She finds true love in a university student and her feelings for him grow stronger than friendship. But, she does not get to stay with him forever and gets separated. She is advised by her mother to leave Norway and start a new life in America. However, she does not have enough money as well as feels afraid of going there alone. She meets Roald Bjorklund, who is a widower and is planning to go to America. He is a good, hardworking man and is in desperate need of a wife to take care of his young son. After three long years, they become successful in reaching the New York City with the hope of building a happy life for themselves and their children. They arrive in the Dakota territory on the banks of the Red River of the North and get settled there. However, they get to face much hardship and have to struggle for their livelihood. They have huge faith in this untamed land and hope to recover from their hardships of the winter. The novel brought wide appreciations for Lauraine and she went to receive the Silver Angel Award. She strives to keep her farm and family together against the overwhelming griefs and unhealthy circumstances. As the winter passes by, Ingeborg receives some help from the distant cousin of Roald, Haaken. He takes care of the field work, whereas Ingeborg concentrates on raising her children.
