After helping her gain consciousness, Buck Carrell asks her how did she come in such a situation? The woman answers by saying that she a nearby stage was held up and she was on it at that time. She urges Buck to investigate to which he agrees. After his return from the initial investigation, Buck Carrell finds that the woman has disappeared.

As the hostile Apaches pose as a great threat to the wagon’s safety, Coke Bright decides to serve as its guide. Soon, he realizes that the major danger to his life is from the ones inside the wagon rather than those outside it. Another part of this book is in the form of Ray Kelly’s story. Five years ago, he was charged with stealing cattle and was sent to the Yuma Prison. Now, he has returned back to his hometown and is determined to take vengeance. Ray Kelly is not welcomed in Welton as no one likes him or wants him to live with them. Even the town’s sheriff wants him gone. But, Ray Kelly thinks that he has lived long enough with the bitter and lonely dream of having vengeance to get dissuaded. He does not pay any heed to the hatred shown by others and moves ahead with his mission. He knows he is not going to stop at any cost and only a bullet to his head can bring a halt to his progress. Soon, the people of the town recognize Ladd Buckner’s stitching work as a typical one known to them very well and call the town’s marshal to investigate. But, before the marshal can let his findings out in the open, he gets killed while trying to prevent a bank robbery cross firing. A letter is discovered from the marshal’s pocket that reveals that Ladd Buckner has served a term for his involvement in a past bank robbery and has now been released.
Ladd Buckner feels sad at the marshal’s killing. He decides to find the robbers and make them pay for killing the marshal. In the next tale, Tom Barker is seen returning back to his tiny cow town named Beatty. Around 15 years ago, Tom’s mother had left him alone and had run away with her lover in the same town. After his mother had gone, Tom Barker was repeatedly abused by his father, who worked as a freighter. Even the authorities did not intervene at his miserable condition. Now, Tom Barker is all grown up, has become wealthy, and has arrived in his hometown again. He has the intention of settling the score with the cow town for rejecting him. Tom Barker is equipped with a gun, but he knows he will have to make use of his wealth and his wit to outsmart and defeat the wealthy locals. He wishes to prove them wrong in thinking that he would never come back and would never achieve anything big in life.
