A successful book series written by author Laura L. Sullivan is known as the Under the Green Hill series. It is comprised of two books released between 2010 and 2011. Each of the two books revolves around the life of the central character named Meg Morgan, a girl aged 14. Author Sullivan has set the stories in the English countryside and has mentioned the adventures of Meg Morgan and her siblings. Other essential characters depicted in the books by Sullivan include Rowan Morgan, Silly Morgan, James Morgan, Gwidion, Finn Fachan, Dickie Rhys, and a few others. The debut book of this series is entitled ‘Under the Green Hill’. It was released by the Henry Holt publication in 2010. The book opens by depicting that Meg Morgan’s parents send her to live with her elderly relatives in England for the summer holidays along with her siblings.
All the children look forward to exploring the exciting locations of the countryside. They specifically wish to visit ancient mansions and discover old attics filled with fortunes of treasures. However, they had never imagined in their strangest dreams that they will find themselves at the center of a fairy war. When Meg Morgan comes to know that her brother Rowan has pledged to support the beautiful queen of the fairies and fight for her, she fears that it might land him in trouble. So, she strives to prevent him from taking the difficult route. Later, she realizes that the Midsummer War has far more importance than just being a battle of mythic creatures. It has a bearing on all the creatures who have a life.
In such a testing time, Meg Morgan wonders if she should take the side of her family or the land that provides every living creature, including her. This novel paints a perfect picture of fantasy creatures and fairies. Sullivan has shown that such creatures can never be trusted even though their guardianship is highly required by the natural world. While this story mostly revolves around the adventures of the four Morgan siblings, it focuses mainly on the 14-year-old Meg Morgan. She is depicted as a self-confident, responsible, and independent girl.
The second installment of this series is called ‘Guardian of the Green Hill’. It was also published by Henry Holt and Company in 2011. This book also features the same set of central characters along with the important additions of Gwidion, a mysterious painter, and Phyllida Ash, the Guardian. Initially, it is mentioned that the fairy war in which Meg Morgan was involved along with her brothers and sister several weeks ago has come to an end. But, a new battle has taken root to take control of the world of fairies. The Morgan siblings come across a painter named Gwidion, who has agreed to give them art lessons. But, they seem to be unaware of his sinister plans. Gwidion intends to bring about the destruction of the Green Hill’s Guardian, a lady who helps to maintain peace between humans and fairies.
Meg Morgan does not have any idea about the evil plans of the artist. Her mind is focused more on the realization that she has all the qualities of becoming the next Guardian when the time of her great-great-aunt gets over. But, she also thinks that she is just a small girl and has a lot of time to decide whether or not she must go ahead with her plans of taking up such an enormous responsibility. Later, the boy she loves, Finn, gets captured by the fairies. This makes Meg desperate to get him back. She decides to take it upon herself to bring back Finn from the captivity of the fairies. Throughout this story, Sullivan has shown that Meg Morgan is visited by many mythological creatures. They thank her for winning the battle on the Midsummer Night and waking them from sleep. This book leaves the readers eagerly waiting for the next installment. Its plot is also very engaging and contains exciting characters as well as an interesting storyline.
