The Company series written by Kage Baker consists of 12 novels and 5 novellas in total, which were released between the years 1997 and 2012. An initial book of this series is entitled ‘The Graveyard Game’. It was published by Tor Books in 2005. At the start of the book, Mendoza is introduced as a Preserver. She works for the Dr Zeus Company and lives in the past for collecting species for future. In an incident, Mendoza kills 6 people from California in the year 1863. As a result, the Company does not take her back into the present world, which results in her disappearance. One of the senior Preservers in the Company, named Joseph, loved Mendoza like his own daughter as he did not have any. When he hears about Mendoza’s disappearance, he gets filled with rage. Joseph gets heavily drunk with chocolate and decides to find her, no matter how long it takes for him to get to her. As Joseph was an immortal and indestructible cyborg, he had unlimited patience in him. The mission that he starts for rescuing Mendoza, soon goes on to uncover a deep conspiracy that stretches over more than 50 centuries. Behind the conspiracy lie genocide and graveyards full of agents of the Company. Joseph also comes across an ominous Silence that spread all over in 2355. Joseph becomes successful in finding Mendoza. She too, joins him in unraveling the conspiracy by getting deep into its roots.

Another successful book of this series is called as ‘The LIfe of the World to Come’. The Tor publication released it in 2005. At the beginning of the book, Mendoza is once again shown as an immortal cyborg, who is sent to the past from the 24th century to bring back lost things. As a botanist, she has very good knowledge about plants. When she was sent to the 16th century UK, she met a native, who was tall, and dark, but who very handsome. This man dies tragically. Then in 19th century America, Mendoza meets an identical native man, who is also dark and tall like her previous lover. He too dies, but this time, Mendoza makes sure that she kills the men responsible for her lover’s death. She commits 6 murders. The Company does not like this step taken by Mendoza as it was not good for their business. And as they could not hurt her because she was indestructible and immortal, they make her disappear. In the present world, 3 geniuses meet at an Oxford University parlor and decide to become Inklings. They start working under the orders of Dr Zeus to develop historic stories. The three men create a dashing hero, who radiates sexuality and determination. On the other hand, Mendoza gets stranded 150,000 years back. She does not find any more natives to love. She longs for the love of the man whom she lost on two occasions. Mendoza begins to lose all hopes as her chances of returning back seem very less. Then suddenly, a renegade arrives from the future. He is also tall, dark, moderately handsome, and makes Mendoza go mad about him. With the arrival of this hero, Mendoza begins to see a new beginning and the possibility of a better future.
