Kassandra Lamb is an American author of romantic suspense and cozy mystery books. She is the author of popular book series, including Kate Huntington Mystery, Kate on Vacation Mystery, Marcia Banks and Buddy Mystery, and C.o.P. on the Scene Mystery. She also wrote a nonfiction book, “Someday Is Here,” published in 2016. Kassandra was born in Baltimore and has lived in Maryland for over five decades. Like her literary character, Kate Huntington, Kassandra worked as a specialist in trauma recovery for 20 years and as a psychology lecturer at Townson University.
During her youth, Kassandra has two main passions- psychology and writing. She was advised that writers need days job, so she studied psychology. Through her career as a psychotherapist and working as a college professor, she discovered the darker side of human nature. She learned more about strength, persistence, and the healing power of human laughter. Now as a retired psychotherapist, Kassandra spends most of her time in an alternate realm full of fictional characters. The portal to this imaginative world is through her computer located in her home in North Central Florida, where she lives with her husband and their pet dog.
Kassandra’s first series is set in Maryland, featuring psychotherapist and newbie investigator Kate Huntington.
Lethal Assumptions is the first book in A C.o.P. on the scene mystery series featuring Judith Anderson. Her confidence and no-nonsense attitude have seen her climb the ladder to lieutenant in the Baltimore County Police Department. However, her confidence is soon shaken when she discovers that she’s one step behind a killer she’s been trailing for days, barely a week into a new job as the Chief of Police in a small local town in Florida city.
The serial killer’s first victim is a college girl, which could be a case of the wrong place at the wrong time. But as time passes, more bodies keep coming up, and the killings may be connected to other cases in neighboring Jacksonville. While Judith was already aware that the chief of police job would come with its share of challenges, she’s finding it almost impossible to establish her authority without dividing and taking on hands-on without micromanaging. Plus, there is sufficient evidence of a mole in her department.
Who can Judith trust? It may be her last if she makes a simple wrong decision or assumption. In a race against time to save more lives, she must rely on every instinct and tale that once made her a popular star in Baltimore. But will that help end the serial killer’s murder spree? If you are a fan of the Joanna Brady series by J. A Jance and Eve Dallas series, you will fall in love with Judith’s operations as the chief of police. This debut novel is an excellent start to a series featuring well-crafted characters, a well-woven mystery, and suspense. The story has high and low emotional tones, with plenty of real characters with strengths, weaknesses, humor, and empathy.
In the second novel in A C.o.P on the Scene mystery, Judith is still troubled by the criminals that won’t give her sufficient time to adjust to Florida or finish unpacking. Barely two months on her new job, and she’s not yet recovered from the serial killer case when she receives a call to go and investigate what initially seems to be a suicide. There’s an abandoned car on a bridge, and a search party in the river below discovers the body of a young woman. Was the young woman murdered, and the crime scene set up in a manner that resembles suicide? Why is there no ID on her or in the car if she killed herself? And who cleaned the fingerprints on the car’s exterior?
With the assistance of the local sheriff Sam from the nearby Clover County, Judith begins a desperate search for answers that sees her unravel a conspiracy of human trafficking rights operating in the underbelly of her city. Her realization that she might face more than one ruthless adversary, perhaps someone within her department, makes it challenging to crack this case and bring those responsible to justice. Can Judith weed out the corrupt cops within her department and find the killer? Will she be able to end human trafficking before more people end up dead?
The second in the series features a wide cast of characters and the kind of people you’d want to have your back if you find yourself in a bad situation. Judith is overwhelmed with things she has to deal with, including solving trafficking cases, stopping serial killers, and weeding out bad cops in her force- all these keep her busy but not enough such that she finds herself falling in love with the neighboring police officer she’s collaborating with in the investigation. It’s an epic story that will keep you hooked from the first page to the last.
To Kill a Labrador is the first book in Marcia Banks and Buddy Mysteries by Kassandra Lamb. We meet Marcia, who likes to view herself as normal even though life’s work is abnormal. She is responsible for training service dogs for war veterans suffering from PTSD. But then, the ex-veteran owner of her first trainee dog is arrested under the suspicion of killing his wife, and soon Marcia finds herself entangled in a more intricate vocation- as an amateur sleuth.
She is assigned to dog-sit the Labrador service dog (Buddy) and is angry that his veteran owner is accused of murder. With the help of Buddy, Marcia tries to figure out the real killer even after the handsome local sheriff warns her against snooping around. She pokes around until the killer finally pokes back.
To Kill a Labrador is a fast-paced, action-packed story filled with twists and turns you won’t see coming. The characters are colorful and vividly crafted. Kassandra’s Lamb writing style is vivid, clearly describing the murder, mystery, and mayhem. The author has also included a training service feature, which is a bonus. The main character is likable, loves her job, and gives all her full determination and dedication. There is so much going on from the first page to the end, and the motives only halfway come to light.
