Broken Things to Mend
This is the first book in the Power of the Matchmaker series by Karey White. Each of the book in the series can be read as a standalone, but they all contain one recurring character named Pearl, the Matchmaker.
The first in the series introduces us to Silas and Celia. The two characters have an extremely difficult childhood that causes them a great deal of distrust and heartache. When Celia visits Silas’ hometown, he wouldn’t have given her a second thought if she had not been introduced to him by the Matchmaker, Pearl, who apparently is the same person who set things up and running for his parents.
However, some really nasty things have happened to Celia in her past that made her escape her life in Chicago to Sisters, Oregon. she is broke and alone trying to deal with her past, and at the same time, she is determined to survive it through. With the help of Pearl, Celia is able to find a roof over her head and also part-time work to get things going.
On the other hand, Silas is heavily burdened by loss. He’s a stutter, and he, too, has reasons to be cautious. But unlike Celia, Silas has had a good head start as his aunt Nancy provides him a roof over his head and encourages him to connect with Celia. But regardless of how dependable and kind Silas appears to be, there are some things in Celia’s past that they can’t escape, and this time the damage could be too much to mend.
Karey White has done a fantastic job in creating the main characters in this story. Celia is a beautifully woven character that the writer gives faith, hope, and strength. She’s an orphan who moved from one foster home to the next and has no sense of self-worth and zero self-confidence. she is a true believer that everything that has happened to her was meant to happen and doesn’t believe that she deserves better.
Despite the situation that lands her in the small town of Sisters in Oregon, she works hard, gets her head up, and lets no one doubt her sincerity. All in all, she has kept a big secret that consumes her daily and, even worse, gives her nightmares. She’s broken when she arrives in the small town, but somehow the kindness of the strangers she meets in this town mends her in a truly beautiful journey of self-restoration.
On the other hand, is Silas. He is an amazing character, and like Celia, he is an orphan. Unlike Celia, he has got an aunt who took him in as her son. The accident that led to the death of his parents left him broken and shaken even though his journey of restoration is better stages than that of Celia. However, Silas believes that all people that he ever loved always leave, and there is no reason for him to find someone special.
The beauty of this story heavily relies on how the author conveys the feeling of the hero and the heroine in their growth and relationship through their respective point of view. As a reader, you’ll find yourself connecting with them, laughing with them, crying with them, and be scared for them, and that is a feat only a few authors achieve, and Karey White does it effortlessly.
Both Silas and Celia are strong and realistic as they work through serious issues in their life. There’s a strong romantic attraction soon after they meet, but then other things get in their way, and that makes neither of them fully trust each other. But it’s not until the truth is finally revealed that they finally have a chance to be together.
As a reader, you will also deeply connect with other supporting casts in the story. One of them is Aunt Nancy, who’s supportive, kind, and very protective of her nephew, even though her actions at a time cause the romance to spiral.
The Husband Maker
For years, Charlotte has been spending her time as a husband maker, making every guy she dates a potential husband for the next girl he dates. But things have now changed, and she is focused on utilizing her husband-making skills on herself and has her eyes set on one man.
Angus has always loved Charlotte right from childhood. However, he is tired of waiting for her to realize his love for her and how good they could be together. She has broken his heart too many times, and it’s time to move on with his life; and chooses to move halfway across the country to help him move on. However, Charlotte won’t let him leave without a fight, and Angus has to make a decision about whether he’s willing to let her back into his life.
Karey White has created a beautiful romantic story that’s just too good to pass up. The heroine is a completely flawed character, and she is a true reflection of what we all see in ourselves-as flawed beings. But what makes charlotte a character to root for is the fact that she always sees the sunny side of things despite the circumstances she finds herself in. She always finds the silver lining, and even when her heart is broken, she finds goodness and happiness.
Overall, The Husband Maker is a fun, sweet, heartfelt story and bittersweet romance that takes the reader on a rollercoaster ride as Charlotte tries to find the one for her. If you enjoy reading romantic novels, then Karey White books are a must-read for you.
