Trixie sets out with her friend Honey to try and find him. But will they get derailed by a mystery? Read this book to find out!
