Kenya Wright is the multi-bestselling writer of more than forty works of romance and fantasy fiction. She has also been known to be an author that works hard to improve the inclusion of diverse characters in her novels.
Wright is also an author of mystery fiction works that explores societal issues in the millennial technological age. Wright’s novels have been popular all across the world and have been published in audio, eBook, and print.
Before she became an author she was a foreign linguist that transcribed and translated Persian Farsi for the United States administration.
After more than half a dozen years in the military, she got into academics and graduated from the New College of Florida with a Social Psychology bachelor’s degree.
She would then attend the Univerity of Miami, which is where she discovered that she loved persuasive writing. Ultimately, she enrolled at Seton Hill University where she graduated with an MFA in creative writing.
When she is not writing her novels, she can usually be found homeschooling her children. The family lives a very nomadic lifestyle and they usually travel to different countries and states as they connect with people and explore the world.
Wright began writing when she was very little but it was her love for music that made her fall in love with storytelling. With a pad and pen, she felt like she could let out all of her emotions, which was very powerful.
When she was in high school and late middle school, she began dabbling in storytelling which only made her love for words grow even further.
Too shy to share her work she kept it to herself until her teacher got her hands on the wrong composition book. Believing she was just about to grade an assignment, what she had stumbled upon was a love story set in the hood.
Thereafter, the teacher encouraged Kenya to consider a career in journalism/writing given that she knew that she was actively working on the school paper.
She did not believe anyone would take her seriously, besides she had plans of becoming a famous songwriter who would write music for the best artists out there.
However, it does seem that God had other plans for Wright and immediately after getting out of high school she became a mother. She decided to become a stay-at-home mother and raise her son, even as she shunted her dreams aside.
Fast forward several years, Kenya Wright got several more kids and her dream seemed to have died on the vine. But life took a turn as she found herself with a lot of time and began reading which made her fall in love with words all over again.
The more she read, the more she started writing, and before long she had a full manuscript written. But once again doubt reared its ugly head and she started doubting if she could become an author.
She thought of herself as having too many responsibilities and being too old and thought she was being foolish trying to make such a monumental thing happen.
But there was a little voice in her head that would not let her rest that said she needed to believe in herself and that she could do it.
Wright then started looking for a publisher and in 2017 she got signed to “S.Yvonne Presents.” “I’ll Always be Loving You” her debut novel was only the first of many bestselling titles.
Dirty Kisses is the first book in the Lion and the Mouse series and it focuses on two characters: Kazamir and Emily. Kazamir is a Russian mob enforcer of sorts who is well known for how dangerous he is while Emily catches his attention and quickly becomes his money washer. One thing that Wright excelled at with this book was her ability to create chemistry and mutual respect between Kazamir and Emily. Their attraction was quick, but Wright created the perfect situations in which readers felt as though Kazamir and Emily knew each other for an extended period of time. It was most fascinating watching Kazamir grow in his respect of Emily. They were put in a specific situation where Emily was able to exhibit her strong skills which let Kazamir know that she was a force to be reckoned with. This only intensified their attraction. Every steamy scene between the two of them was extremely hot both physically and verbally. The book was also fast paced and easy to get through, but the characterization was probably my favorite aspect of the novel. There were even found family elements which, for me, was an interesting element to discover in a mafia based romance. Emily was a strong, confident Black woman that basically handled her business as she saw fit.
“Dirty Kisses” by Kenya Wright opens with the head of the Bratva Kazimir in New York investigating the killing of the top washer of the Russian mafia in the city.
Rumi had been nicknamed “The Russian Lion” as he had more than 200 kills to his name. Aged only twenty, the FBI had him just below the most wanted list with the likes of Usama Bin Laden.
Killing his washer sparks off a deadly and dark war and unfortunately, Emily finds herself on the man’s radar. Emily’s brother is one of the suspects in the murder and to save him, she may have to agree to launder Kazimir’s money.
Called a hustler by many of her acquaintances and a con by others, there is no better washer in Harlem who can keep gangsters on their toes.
Initially, Emily and Kazimir have a tricky arrangement based on danger and fear. Working for the man is like walking a tightrope given that he is a gorgeous man that can be a monster too.
Still, he comes with an air of sensuality that most of the time she forgets how terrifying he is. Soon enough, the sexual tension increases until things change one night as Jamaicans, Russians, and anyone with a gun are pitted against each other.
“Dirty Love” by Kenya Wright is a work that picks up right from where the debut novel left off. Emily and Kazimir were ice and fire together, particularly once they made their feelings public.
Following the death of two people that were very important to them, this work starts off with our protagonists hellbent on growing their love and seeking vengeance.
Just like “Dirty Kisses,” it is an enthralling story with a whole bunch of mystery, deception turns, and twists. The best thing about this work was the devotion that Kazimir and Emily have for each other.
Kenya Wright also writes a story that comes with a perfect ending. From Prague to Harlem, St Petersburg to Moscow, the Harlem Crew, and Kazimir will stop at nothing to crush all their enemies.
But there are some enemies who know how to hide in the shadows and not everyone who seems part of them is their friend.
In “Dirty Hearts,” Kenya Wright takes everything from his previous works and ramps it up several times.
For much of the novel, Mysh and Kaz are on holiday in Paris and enjoying themselves even though everyone seems intent on drawing them into their battles.
They find the attention of such people annoying though this makes for some entertaining reading. Romping across Paris we learn a lot about Paris, Russia, and Kazimir.
Kenya is an expert at painting real-life images of tourist sites and makes it possible for his readers to experience the different sides of Paris thanks to Emily’s obsession with tunnels and the leather pants Kaz loves to wear.
