Karen Harper is a USA Today and New York Times bestselling American author of the historical fiction genre. She was born on April 6, 1945 in Toledo, Ohio, United States. In her writing career, Karen has written many successful novels and has received a lot of praise and appreciations for her dedicated efforts in developing the unique plots of her novels. Apart from writing in the historical fiction genre, Karen has also written some of her novels based on the contemporary fiction and British monarchy genres. One of the initial and successful novels written by her was published by the her in the year 1984, which was published again in the year 2006 by the Three Rivers Press as ‘The First princess of Wales’. The novel gives a description about the tale of the Joan of Kent and her about to become husband Edward, who was famous as the Black Prince. Karen had given a remark in an author’s note that the novel reminded her about the passionate love affair between the Prince of Wales, Charles, and Camilla Parker Bowles. She had also said that the plot of the novel showed the resemblance of their less than enthusiastic endorsement that the two shared from their senior royal figures.

Author Karen Harper believes that the Tudor era serves as the perfect setting for the plots of her novels, followed by the period of medieval England as the second best. The critics have praised Karen for her unique style of paying attention to the historically accurate details in her novels. She says that she has been able to do so because of the huge Tudor library that she has built over the past 30 years. She also credits the accuracy of the historical details in her novels to the frequent trips that she used to take to the British Isles and her access to the large library at The Ohio State University. Karen has even taken interviews of many prominent people who were familiar with her chosen topics of the historical events. Being born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, she earned her undergraduate degree from the Ohio University situated in Athens. Later, Karen went to complete her graduate degree from the Ohio State University located in Columbus. The Cold Creek series written by author Karen Harper consists of a total of three novels published in the year 2014. The first novel of the series was published by the Harlequin Mira publishing house under the title ‘Shattered Secrets’. It depicted a plot revolving around the lives of the main characters, Tess Lockwood and Gabe McCord. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, Tess Lockwood is shown as returning to the town of Cold Creek in Ohio, which was considered as a courageous act as she was abducted as a young girl and held captive. As her abduction had taken place at a very young age, she does not remember anything about the crime. Due to her abduction, her family was torn apart and her childhood was destroyed. Now, she has grown into a woman and seems to have a bright future, putting her dark past behind her. When Tess comes to inherit her family home in Cold Creek, she gets confronted by her past demons once again, that seem to haunt her and the town. Whatever had happened to Tess in her childhood, Gabe McCord blames himself for it. He was a teenager back then and was responsible for watching the group of children from which Tess was kidnapped. Now, he has risen to the rank of sheriff and hopes to contribute to the case in some way, especially because of his growing feelings towards Tess. But, Tess does not intend on digging up any detail about the case as she does not recall anything. But, when one more child goes missing from the town, she becomes certain that it is related to her returning back to Cold Creek. Therefore, she decides to team up with Gabe and together, they try to unlock the painful memories of their past in order to prevent the destruction of the childhood of another child.

The second novel of the series was also published in the year 2014 by the Harlequin Mira publishing house. It was titled ‘Forbidden Ground’ and depicted the plot revolving around the lives of the main characters, Tess and Kate Lockwood, and Grant Mason. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, the Lockwood sisters get reunited in the town of Cold Creek, Ohio after a traumatic childhood. The occasion is about the wedding of the youngest sister Tess Lockwood with the sheriff of the town Gabe McCord. Her elder sister Kate Lockwood is the maid of honor, who seems to be determined to get past the defenses of the best man Grant Mason. Kate is described by the author as an anthropologist and makes her living by studying the ancient dead bodies. She seems to be particularly interested in the Adena civilization of the prehistoric era which was once home to the area. She wants permission from the Mason family to excavate the burial mound that sits on the land of the Mason family. But, she is denied by Grant, who also warns her to stay away. He desires to honor the beliefs of his grandfather that the dead one should not be disturbed in their graves and Kate respects that desire. However, she keeps on getting intrigued to the site with her research work and believes that Grant is trying to hide something from her. Later, one of Grant’s friends gets killed and knowing that the sheriff is on honeymoon, Grant and Kate decide to help the deputy sheriff with the investigation. In the process, Kate gets attacked and feels certain that it i related to her research work on the burial mound. She cannot help but suspect Grant for his motives despite his seeming concern for her safety and their explosive attraction towards each other. Now, she is in a dilemma over trusting Grant or suspecting him for hiding some secrets.
