L. J. Martin is an American author with more than 40 book length titles to his name. While most authors typically stick to one or two genres of writing, Martin is one unconventional writer. His works range from historicals, mysteries, thrillers, westerns, a political thesis, a book of cartoons, a writing guide, a cookbook, and a nonfiction work on his struggles with cancer ( he has twice come back from cancer). Despite not sticking to one genre, L. J. Martin has continued to experience runaway success with most of his titles attaining bestseller status on Amazon and around the globe. In addition to being an accomplished writer, Martin is an NBC approved producer, who also produces independently. His popularity knows no geographical boundaries as networks in Germany and the United States have been optioned L. J. Martin novels. He is a man of many interests including photography (he maintains a photography website ljmartinwolfpack and has over 100 videos on YouTube), hunting, fishing, shooting, gardening, traveling, and cooking (he documents this on wolfpackranch.com).

In addition to writing, he is also an optioned screenwriter with about three screenplays optioned. As one of the founders of Wolfpack Publishing, he has been heavily involved in its success, designing several hundred of its designs and publishing over 400 works with the company. His wife Kat shares his creative genius, being a New York Times bestselling author with more than 55 romantic and historical suspense novels to her name. When he is not writing, L. J. Martin loves to travel, and has toured extensively in the US and abroad. For Martin, travel is an opportunity to make new friends, gain new material, and just enjoy the world. He currently lives in Montana with his wife Kat and their four sons. They live in a small ranch house shadowed by Montana’s elegant Sapphire Mountains, with the Lolo National Forest a walking distance away. The Martins love to spend their winters near the Santa Barbara Channel, in California.

L. J. is an active member of the writing community being a member of the Thriller Writers of America, Western Fictioneers, Western Writers of America, Mystery Writers of America, and the Society of Professional Journalists. One of the foremost authorities in Western history, Martin frequently lectures and writes on the subject with his most notable events the Pikes Peak Writers Conference and the Romance Writers of America.

One of the most prolific writers of his generation, L.J. Martin’s first work was the 1988 published novel, Buckshot. Continuing in the same vein, he published the first of his very popular series of Western novels, El Lazo of the Clint Ryan series in 1991. Given that, he was born and bred in California, he had an opportunity to meet many of the dust bowl immigrants who helped him draw a more accurate picture of the West. His upbringing as a wrangler, hunter, and packer help to embellish his narratives and make them more historically accurate. The last of the very popular Clint Ryan series was published in 2000. The Montana series of novels is also one of L. J. Martin’s most popular works. The first novel in the series, Stranahan was published in 2002 to critical acclaim. Unlike the Clint Ryan series of novels, the Montana books have a different protagonist for each novel. Nonetheless, all of the books are set in the Wild West Montana countryside. They tell the stories of families trying to eke out a living in the lawless country, of hunting down criminals, of family feuds and revenge, and an overarching theme of destiny. What makes these novels so enthralling is that they have a great degree of accuracy in setting and character. L. J. asserts that he meticulously researches his westerns, to ensure factual accuracy and context, as having factual inaccuracies gets the reader out of their reading trance which he claims is what every writer needs to avoid.

One of the most popular of L. J. Martins works is the first novel of the John Clinton Ryan series of novels, El Lazo. Set in 1840s American Wild West, the polity of Alta California is in a state of tension with the Native Americans at odds with the Mexicans. For the Indians the most important thing is to defend their tribal lands and heritage from contamination and annexation by any foreign invaders. The most important thing for the Mexicans is to keep their idyllic life intact in the face of the Native American agitation. Nevertheless, both groups are powerless against the might of the new power explosively expanding westwards. The new state is determined to take the entire country up to the Pacific. The Mexicans and Indians are doomed to lose their lifestyle, regardless of how much they may try to prevent this from happening. But out of nowhere appears a seaman, an adventurer, all alone and seemingly stranded. His name is John Clinton Ryan. He has had the tough luck of arriving in the land at its most tumultuous period. He will have to learn how to fight like a vaquero, if he is to survive a land that is full of Mexican Soldados, while also keeping himself away from the clutches of a cruel sea captain who swore to hang him, if he ever set eyes of him.

Another popular L. J. Martin novel is the third title in the John Clinton Ryan series of books, The Devil’s Bounty. The novel is set in California’s Barbary Coast, which is beset by gold fever that has left behind lawlessness, fires of passion, and violence. This is a place where everything is for sale and nothing is forbidden, where lives worth less than a mound of sparkling dust. For John Clinton Ryan, the newest arrival in San Fransisco, the mission is to rescue Apolonia Vega, a damsel that was forcibly taken away from her father’s farm by a motley crew of drunken gold hungry prospectors a few weeks past. The men intend to take her abroad where she could face a fate worse than death. Martin takes us alongside the protagonist as he moves through the bleak side streets of China town, seeking to rescue the beautiful Vega and mete out a measure of justice using the only means the violent city knows, cold blood and hot lead.
