A British author, the writer Katy Birchall has been making a strong impact in the industry, emerging as an award winning talent to keep an eye on. Working as a journalist on a number of high-ranking publications, she’s an extremely gifted and versatile writer. Creating her own theater production, which she also managed and directed, she has won awards for her efforts, marking her out as a major upcoming talent.

Early and Personal Life

Growing up in Surrey in the United Kingdom, Katy Birchall always had a clear eagerness for the written word. Showing a passion for English and literature, she also had a love of the stage, as she focused on the theater as well. With both of these combined she would set herself on becoming a fully fledged author and playwright, something which she achieved at a relatively young age.

Attending the Woldingham school located in Surrey as well, she would continue to learn about the theater over time. She then went on to attend and graduate from Manchester University, whereby she gained a first class degree in Linguistics and English Literature. This allowed her to refine and hone her craft as an author, creating the style and tone that she was going to be using in the following years to come.

Writing for a number of different highly prestigious publications such as The Telegraph, she also got a job working for the Country Life magazine as editor. All the while she was continuing with her own writing career, building upon her profile as an author, and laying the foundations of her career. Along with this she was also continuing to work in the theater as well, something which allowed her to create more in-depth and well defined characters.

Still writing to this day, she’s currently winning awards for her work, thus ensuring that she’s definitely one to watch. Providing wit and warmth through her work, she has been able to set herself apart from the rest with her idiosyncratic style. This is something that is expected to continue in the following years to come as she shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.

Writing Career

Releasing her first novel in 2015, Katy Birchall made her debut onto the literary scene with ‘The It Girl’; a fictional novel for teens. Setting her up for a productive and successful career as a fully fledged writer, she was well on her way towards building a worldwide audience. Establishing her tone and style as well, it really worked at creating a sense of what she was really about as an author.

With her series ‘The It Girl’ focusing on the character of Anna Huntley, it sets itself on a young adult template focused on the teenager demographic. Knowing its audience well, it manages to capture all the highs and lows of high-school, as she tries to navigate the difficult and harsh environment there. There’s also her theater productions as well, all of which have also included her trademark wit and warmth as an author.

Winning awards before she even became a full-time novelist, she received the 24/7 Theater Festival Award for Most Promising New Writer in 2011. This was given for a comedy play she wrote and directed herself, as well as producing, something which she did in her time while studying at Manchester. Not only that, but she has also starred in a number of drama productions herself whilst at university, adding acting to her roster of talents too.

Now reaching a worldwide audience, her work has risen to success on an unprecedented scale, with more and more discovering her work every day. Working at publications like The Telegraph in the past as well, she has achieved an even greater level of success, along with her work at the ‘Country Life’ magazine. Maintaining a presence in the industry at all levels, she has come to be one of the most prolific authors currently out there.

Living in Brixton in London with her flatmate and three Labradors, she continues to write to this very day. Continuing as an advocate for comedy too, she has been an active member of this specific area of the literary community for some time now as well. With a lot more planned on the horizon for her as an author, it seems that her writing career is growing from strength-to-strength, something that will carry on into the foreseeable future.

Team Awkward

Originally published through the Egmont publishing label, this was initially released on the 7th of January in 2016. Marking the second part of ‘The It Girl’ series of books, this one carries on directly from the last, continuing in much the same vein as before. That’s not to say there aren’t any twists and turns along the way, as Birchall also has some surprises in there as well.

Following the events of the previous novel Anna Huntley is now in the limelight after her father married a famous actress. This means that she really needs to find something that she excels at, even if she is a ‘dork’ by her own admission. On top of that her major crush at school, Connor, is getting on with the new girl, as they share their love of art. Will this sports day be just what’s needed to grab his attention? Can she find a way to grab Connor’s attention? How will she fare on team awkward?

Don’t Tell the Bridesmaid

Initially released on the 12th of January in 2017, this was to be the third part in the ongoing ‘It Girl’ trilogy of novels. Brought out through the Egmont publishing label once again, this really managed to capture the essence of the first two, giving the readers more of what they were looking for. It also works at further developing the character of Anna Huntley as a leading protagonist, along with that of the narrative.

With the wedding preparations between her father and his actress girlfriend now fully underway, Anna has to ensure she doesn’t do anything to embarrass herself. That’s when the school is set to head off to Rome on a trip, a trip she will be taking with her new boyfriend Connor. Set to visit the Trevi Fountain and all manner of famous romantic locations, all she needs to do is again make sure nothing goes wrong. Will she be able to have an accident free romantic time? How will the wedding pan out? What will happen when they don’t tell the bridesmaid?
