Writing romance novels for some time now, American author Kat Martin, who also goes under the pen names of Kathy Lawrence and Kasey Marx, has been enjoying success thanks to her ever populist appeal. Having written a wide-range of novels spanning across her long and illustrious career, she continues to pave the way within her field. Published worldwide, this success shows no signs of stopping anytime soon either.
Early and Personal Life
Kat Martin, also known by her full name as Kathleen Kelly Martin, has always enjoyed writing as she’s always held a passion for the written word for as long as she can remember. Born on the 14th of July, 1947, she was brought up in the Central Valley of California the place of her birth. It was her that she was to gain many of the experiences and inspiration that were to inform much of her adult writing careet that was to follow.
Studying in Santa Barbara at the University of California, she graduated with a degree in history and anthropology, a qualification that would later help determine much of her source material. With a strong interest in history and the past, this was to help provide the basis of much of her work throughout her career. Currently living Missoula, Montana, she now lives with the photographer and writer Larry Jay Martin. Himself an author of over twenty books, mostly concerning mysteries and westerns, they bonded over a mutual love of literature. Originally a real estate broker, Kat turned to writing in 1985 as she took it up full time and has never looked back since as she’s gone on to be one of the most celebrated writers within her field.
Writing Career
Getting her first book published in 1988 with the title ‘Magnificent Passage’ Kat Martin was to go on to enjoy a full and fruitful writing career. Giving up her job as a real estate broker in 1985, she quickly turned to what she loved; writing, and this has continued right up until today. Most of her novels are said to come from snippets she has seen, read or heard, as the small seed of an idea quickly grows into a fully fledged novel. Starting out by writing primarily historical romance, she soon developed her work as she began to progress more into the suspense and mystery area of the romance genre. With strong themes running throughout, she continually comes back to a set of core topics and genres that she holds dear.
Having written over twelve individual novels and counting, Kat has also created a collection of much beloved series that have found a worldwide audience. Starting out with her ‘Southern’ series and her ‘Garrick Family’ line of novels, she’s managed to build a very reputable brand of fiction that’s unique to her. Currently writing ‘The Raines of Wind Canyon’, she’s still producing to this very day, with more novels in the series to come. She’s been published both nationally and internationally, to much acclaim both critically and commercially. No stranger to awards either, she’s managed to accrue a number of these over the years, such as the Reviewers Choice between 1989 and 1990 for her novel ‘Captain’s Bride’. This is a trend that doesn’t look set to diminish anytime soon, as her career looks set to go from strength-to-strength for some time yet.
Magnificent Passage
Initially published on the 1st of September, 1988, this was to be the book that was to introduce Kat Martin to the world and large. Creating somewhat of a stir at the time, it was to win her fans as well as setting the overall tone for her books. Not only that, but it also helped to establish her style too.
In this first book of hers, Kat introduces the character of Mandy who is hoping to escape her somewhat tumultuous existence within the confines of Fort Laramie, as she looks to break away and explore the world beyond. Soon to flee her overbearing and stifling existence, she escapes by using the identity of Julia, her cousin. As she pretends to be Julia, she then breaks away as she flees to the capital of California with all its glittering lights and excitement. Here her uncle is the governor and she hopes to make a new life for herself, one fraught with the thrill of adventure and suspense. Soon though, this turns to romance, as she sets her eyes upon her guide, a handsome and mysterious gentleman who happens to sweep her off her feet giving her the newfound zest for life that she was looking for. Will she find what she’s looking for in this bright new exciting life of hers? Could he really be the one for her with his thrilling and exciting ways offering her all that she could ever hope for? What will come next as Mandy decides to embark on her magnificent passage?
Against the Wind
Originally published on the 28th of December, 2010, this was to set-up what was to be Kat Martin’s latest line of books with her ‘Raines of Wind Canyon’ series. Creating the overall tone that was to follow, this helped to establish the series as a whole. It also allowed Martin to create her chief protagonists as well.
Known to many as ‘the no-account Raines boys’, they’re well-regarded and respected for their ability to overcome hardships and tough streetwise style. With both honor and respect, they’ve built themselves up to be successful and ever-resourceful individuals. They seem to be missing only one thing, which they’ve left at the wayside for all these years and that something is love. Enter Sarah Allen, the girl who first humiliated Jackson Raines all the way back in the high-school as she returns to Wind Canyon having been widowed. Finding herself on his ranch, he quickly finds that he doesn’t want to get rid of her. As trouble then starts to arise from her past as strangers arrive in relation to her ex-husband, she soon discovers their migh be problems for her and her daughter Holly. Will she be able to overcome these issues and live the peaceful life once more? What are the issues and can she keep her daughter safe? Can Jackson Raine learn to love as he goes against the wind?

Hello Kat,
Just a question. You’ve written several novellas that are only available one readers. My question is can you not have them released in print form. I find it very difficult to read a story on my iPad. The light is very hard on the eyes when reading for some time.
I have all the stories that have been released in printed form and treasure your writing,
Sincerely,
Jeannette
I had the same problem.
Solution: Libby app permits you to select a solid black background with white colored font. This reduces the glare & is easy on your eyes
Hope that helps
