Kallie George is an author of children’s novels that is best known for her whimsical stories about mythical creatures. When Kallie isn’t writing, she can be found peddling her editing services.
+Biography
Kallie George was born on the sunshine coast. That is also where she grew up. The author took to reading at a young age. She remembers being drawn to authors like E.B. White, C.S. Lewis and Roald Dahl.
Kallie loved fairy tales, which isn’t surprising because that is all her father read to her when she was a child. A point came when the author decided that it was no longer enough to merely read Fairy Tales.
She decided that she wanted to write them and, at five years of age, she proceeded to do just that. Kallie’s father was very indulgent of her hobbies. Not only did he help her write her stories but he also took steps to see her books published.
He encouraged her to explore her imagination and to put all the characters and plots bubbling up in her head to good use. It helped that their home was always filled with books and that inspiration was within arms reach whenever her creative juices dried up.
At one point, it became a Christmas tradition for Kallie George to write her stories and to then give them out as gifts to her family members. By the time she reached 12th grade, there was no question in anyone’s mind that Kallie would grow up to be an author.
Everyone in her family told her as much; though, Kallie resisted the encouragement at the start. She was more interested in acting at the time and it would be several years before she finally accepted her writing talents and proceeded to publish her first book.
Before that, she finished her studies, getting a degree in English and Art history. She augmented her resume with a Master’s Degree in Children’s Literature from the University of British Columbia.
Before the author became a writer, she was an editor who worked for ‘Simply Read Books’. When she finally wrote her first picture book, her employers were more than happy to publish it.
Even with the success she has received, the author never gave up on her editing work. Her writing career officially kicked off in 2010. That is when she decided to finally sit down to put the passion of her childhood to good use.
Her success in publishing made her schedule a little more complicated. But she still found time to do her work as an editor, not to mention teaching creative writing at workshops.
Editing is a very important part of Kallie George’s writing process. In fact, it is during the editing process that Kallie’s books finally take shape. Though, the author isn’t afraid to admit that she gets a lot of help from her friends and family upon whom she relies to give her objective opinions regarding her work.
Kallie’s books normally feature illustrations. She works hard to find artists that can best capture the spirit behind the words she writes. She has found great success with Abigail Halpin.
For the most part, Kallie writes books aimed towards very young readers. Every so often she will write a story for middle-grade kids or even older readers. Those projects tend to challenge her the most, which is why she keeps experimenting with them. But the author is at her best when she is writing for very young audiences.
Kallie’s books tell uplifting stories filled with relatable characters that are struggling to come to terms with their personal insecurities.
When Kallie isn’t writing or teaching, she can be found pursuing outdoor activities.
+Spark
Like all dragons, Spark can breathe fire. However, unlike most dragons, Spark cannot control his breath. This is a problem for the little dragon. He has tried practicing but it has done nothing to help him tame his power. Spark doesn’t know what to do next.
Spark is the first book in the Tiny Tales series. The short story it tells is definitely written with young readers in mind. The font used is large and bold, the purpose being to ensure that readers of all ages won’t encounter any problems reading the words.
The vocabulary is simple and easy to comprehend, perfect for any young audience members that might struggle with reading. This is on top of the small sizes of the paragraphs.
The story that Kallie George tells is accompanied by well-drawn illustrations that perfectly portray the characters and events playing out in the story. The lesson of the story is that there is a perfect time for everything.
Spark is a little dragon that has tried and failed to control his fiery breath. He has grown impatient and is just about ready to give up. His parents try to help him but he keeps burning everything to the ground.
Kallie wants him to realize that when the time is ripe, he will gain proper control of his flame. Her hope is for young readers struggling in a similar manner with activities like bike riding to know that they only have to be patient and a time will come when they finally master their craft.
