In the Shadow of Denali is the first book in the Heart of Alaska series by Kimberley Woodhouse and Tracie Peterson. In this story readers get to meet the main character of Cassidy Ivanoff for the first time.

Cassidy works with John, her father, at Curry Hotel. The new hotel is prestigious and is located just outside of Mt. McKinley. They may work at the same place but they have different jobs. She has taken a job as the assistant to the cook, while her father will be working as the wilderness exploration and expedition guide for the tourists with deep pockets that come to town.

The Curry Hotel is getting ready for a big visit, and that means that Cassidy, John, and everyone else that is on staff at the hotel is extremely busy. They’re getting ready to welcome the United States president, which is a very big deal. He’s coming in on ceremony, on his way to complete a railroad by doing the honor of driving in a golden spike to symbolize that it’s finished and ready to start up for business.

Meanwhile, someone new is coming to town. Allan Brennan is making his way to the Curry Hotel, wanting to work as an apprentice for a seasoned mountain guide familiar with Alaska. His father once died when he was on a climb of Mt. McKinley. Now Allan has worked hard and saved up the money that he has needed to make his way out to Alaskan territory.

The partner that his father climbed with thinks that Allan’s father wouldn’t have died if it weren’t for their guide. Allan doesn’t know what really happened, but one thing that he does know is that he wants to discover what’s true and what is not himself. When he meets Cassidy, a friendship forms between the two of them.

Cassidy joins Allan in starting to investigate this mystery. But once they get started, they are about to find out that maybe it isn’t as cut and dry of a case as they would want it to be. Things are far less obvious and clear than they would have estimated. On top of that, the situation for the two of them may be more dangerous than either of them ever thought that it would be.

Are Allan and Cassidy in danger? Was it the fault of the guide that his father died? Can they get to the bottom of what is going on without putting themselves at risk of harm? Pick up the exciting first book in the Heart of Alaska series in order to find out!

Out of the Ashes is the second book in the Heart of Alaska series by Woodhouse and Peterson. If you liked the events of the first book, be sure to check out the second installment of this series to find out what’s going on.

Collette Langelier and Jean-Michel Langelier are brother and sister. The siblings have been forever changed by the passing of their father. However, his death means that they may not have the same ties that they felt before to France post-war. Collette wants to go on adventure and spends much of her time day dreaming.

Meanwhile, Jean-Michel is dreaming of simpler things for himself. He would mainly like to forget the war and what he went through. It seems that things that remind him of those horrors are just about everywhere. Things may be looking up for him as the universe seemingly answers his call. Jean-Michel is pleasantly surprised when he and Collette get an invitation.

They are invited to visit the Curry Hotel and Alaska. For the two of them, and especially Jean-Michel, it seems that this would be just the change that he has been needing. Perhaps a change in the scenery will do wonders for him, helping to not focus on the past.

Also in Alaska is Katherine Demarchis. She was in a marriage that was mainly made out of force. Now widowed, she is without grief. She would like to forget the danger she felt constantly in with her husband and to be alone in a quiet life. Before that, she’s going with her grandmother on one last trip. The last thing that she thought she would see would be anyone she knew.

Jean-Michel was once in love with her, but they were separated due to things they could not control. They’ve changed over the years, but will it destroy their reunion? Can they find love once more? Can Jean-Michel find peace and heal at last? Read this book to find out!
