Kasie West is an American novelist that writes Young Adult, Paranormal and contemporary romance literature. She grew up in California and attended Fresno State University graduating with a Bachelor that is totally unrelated to writing. She is best known for the Pivot Point series of novels of which “Pivot Point” first published in 2013 was her debut title. She has also written several standalone novels in the contemporary romance genre and paranormal genre that have just been as successful as her YA novels. While she has recently been concentrating more on contemporary romance she does not prefer any genre though contemporary comes easier for her given that she does not have to come up with new worlds or rules. Growing up she never knew that she was made to become a writer until very late in her college years. Nonetheless, she had always been excellent at writing, and would top most of her essay writing courses She was also a voracious reader right from childhood. Kasie is a mother of four, the eldest of which is older than the youngest by about seventeen years. She currently lives with her family in California, and loves to spend most of her time wake boarding though she asserts that her skill level is not as high as her passion for the sport. She also loves to watch a lot of chick flicks and series such as the Vampire Diaries with family and friends, and draws a lot of inspiration for her contemporary YA from the movies.

As a teen, she loved reading a lot, particularly anything written by Sarah Dessen. With very little YA to read during her years growing up, some of her favorite novels to read included the likes of Judy Blume and the Babysitters Club series of novels, both of which are not your typical hard-boiled YA. She would also read a lot of fantasy during her high school years, which probably informed her dabbling in paranormal fantasy series early in her writing career. She first got interested in YA fiction after reading “Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants” series by Ann Brashares. What drew her to the genre was her love for reading in general and her interest in the excitement of first love, insecurities, and discovery of love prevalent in the genre. She wrote her very first short stories while still in high school since she thought there were not enough young adult novels that she would have loved to read. However, like many of her friends, she would be sidetracked by the vagaries of adolescent life that led her to other interests that stifled her budding writing career. As such, even though she had one of the best creative writing teachers, she focused more on drama, which is what most of her friends were interested in. It was not until several years later into adulthood that she revived her interest in writing. Several horrific novels later, she would get her first novel “Pivot Point” published in 2006, and has never looked back since.

The idea for the “Pivot Point” series of novels was derived from the movie “Sliding Doors” that Kasei had watched a year before she started working on the book. The series of novels is premised on the lead characters ability to see the future among several other paranormal abilities. The lead character in the series is Addie a high school student dealing with the usual travails of teenage life and enjoying several paranormal powers. Addie is a perfectionist who loves her decision-making and relationships with other people to be perfect, just like any teenager is deluded to believe. As such, the lead pushes the themes of what a normal teenage girl goes through in trying to make sense of their world and what is expected of them as a young adult. The series is about letting go and trusting that things will finally work for good just like they should. One of the most intriguing of the supporting cast in the series is the outgoing, popular, charming, and outgoing Duke who has the power of telekinesis. Duke always makes Addie happy as she never has to over think or over analyze when she is with him. Trevor also puts Addie at ease though he is the complete opposite of Duke in being thoughtful, sweet, reserved, laid back, and quiet, which makes him so easy to talk to.

In “Pivot Point” Addie is introduced as a Searcher who can see the future, which means she can plan against disaster by taking measures to avoid negative outcomes. She believes she has the ultimate insurance plan until she gets the devastating news that her parents are getting divorced. To make matters even worse, she now has to choose which parent to live with. Her father is leaving the paranormal life to go live with normal people, while her mother is staying behind to live a life Addie has always known. Being a searcher should make the decision easy, but six weeks of looking into the future says it is not so easy. In one of her futures, she meets Trevor a sensitive, understanding, and cute artist in the normal high school she joins after opting to live with her father. In her alternate future, she is the object of interest of the quarterback that also happens to be the hottest guy in her school. Both paths portend loss and love, and ultimately it comes down to who can she live with and what reality she can bear living through.

In “Split Second” the sequel to Pivot Point, Addie has had some of the worst period in her life after her parents’ divorce. To make matter worse, her best friend betrayed her, and it turns out that her boyfriend was just using her. The path that she chose seems to have been the worst of the two, and she is forced to slow down time just so that she can bear the misfortunes dogging her life. Her father invites her to go visit him in the normal world of Dallas, and she jumps at the chance to get away from her current predicament. She meets the achingly familiar and handsome Trevor, who despite his allure seems to have some dark secrets that her search has yet to reveal. In the meantime, Addie’s best friend Laila asserts that she can help her get back some of her memories and increase the potency of her powers. But there are powerful people that would do anything to ensure Addie does not piece back a past she had forgotten, and create a future that may change everything they hold dear.
