K’wan Foye is one of the well known novelists from America, who has written several highly successful books based on the urban fiction genre. He is particularly famous for writing and publishing the Hoot Rat and the Animal series of novels. Initially, author K’wan was set for a therapeutic release, but over the course of time he developed different tastes began writing urban fiction books. Quite early in his writing career, he achieved the feat of becoming a bestselling author. The first book written by him is titled as Gansta, which was released by the Triple Crown publishing house. At the time of the publication of the book, the publishing house was just a small one and the novel was the first one to be released from it. But, the novel became such a big success throughout the world that it helped the publishing house turn into a multi-million dollar company in a very short span of time. For the release of his second book, author K’wan went on to sign a contract with the St. Martin’s Press. The writing career of author K’wan began in the year 2002. Very soon in his writing career, he became a noteworthy author of the urban-lit history and began drawing excellent reviews from all over the world.
After the success of his second book, the St. Martin’s publishing house quickly signed him to a multi-book deal. In the year 2008, author K’wan won the Black Author award, which was awarded to him by the Black Press Radio for his bestselling novella titled ‘Blow’. Since the day author K’wan entered the publishing world, he has made appearances in a number of popular literary magazines, including Pages, Big News, Entertainment Weekly, Vibe, Felon, The Library Journal, King, Time Magazine, Cluth, The New York Press, etc. Author K’wan has also been interviewed by the MTV News related to an appearance in hip hop fiction and also by the national public radio. Apart from being a well established author, K’wan is also a mentor to a children’s NGO, a motivational speaker, as well as the CEO of the Black Dawn company. As of today, author K’wan lives in New Jersey. He likes to spend most of his time doing research works for his upcoming novels. The achievements made by K’wan in his writing career also include winning the Street Lit Award Medals in the years 2012 and 2013 for his adult fiction novels.
The American author K’wan Foye has written many novel series and one of them is the Hood Rat series. The first book in the series bears the same name ‘Hood Rat’ and this book was published by Macmillan on 31st October of the year 2006. The plot starts with a young woman Yoshi, who is beautiful and larcenous. Playing with the hearts of men along with their pockets is the way of her living. All that glitters is not gold, this learns when she was very young and she knows that life is hard in this world. At the end of her rope is a former star of high school basketball named Billy. She thinks that what men do is cheat on every woman and according to her all men are dogs. Hence, in the arms of women is where she secretly seeks comfort. This goes on day in and day out until she meets someone, a man who truly loved her and reevaluates her feelings that was buried inside her from a long time. Reese is another chick from the story she is trying everything to be with Joneses. She always felt the love that was missing from her life and as she is trying to find it she gets confused. She is not able to decide what to choose for her life. Her normal behavior of the one night stand leaves her pregnant and now she must break the cycle that has been passed down in her family from mother to daughter and she is now on her own in the world. Rhonda is another woman in the story with the age of twenty-something and she has three kids and their fathers are three different people and the system she is riding is till the bank. When someone says work, she finds it as a dirty word and she is living a ghetto superstar’s life. This is because the government is giving her multiple checks and she is also playing with men and their pockets. Later, one of the sponsors decides that enough is enough and it’s time to get a payback, things get too ugly. The neighborhood in which they live will never be the same again.
The second book written in the Hood Rat series is titled ‘Still Hood’ and it was published by Macmillan on 2nd October of the year 2007. On the streets of Brooklyn only the strong can survive. Dena Jones, who has the ability to survive as well as succeed in the city, she decides to get out of it. She has made her mind that she will no longer live in Crooklyn and is ready to do anything to get what she wants, even manipulating men for her cause. If you want to know about her then you should ask Lance, her boyfriend or Michelle, his girlfriend. Another character in the story is True, who has finally got what he wanted for a long time. As soon as his debut album came out, the people on the streets went crazy. True’s group was murdered along with most part of his dreams, but his life is finally getting ahead. As we know Karma is a bitch, it catches up with True’s life. Somebody in the city wants him to die and he doesn’t have a single clue why, or maybe he does. Yoshi and Jah’s story was supposed to have a good romance in their life, but in ghetto fairy tales don’t exist. She is always busy with her rough work and Jah is trying his best to understand her situation, but the problem is he doesn’t know till when he can trust her. He had already promised Yoshi that no matter what her past brings, he will still love her. At the same time, he has a bigger problem that he has to take care of. It is his job to stop the person who is trying to kill True.

Hands down one of my favorite authors!! Absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE all of the books by K’wan!! I’ve been addicted to his stories since the very first day I picked one up at the library 10 yrs ago. (Animal was my first K’wan book) I look forward to any book that’s coming out by him, but must say The Animal series is my favorite!!
