Susan Baumann, writing under the pseudonym Laura Landon, was a historical romance author who spent a decade teaching high school before transitioning to a career in business. After nearly another decade in business, she penned her debut novel and became a full-time author. She had always been an avid reader of romance novels, and after the success of her debut in 2010, she was hooked. Laura spent much of her time creating beautiful ever-afters for her heroes and heroines. She lived alongside her friends and family in the Midwest, where she was a vital member of her small community. In addition to writing novels, she served on the hospital board, organized fund drives for social activities and amenities, and directed centennial activities for her town. Laura authored more than two dozen Regency romances in the “Brotherhood,” “Redeemed,” “Intimate,” “Bedford Street Brigade,” “Cast,” “Ransomed Jewels,” “Traitor’s Club,” “Rich Man Poor Man,” and “Seasons” series, along with several standalone novels. Her works were published by Prairie Muse Publishing and translated into several languages, including German and Japanese. In 2012, she celebrated one of the best days of her life when three of her novels were published by Amazon’s Montlake Romance. The publishing line went on to publish six of her novels, some of which were optioned for publication in Turkey and Russia.
Laura passed away in August 2024.
Laura often called herself a senior citizen living the dream. She had always wanted to become an author, though she initially pursued a career as a music teacher and later retired to run a MiniMart and a Dairy Queen. It was during her time running her own business that she decided to try writing during her downtime. Once she started writing, she knew she had found her passion and embraced the life of a full-time author. Landon’s novels were known for their beautiful settings, often sprinkled with a little suspense and a mysterious twist. Her novels typically averaged more than a million reads each month, and she was always very grateful to her readers. She believed that her life experiences helped her write realistic romances, as she knew how to craft authentic relationships. Laura did extensive research for her stories, particularly focusing on the Regency period in which many of her novels were set, as she knew her readers were savvy about the era. With thorough research, she created heroines and heroes with authentic flaws and strengths, building backstories and nurturing relationships that culminated in crises and ultimately led to a happily ever after.
Laura Landon’s Cast in Shadows is a fascinating romance about Gideon Sheffield, the heir apparent to the Duchy of Sheffield. However, this fact hardly registered with Gideon, as he had been suffering from intense pain due to seizures since he was eight. These seizures were so severe that they sometimes led to violent outbursts. His late mother had suffered similar seizures, which eventually drove her mad and took her life. At the age of eighteen, Gideon went to live at the sanitarium where his mother had sought refuge before her death. There, he was under the care of Dr. Cornwall, an expert in the field. When Gideon turned eighteen, Dr. Cornwall’s daughter, Eve, joined the practice. A strong and dedicated woman, Eve was as committed to the patients as her father. She believed she had found the cause of Gideon’s condition, despite the lack of progress for over a decade. She saw Gideon as a courageous, noble, and intelligent man trying to make sense of a life crippled by disease. Eve persuaded her father to let her treat him, and through her gentle questions, the two developed a close friendship that hinted at something more. Eve suspected that something in Gideon’s diet was causing his seizures and introduced a restrictive diet. Soon, he began having fewer seizures, but Eve noticed some bizarre occurrences that led her to believe Gideon’s condition may have been intentionally caused.
Cast in Ruin by Laura Landon tells the story of Benjamin and Rachel, who are forced into marriage despite harboring dark secrets that could jeopardize their union. Benjamin Waverly, the son of the Duke of Townsend, could not marry despite his noble lineage due to a secret he had kept for years. He feared that once married, his wife might reveal his despicable secret, risking his family’s reputation. Ben believed he was destined to live as a rake, but his father forced him into a marriage that he feared would ruin both him and his beautiful and brilliant bride. Rachael Newton, the daughter of the Earl of Kendrick, had initially rejected Ben’s proposal, as she too harbored a secret that could destroy her family if revealed. She had once been weak and paid dearly for it, and she was determined to keep her larger secret hidden, even if it meant being forced into a marriage she didn’t want.
Cast in Ice, the second novel in the “Cast in Scandal” series, is the story of Lady Winfred Waverley, the Duke of Townsend’s daughter. Winfred has a terrible secret that has kept her on the fringes of society for years, as she sought to protect her family from the consequences of the secret being exposed. If the secret were revealed, it would not only destroy her family but also ruin her younger sister Anne’s chances of finding a suitor. When Winfred begins receiving blackmail letters, she is forced to visit a gambling hell known as “The Soiled Dove,” where she becomes an unstoppable winner. As a skilled gambler, she uses her winnings to pay off her blackmailers. However, her success attracts the attention of the gambling den’s managers, who set out to ruin her after losing significant amounts of money to her. One man discovers her secret and believes she is harboring a murderer everyone thought was long dead. Determined to prove it, he decides to get closer to Winfred, believing that by doing so, he can free her from her desperate situation and bring a fugitive to justice. If successful, she might no longer need to visit The Soiled Dove for money, and he might even be able to thaw her icy resolve and win her heart.
