Laura Lee Guhrke is an American award-winning historical romance writer who is best known for the “Girl Bachelors”, “Abandoned at the Altar”, “Guilty”, and the “An American Heiress in London” series of novels alongside several freestanding novels. Lee Guhrke published her debut novel “Prelude to Heaven” in 1994 and given the massive success of her first title, she has never looked back since. She has written over twenty historical romance titles that have gone on to win her critical acclaim and numerous honors over the years. Some of her most prestigious honors include the RITA Award by the Romance Writers of America, several awards from the All About Romance, and the Romantic Times. In fact, the Romantic Times asserted that she is one of historical romance’s most natural voices to emerge in the second decade of the new millennium. Her titles regularly make the bestseller lists of the New York Times and the USA Today, with her bestselling novel “Guilty Pleasures” getting the gong for the 2004 Best European Historical Romance by the Romantic Times. “Conor’s Way” that was published in 1997 was the winner of the Best 1997 Best Historical Romance RITA Award.

Unlike many writers that knew very early on that all they wanted to do was write, when Laura was a child, all she wanted to do was become a marine biologist working on the Galapagos Islands. This was until she dissected her first frog in a biology class and hated it so much that she knew she had to find another career. Trying her hand in writing, her teacher was her biggest discouragement as she told her that she had no future in writing as she wrote stories that were too sappy. Guhrke vowed to prove her wrong by becoming the best writer she could ever be. In the meantime, she went to college, took a four-year business degree, and went on to work in the corporate world for a further seven years. In time, she decided that she had better fulfill her dream and set out to write her first novel. By the end of 1991, she had finished writing “Prelude to Heaven”, which was published in 1994. What drew Laura to historical romance is that she has always dreamed of having a time machine and there is no better way to do it than with a historical romance. Historical romance makes it possible to go back in time to capture the hearts of gorgeous warriors and dukes, experience the adventure and excitement of the times without leaving the comfort and safety of her cable TV, dishwasher, and home. Laura lives with her husband, a golden retriever, and two cats in the small town of Eagle in Idaho just outside Boise the state capital. When she is not writing, she sometimes does help her parents run the family construction company given her business background. She also does some fly-fishing, takes long walks, wake-boards, and skis when the weather permits.

Laura Lee Guhrke’s historical romances are delightful reads with many thematic and character similarities. Most of the novels feature your typical overlooked heroine that has decided to go out of the mold of societal expectations to work or take up masculine roles. They work or interact with persons that have treated them with begrudging respect but all but ignored them. However, Guhrke goes against the conventional mold of casting the characters as ugly ducklings. These are not your ugly heroines who finally get their haircut, and buy new clothes to become beautiful princesses that sweep the heroes off of their feet. The heroines do not undergo any significant change in personality or dressing yet the way the men do perceive them ultimately changes. The men are awakened to the feminine qualities of the heroines, and come to the realization that all that they believed about the women was wrong. On the other hand, the women too experience a change in perspective about the men in their lives. Even as they had either stereotyped/generalized or worshipped/idealized them, they begin to see the real men that they are underneath their facade. They come to see them as human beings with vices and virtues that they had never seen before which makes it possible to have better relationships with them.

“And Then He Kissed Her” is the first novel of the Girl Bachelors series of novels by Laura Guhrke. Emmaline Dove is a sensible and talented secretary to the Viscount Harry Marlowe, who has decided that she needs to write a book showcasing her expertise in etiquette. She works for one of the city’s biggest publishers, and so she thinks that she is perfectly positioned to write and publish her book. However, after writing and submitting her novels to her boss, she is turned down several times, only to find out that Marlowe has not been reading them. It turns out that in addition to his aversion for matrimony and a love for can-can dancers, he is also a liar. Her boss finds reading any book about etiquette painful torture, and does not believe anybody would read them. Besides, he does not think that his secretary excellent as she is at her job could write something that anybody would love to read. However, Emmaline is not one to be put down so easy. She confronts him, resigns without notice, and calls him a liar, leaving his office and business in shambles. Deciding to teach the wayward secretary a lesson he vows to seduce her. But one kiss makes him realize that there is more fire and passion in her than he had ever imagine. He cannot get the taste of those luscious lips out of his mind.

“The Wicked Ways of a Duke” picks up from where the debut novel of the series left off. The lead in the novel is Prudence Bosworth, a seamstress who inherits a massive fortune from a man she had never seen, who asserted that he was her father. But with the fortune comes one condition, she needs to marry within a year if she is to access any of the money. Prudence had always looked forward to the day when she would find romance and love. While she needs the money, she is determined to only marry for love, even if it costs her the fortune. Meanwhile, the Duke of St. Cyres full name Rhys de Winter is determined to sweep her off her feet, and has brought all his chivalry to bear. His charm seems to be working even though behind the quick smile and quick wit is a cynicism that Bosworth knows nothing about. The duke needs to marry an heiress and making the seamstress his wife would go a long way to resuscitate his declining empire. He thinks nothing of his deception until Prudence gets wind of it and drops him, leaving him renouncing his evil ways and begging to be taken back.
