Lauren Blakely is an American best-selling author. She was born and raised in California, where she still lives with her family, and her dogs. Her novels are both edgy, and sexy.
Her friends describe her as light-hearted, and free spirited. Always bursting with enthusiasm, when she first learned of her commercial success, Blakely reportedly danced around, and kissed every dog she could find. She’s also been said to have a winning sense of humor, which she takes pride in– she always tries to incorporate humor into her books. Laughter is is important to Lauren Blakely, second only to love and family. Family does not stop with its two-legged members for Blakely, though. Her furry friends are incredibly important to her as well. She has said that she tends to do her best novel planning when she is walking her dogs. The idea for her first novel, “Caught Up In Us,” was actually conceived during one of these walks. “Caught Up In Us” is one of nine New York Times Best Sellers that Lauren Blakely has penned.
“Caught Up In Us” is the story of a forbidden, dangerous affair in the workplace. It follows Kat Harper and her relationship with her brother’s best friend, Bryan. Kat and Brian share a fiery summer-fling, but like most summer romances, it was not made to last. Five years after their original fling, the two are reunited when Bryan is assigned to be Kat’s business mentor. However, things have changed since then. Kat is trying to cultivate her career as a jewelry designer, and Bryan is the head of his own, successful business. The passion that was once between them had come to an end. Good thing, too. After all, sex is not permitted between coworkers. It soon becomes obvious to Kat, though, that the feelings she once had for Bryan are returning. Bryan, though, is hesitant. His company had recently went under fire for innappropriate workplace relations, and a second sex scandal could sink his career for good. Blakely spins a tale of lust versus ethics, of secrecy versus passion as Kat and Bryan rekindle the flame that burned between them so long ago.
Blakely has an affinity for weaving stories involving work and romance. Her second novel followed a similar sort of pattern. “Pretending He’s Mine,” is another novel about people who were not supposed to fall in love. There are many major differences between Lauren Blakely’s second novel and her first one, but the most notable seems to be that “Pretending He’s Mine” is told from the perspective of the story’s hero, rather than its’ heroine. The novel follows down-on-his-luck actor, Reeve Larkin. Larkin is a stereotypical dreamboat. Handsome, and brooding, women just seem to turn to putty in his strong hands. The heroine of the novel, Sutton Brenner, is described as shrewd. She’s a difficult to get along with casting director in need of a fake fiance. Naturally, Larkin signs up for the job, hoping to improve his career and reclaim his fame. The fake romance between the two quickly escalates into something not-so-fake. Their love blossoms in the hustle and bustle of New York, where even a simple evening in a library or watching a show on Broadway can quickly turn into a passionate love-making session.
Blakely’s passionate story telling took the US by storm, and her novels quickly ascended top selling lists across the nation. It was her ability to go where other writers would not, to explore sexuality fearlessly and with excitement that enchanted her readers. Her characters make love on top of cars, in public libraries, backstage during concerts, on the balcony and just about anyhwere else imaginable. Her attention to detail enhances the experience for her readers, as well. Pouring her heart and fantasies into page after page of lustful affairs. She has mentioned that the sex scenes are some of her favorite to write. Her own joy really shows through her work. Heat eminates off of every word Lauren Blakely pens. Fire, desire, and danger spring off of the page and grip the reader, making them contagious and irresistable.
Adding to the irresistability of Blakely’s novels, is her ability to create complex, fun to read about characters. Her favorite type of hero to write about is one who is dominant. He doesn’t take no for an answer, and he always gets what he wants. Alpha-males seem to draw in the most readers, according to Blakely. While each of her characters are unique, she likes to keep their strong exterior consistent in all of her novels. She describes them as “dirty-talking… with hearts of gold.” Dirty-talk is an important facet of Blakely’s novels. She has told interviewers that dialogue is the most influential part of grounding a reader in a scene. The reader can not make themselves physically feel the world Blakely has built for them, but they can almost make themselves hear it.
Blakely believes that it is important for herself to be attracted to her heroes, and often puts a lot of research into designing the build and style of her leading-males. When doing research for her novel “Consumed by You,” Blakely reportedly spent hours ogling firemen. She kidded in an interview with Megan Erikson that it was a difficult, stressful part of her career.
Lauren Blakely claims that her favorite type of book to write (and to read) is second-chance romances. She believes there’s something invigorating about two people who have fallen apart only to be tied back together by the strings of fate. She also deeply enjoys stories about friends who slowly become lovers over time. She is drawn by the magic of watching a relationship evolve and blossom into something meaningful. It warms her heart.
Lauren Blakely’s books have appeared on the New York Times, USA Today, Amazon, and iBooks best seller lists. She also writes for young adults under the pen name Daisy Whitley. In her free time Blakely likes to spend time with her friends, family, and dogs, eat italian food, read, listen to music, and meet new people.
