His newest novel release is going nowhere, and his mid-life crisis is starting and making matters worse, he is burdened by his agent, the one he maybe deserves, Elsie Thirkettle, a minuscule but a determined individual who claims that neither to enjoy any literature of any sort nor a company of writers.

However, like expected, bad things turns worse when Ethelred ex-wife Geraldine vanishes proximal to his Sussex home.

Soon this disappearance turns out to be a murder case, and soon the police begin their investigation and finally come to a conclusion that Geraldine might have been a victim of a local series killer. On the other hand, Elsie somehow tends to differ because the serial killer victims have been “Sad Cows” while on the other hand Geraldine was one Scheming Bitch.

Soon the tireless Elsie bullies Ethelred into undertaking his investigations, however as their investigation continues, Elsie starts to suspect that her client’s claims are not reliable as he claims.

The Herring Seller’s Apprentice is a fantastic mystery that will grip your attention from the first page to the last. The novel is told from a writer’s perspective that has three personas, including a romance writer and a mystery writer. The two main characters Elsie and Ethelred will make you laugh as the author has keenly captured their voice correctly. Apart from the character development, there is the quirky type of humor. The plot flows well while the other minor characters are well written if you love murder mystery and stories about writers, then The Herring Seller’s Apprentice is the right choice for you.

Ten Little Herrings

For Elsie, finding Ethelred in a neglected hotel proves somehow easy, however bringing him home proves to be a hard task than she ever expected. However, as Elsie observes, who could have predicted that in a hotel full of stamp collectors, that the guests would all of sudden start killing each other?

One of the hotel guests is found brutally stabbed. However, when wealthy Russian leader with a significant political influence is murdered, the suspicion now falls to the remaining hotel guests. Elsie is caught in a dilemma, and she cannot decide whether to pursue her natural desire to interfere with the police investigation work and her willingness to escape the town’s chocolate. On the other hand, Ethelred seems to know more about the recent murders than he is letting on. Finally, the moment of truth comes when Elsie must assemble the various suspects and finally get to reveal the truth.

Their supper companions somehow seem ill-assorted and the pair (Elsie and Ethelred) begin to wonder what might happen is their dinner setting appears to be an ideal set up for murder, and as a matter of fact, the house reminds them a Cluedo, a game they had been playing earlier in the day.

Halfway through their meal, their host makes a short speech and then disappears. He is later found dead in his study library. Could it be suicide or murder? That is the crucial question that everyone asks, and nearly everyone in the dinner means that had the opportunity and motive. For Ethelred and Elsie (Crime novelist and his agent) are immediately forced to investigate.
