Author Kim Wilkins was born in London in the year 1970 and grew up along the seaside north of Brisbane, Australia, after her family moved back when she was only three years old. From The University of Queensland, where she is a senior lecturer, she has a Masters degree, an Honours degree, and a PhD.
Since her first novel came out in the year 1997, “The Infernal”, she has published across many different genres and for quite a few age groups.
Kimberly has been writing for as long as she can remember and is proud that she is able to write in many different genres.
Her novel “The Infernal” won Aurealis Awards for both fantasy and horror.
Kim writes a lot, often by ignoring some unimportant things like washing her kids clothes, and cooking. She has enduring obsessions with things like misty landscapes, Viking age England, pagan mythology, really really tiny dogs, and Led Zeppelin.
She writes fantasy novels under her name and writes romance under the name Kimberly Freeman. Adopting the Kimberly Freeman pen name to honor her maternal grandmother and to try and capture the spirit of the page turner novels she has always enjoyed reading.
“The Autumn Castle” is the first novel in the “Europa” series, which was released in the year 2003. Autumn in Berlin. Christine Starlight lives with her lover Jude, whose beauty and patience have eased her struggle with chronic pain in an artists’ colony. Christine starts to be haunted by childhood memories of a small girl’s vanishing and a blackbird’s wings flapping. Her world is rocked by a childhood friend’s return.
Mayfridh is the ruler over a land where a wolf is the counsellor to a queen, the mortals don’t feel any pain, and fate turns with the fall of an autumn leaf. Christine gets addicted to Mayfridh’s world, which makes Mayfridh grow addicted to Chrinstine’s. She falls dangerously in love with Jude.
Kim Wilkins combines all the elements of fairy tales to make the darkest and most twisted adult fairy tale some have read. She even does a great job of balancing two perspectives at the same time. The book also hits all of the feels, there is sadness, romance, excitement, and an overall wistful atmosphere.
“Giants of the Frost” is the second novel in the “Europa” series, which was released in the year 2004. Scientist Victoria Scott takes a job on a remote island in the Sea of Norway, wanting a quiet place to finish up her doctoral thesis. Victoria is not at all prepared for the odd shadows outside of her cabin window, the tales of mythic monsters that lurk in the forest, and rumors about a murderous hag that sucks out souls while they sleep. Even more frightening than the nightmarish mysteries of the island, everything is so hauntingly familiar about the island to Victoria.
An enigmatic stranger shows up on the island, and Victoria’s sense of foreboding hit its peak. She finds out that they are linked by a conflict that is centuries old, and it can only end with her dying.
Kim Wilkins does a great job of creating a fictional world and making it all feel like a real place. Readers found themselves crying and laughing at different times throughout.
“The Veil of Gold” is the third novel in the “Europa” series, which was released in the year 2008. An ancient gold bear is found in a dilapidated St. Petersburg bathhouse, having been walled up. Researcher Daniel St. Clair and Em Hayword, his frosty colleague head off to the university in Arkhangelsk so they can verify how old it is. On their way they are set adrift mysteriously. Their maps have suddenly become useless. They are exhausted and lost and they turn north, making them sink deeper into the terrors and secrets of the Russian landscape.
The wild and gorgeous Rosa Kovalenka, Daniel’s lost love, fears the worst has happened when Daniel goes missing. She decides that she will go and find him. Doing so will mean facing up to her past and secrets that she has been fighting to keep suppressed. The only way she can save him is for her to move forward, where she finds the haunted Chenchikov clan, who is a family that has their own shadowy tangle of treachery, grief, and desire.
In the impenetrable and the unknowable Russian forest, Rosa meets a wanderer who is full of stories and riddles of the past. This enigmatic being may just hold the key to Daniel and Rosa’s future, or possibly the destruction of their world.
Readers had a tough time putting the book down once they started it, as the fantastical elements are wholly engaging. Kim Wilkins does a great job of tapping into different folklore in her work, be it Russian, Norse, or any other, to tell some dark stories.
“Daughters of the Storm” is the first novel in the “Blood and Gold” series, which was released in the year 2014. Five Royal Sisters, but just one Crown. They are a king’s daughters. Even though they have the same royal blood flowing through their veins, they could not be more different.
Bluebell is a proud warrior and is much stronger than any man, with a heart of iron to match. Rose’s heart is far more passionate, as she is a queen of a neighboring kingdom, and is risking it all for a forbidden love. Twins: Ivy (who is vain and lives for admiration) and Willow (who is zealous and lives for the gods). Then there is Ash, who is discovering her dangerous talent for magic that might be either a gift or a curse.
Their dad is stricken with a mysterious ailment, and they have to come together on a journey of desperation to save him and keep their treacherous stepbrother from taking the throne. Their mission is to locate the powerful witch who is able to cure the king. To succeed on this quest, they will have to get over their differences, and hope the secrets they keep from each other as well as the world never come to light. Should this royal family break, it may just destroy the kingdom.
