Justina Ireland Best Books
Promise of Shadows
The promise of Shadows is a fantasy novel, which has elements of Greek mythology spread throughout its pages. In the initial chapters of Promise of Shadows, readers get to learn the main reason why Whisper, Zephyr’s sister’s execution takes place. Due to a forbidden romance between Whisper a vaettir, and Hermes an Ethereal, Whisper pays the ultimate price; her life. In the world, that author, Justina Ireland creates, partly human creatures known as vaettir must not fraternize with Ethereals, full gods. Due to anger, Zephyr ends up killing Whisper’s executioner, a feat that no creature could ever achieve. Nonetheless, to make the kill, Zephyr had to use her dark and forbidden powers.
Thus, Zephyr finds herself in Tarturus, the worst part of the underworld. While at Tarturus, Zephyr learns that she is the prophesied Nyx, a warrior who will protect her species from Ethereal Tyranny and maintain balance in her world as well. After realizing that the Ethereals were going to kill her, Zephyr manages to escape Tarturus with the assistance of her enigmatic protector and friend, Cass. Other creatures who assist Zephyr in escaping include an attractive friend from childhood, Tallon and Blue, his brother. The group forms a ragtag gang, which ensures that Zephyr is safe at all times and avert any plot thrown on her way. Nonetheless, despite penning an interesting novel, author Justina Ireland does not deliver when it comes to romance. Other elements such as Zephyr struggling to accept that she is a hero has been brilliantly done.
Vengeance Bound
More than five years ago, a revered man, abducted a young girl, one Amelie Ainsworth. When we meet with Amelie Ainsworth, she is sixteen years old. During the period that Amelie was in captivity, she was more than willing to do anything to escape from her abductor. As luck would have it, two fairies Megaera and Tisiphone come to her rescue. However, Upon rescuing her, Tisiphone and Megaera, ask Amelie to host them in her mind. Now, the two fairies live inside Amelie Ainsworth’s head. The two fairies guide Amelie in her new mission as she brings all the guilty parties to justice. When Amelie returns home, she settles in well with her family. One day an unscrupulous psychiatrist destroys Amelie’s life and that of her family. In retaliation, Amelie embarks on a mission where she destroys the lives of men, who are guilty of crimes and atrocities against children, and women with the assistance of her two companions.
Eventually, Amelie decides to settle in Wes County P.A, where she changes her name to Cory. The main reason why Amelie changes her name to Cory is because she wants to lead a normal life. However, what Amelie does not know, is that the faeries have new plans for her. Cory knows that this time around, she might not be able to escape even with the assistance of her friend, Niko.
Dread Nation #1
In Dread Nation, author Justina Ireland delivers a subversive, explosive and necessary narrative, infused with her trademark fantasy laced alternate-history. When the dead begin to prowl the streets of America and the battlefields of the Civil War, America changes forever. The unexpected horrors of the Civil War, in turn, brings forth a new nation and a new type of slavery. The newly formulated laws now force both the Negro and the Native children to first attend combat school. At the combat school, children receive all the necessary skills and training required to kill the dead. As Dread Nation begins author, Justina Ireland introduces the readers to Jane McKeene, a student of Miss Peston’s School in Baltimore. At the school, Jane McKeene is working hard to ensure that she becomes an Attendant; fully trained in etiquette and combat. Once she graduates from the school, Jane will protect white Americans who come from the wealthiest families.
However, for girls like Jane, who is of Negro descent, the new laws are a chance for a better life. As Jane is about to complete her education, all she hopes for is to return to her home in Kentucky and spend the rest of her life with her family. As time goes by, some of the native families in Kentucky begin to go missing and the protagonist Jane, eventually finds herself entangled in one of the biggest conspiracies in America’s history. Jane brushes shoulders with some powerful adversaries who are willing to kill anyone, who may attempt to reveal their secret or come in their way. With that said, author Justina Ireland crafts a poignant, smart and thrilling novel, which explores important topics such racism, slavery, and oppression, while at the same time accomplishing much more.
Moreover, author Justina Ireland also explores topics such as love, friendship, defying expectations, and finding a new path instead of following the one chosen for you. As a character, Jane is a strong and capable heroine who maneuvers through a gut-wrenching and a brilliantly constructed world. Furthermore, she is also clever, fun and somehow reckless at the same time. Nonetheless, what makes Jane stand out is her take charge attitude and her cleverness. Despite the fact that from time to time she makes impulsive decisions, she is still an active leader who clearly understands how to stand out in various sticky situations. Jane’s relationship with Katherine is undeniably the most developed relationship in the book, mainly because it was the most important relationship.
In the beginning, Jane dislikes Katherine, however, as time goes by she begins to appreciate her. Jane and Katherine eventually end up becoming the closest of friends. Readers will appreciate author Justina Ireland’s world building and her ability to create well-rounded characters. Dread Nation will take the readers on a rollercoaster ride from the first page all the way to the last.
