Throughout the course of the series, Brill Jessup encounters numerous suspenseful events and tries to solve the mysteries around the city through her tireless investigation. One of the initial novels of the suspense series is titled as ‘The Last Word’. It was published by David C. Cook in 2009. However, she seems glad that Vanessa did not choose to go for abortion as suggested by her boyfriend. The fact that she strayed from the way she brought her up makes Brill hurt. Her plate seems to be filled with other problems in her professional life as well. She comes to know that one of the detectives in her team has been murdered and the killer has threatened that he is coming after her next. And when another detective gets injured by the same attacker in an attempt to kill Brill, public criticism begins to mount on her. But, she manages to remain alive and finally catches the murderer. During the summer break of college, Ethan comes home and seems eager to regain the trust of Vanessa Jessup and become a friend of her infant so named Carter. Seeing that he is a thoughtful, hardworking, ambitious, and kind-hearted, Vanessa’s parents, Brill and Kurt Jessup, approve of him for Vanessa. But, before Ethan could get himself settled in life, some random shootings leave one of his dear ones dead. This leaves Ethan disheartened. Later, when the police start scrambling for the suspects, he comes across shocking details which prove helpful in solving the case. But, Ethan looks worried about the fact if he gives the information to the police, it would endanger the lives of Vanessa, Carter, and Brill Jessup. And keeping it to himself also does not seem to be a good option. Not knowing what to do next, Ethan Langley begins to feel that he has landed himself in a risky game whose rules he is not aware of. As the safety of his loved ones depends on his call, he is required to make the right choice and ensure everyone’s safety.

I just finished two of Kathy Herman’s books, Ever Present Danger and Don’t Look Back. Both are excellent books full of twists and turns and surprises. Some of her characters have issues with moral and Christian principles but find guidance and support from family and friends who love them and show them the way. I’ll be reading more of her books.
