Kate Spencer
Kate Spencer grew up in Wellesley, Massachusetts. She got her degree in women’s studies from Bates College.

She writes a bi-monthly column for InStyle and her work’s been published by Rolling Stone, BuzzFeed, the Washington Post, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, and numerous other places. She has previously worked as a senior editor and producer at VH1.

As a freelance writer, she covers topics like grief, beauty, pop culture, parenting, celebrity, politics, and grief through an intersectional lens.

She is also the co-host of Forever35, which is an award winning podcast. She started the show after she suggested to Shafrir that they adapt their conversations about skincare into a podcast of some kind. It was named Best Beauty & Fashion Podcast at the 2020 iHeartRadio Podcast Awards.

“The Dead Moms Club: A Memoir about Death, Grief, and Surviving the Mother of All Losses” is a non-fiction book that was released in 2017. Kate Spencer was 27 years old when her mom died. In “The Dead Moms Club”, she walks readers through her experience of stumbling through her own loss and grief, and helps them get through it, as well. This is not some sentimental and weepy tale, however a frank and up-front look at what it really means to go through gruesome grief and come out on the other side.

This book, an empathetic read, covers how losing her mom changed almost everything in her life: both women and men readers that have lost parents or experienced grief of such a magnitude are going to be consoled and comforted. Spencer even concludes every chapter with a cheeky yet useful tip for readers (like the “It’s None of Your Business Card” to copy and hand out to the nosy strangers that ask about your passed loved one).

Some readers found Kate Spencer to be the BFF they wish they had when their mom died. They had some dear friends, but those friends were not rocked by grief and could make them laugh until they cried about it. The most tragic of things are also the ones that we most need to laugh about. So thankfully Kate’s here to lead us to those laughs with such charm and grace.

It’s the perfect ‘how to’ guide for the unimaginable, and Kate’s the dearest of friends you could want beside you the entire way. The book is sure to destroy you, but in a good way. In the deeply relatable way sure to make you remember your own mom, and makes you even wish you had met Kate’s mom.

“In A New York Minute” is the first stand alone novel and was released in 2022. Their love story has just gone viral, however it has yet to even begin.

Franny Doyle is having the absolute worst day. She has been sacked, the subway doors ripped her favorite dress to ruins, and she has now flashed her unmentionables to half of lower Manhattan. On the plus side, this dashing stranger came to her rescue with his (Gucci!) suit jacket. But on the down side, he cannot get away from her fast enough.

Making things worse? Somebody has posted their (totally not) meet-cute online. All of a sudden Franny and Hayes Montgomery, her rescuer, are the newest social media sensation, and all of New York is shipping #SubwayQTs.

Hayes and Franny could not be a more disastrous match. She is creative and talkative. While he is shy, serious, and all about numbers. But somehow, they continue to run into one another. It appears that fate is not finished with these subway sweethearts quite yet.

Kate spins this catastrophic meet cute into a richly realized romance which is surrounded by even more love stories, between families, between friends, and between New Yorkers and their city. This is a love story to friendship, discovering what (and who) makes you feel truly yourself, and New York City. Kate delivers a playful and frolicky rom-com about finding Mr. Right when everything else is going wrong.

Kate writes with a wry lilt and she has such a gift for writing dialogue. This is a sparkling delight about chosen and found family, being brave even during the tiny moments, and the rewards that we can reap when we put our authentic selves out there. The novel has adorable banter and countless laugh out loud moments to make for a charming romance. This novel features the perfect meet cute.

“One Last Summer” is the second stand alone novel and was released in 2024. A laugh out loud and dreamy summer romance asking: What do you do when the life you have planned out is not what you have dreamed?

Clara Millen’s life is spiraling out of control: her dream job is a nightmare, she is resoundingly single, and it has been years since she has been able to take time off. Thankfully, the last problem she is able to fix, since this year she will be joining her friends on their annual summer vacation to their beloved childhood sleepover camp for some much needed escape.

However once Clara arrives at Pine Lake Camp, she faces one more unwelcome change: the owners are retiring and are going to sell the property. The news turns her whole plans for revelry into a night of reminiscing, and prompts a surprise heart-to-heart between Mack and Clara. Mack is her old camp nemesis and constant competitor, who is still just as annoying, not to mention as annoyingly handsome as ever.

Soon the campfires are not all that is throwing off sparks. And once a wildly passionate night becomes two, then too many to count, Clara starts wondering if she and Mack could possibly have a future together. However once Clara’s boss finally offers her everything that she has worked so hard for, Clara is going to need to figure out if the life she has always wanted is the life that makes her feel truly alive.

This novel delivers some steamy tension, summer camp magic, and a plot sure to keep you turning the pages way past your bedtime. Readers found this to be a hilarious and sweet treat.
