The American author Karin Salvalaggio has been writing for a number of years now, gaining a worldwide audience in the process. With a series behind her, she has definitely become a key figure to watch within the industry, having turned the heads of both readers and critics alike. Knowing her genre well and how to make it work in a modern context, she has become a master of the modern thriller in a relatively short amount of time.

Early and Personal Life

Growing up in West Virginia in America after being born during the sixties, Karin Salvalaggio harnessed a keen passion for reading and writing from an early age. A voracious reader, she would be constantly honing and refining her craft throughout the years, styling her voice as a writer. This, along with the experiences she used as inspiration growing up, helped her to become the writer that she currently is today.

Attending the University of California Santa Cruz, she later graduated in 1989 before going on to the University of London. It was here that she gained an MA in Creative Writing from Birbeck, something which she then took on with her. Using her skills learned here, she gained a better understanding of the tools of her trade, allowing her to ultimately develop as a writer.

Living for two years in Italy, as well as living in London, she has gained an enormous wealth of experience over the years. This has been enormously beneficial to her and her writing, as it’s allowed her to expand upon her experiences and ideas. Creating more engaging characters and situations, she definitely has a worldly eye when building and structuring her narratives.

Now writing full-time, though, she has really well and truly come into her own as an author of modern thrillers. With a clear understanding of the art-form, she has become a master of her craft, something which she’ll continue to develop as time goes on. There’s plenty more titles set to be released on the near horizon as well, something which will continue as her career grows from strength-to-strength.

Writing Career

Starting out with a short-story published back in 2011, the author to be Karin Salvalaggio made her way on the scene with ‘Walleye Junction’. Published in the ‘Mechanics Institute Review 8’ she made a considerable impact with her initial thriller story. After this she released her debut novel which was titled ‘Bone Dust White’, which she brought out in 2014 and was also a thriller.

Largely focusing on her primary series, she has been concentrating on her ‘Macy Greeley Mystery’ series of novels. With four titles in the series so far, this is her best, and only, known franchise to date, as it’s becoming highly popular. Following the case files and investigations of the eponymous detective, they chart her progress in what is a very unique take on the thriller genre.

A highly-regarded author as well, she is not without a number of awards and accolades for her various contributions too. Gaining critical as well as commercial success over the course of her relatively short career so far, she has received plenty of favorable reviews for her work. Setting the template for a new kind of thriller, she has managed to carve her own niche in the genre, something which many others are starting to recognize.

With her work reaching a worldwide audience on an international as well as a national scale, she has achieved a global level of success. The ideas and themes within her stories are accessible to readers on a universal scale, as her characters are easy to relate to. Knowing the tools of her trade well, she is an adept writer of the genre, understanding perfectly what it is that she’s offering.

Currently still writing to this very day, there’s a lot more to come from Karin Salvalaggio as an author. Her leading character of Macy Greeley for one is a franchise that shall definitely continue for some time yet. With a lot more planned on the horizon, it appears that she’s not stopping anytime soon, as her writing career carries on into the foreseeable future.

Walleye Junction

Initially published through Minotaur Books in 2016 on the 10th of May, this was set to mark the third book in the ongoing Macy Greeley Mystery series. Continuing on from the previous novels, it provides another case file for the eponymous detective to solve. Giving it’s long term readers more of what they’ve now come to expect, it provides a sense of excitement, whilst also providing something for newcomers as well.

Set in Walleye Junction in Montana, Macy Greeley heads up there after leaving her son in the care of her mother to solve a murder. Following his kidnap and murder, the ever controversial Philip Long who hosted a talk radio show is the subject of a new investigation. It then seems an open-and-shut case after his supposed kidnappers, a couple of far-right extremists who he spoke about on-air, are found to have overdosed. Was their death really an accident, though? Can Macy find the real culprits? What really happened up at Walleye Junction?

Silent Rain

First published in 2017 on the 9th of May, this was initially released through the Minotaur Books publishing label once again. Making up the fourth title in the Macy Greeley Mystery series this time, this also carries on from the last title. With more from the eponymous protagonist, it also manages to capture the essence of the previous novels both in terms of atmosphere and in ambiance.

Following the traumatic events of Grace Adam’s life, it sees her attempting to move on from the past and focus on the present. This is more difficult than she’d anticipated, though, as there’s those that will still seek her out and try to rehash the past. The novelist Peter Granger is someone that she felt she trusted with the more intimate moments of her past, but he betrays her for his status as a best-selling writer, following which his home is burnt down. Can Macy uncover the truth? Who else did Peter betray and who would want to see him and his wife come to harm? What happens in the silent rain?

   I have really enjoyed reading your books! I sincerely hope #5 is on the horizon.
   I try to read authors debut books and decide if to continue with them. It surprises me what talent is out there.
   I really enjoy Det. Macy Greeley, the way she balances her family and work.
   She has a special way of handling victims as well as suspects!
