About Lauren Kate:

After being raised in the Dallas Texas area and then attending the University of California where she earned a Master’s Degree in Fiction, the young author, Lauren Kate, has quickly become an internationally bestselling author. She writes young adult fiction novels and her books have been translated into over thirty languages. Lauren grew up in Dallas as a Jewish child, with a Catholic father. She attended school in Atlanta, and started writing in New York (she has a master’s degree in fiction from the prestigious University of California, Davis). She now lives in Los Angeles with her husband, her daughter, and their dog.

Origin of Ideas and Writing

Lauren Kate grew up Jewish but with a Catholic father, so some interest in theology was always present. Lauren reports that she had a very memorable college professor who taught the bible eloquently. She mentions enjoying delving into; what most people think of now days as angels, and what they originally were in more traditional religion and literature. Some of her characters (like Daniel and Luce) have religious significance. Lauren Kate has an interest in blurring the lines between good and evil and states “ I’m interested in questioning old notions of angels and demons, heaven and hell.”

Books

Lauren Kate’s books include the very popular novels The Betrayal of Natalie Hargrove and Fallen, which reached number 3 on The New York Times Best Seller List for children’s chapter books on January 8, 2010 and on Wednesday, April 6, 2011, Fallen had spent one year and four months—with brief interruptions—on the list. Fallen also reached the bestseller list for Indie and USA Today. Torment, the sequel to Fallen, was released on 28 of September 2010. It debuted at number one (1) on the New York Times Bestseller List while Fallen came in that week right behind at number 2, and remained at that position through the week of October 17. The paperback edition of Fallen debuted at number one (1) on the list as well. The third book in the Fallen series, entitled Passion, was released on June 14, 2011 and on June 23, Passion reached the number seven (7) spot on the USA Today Bestseller List, in the category of books overall. In addition to all of this success on July 3, 2011, Passion qualified the Fallen books for the Series section of the New York Times Bestseller List….. putting it on the list at number two (2), right behind the Hunger Games books! All of these books also appeared on numerous bestsellers lists. Fallen in Love is a collection of novellas that is set in the Middle Ages, they tell the back-stories of several of the Fallen series’ main characters and was published on January 24, 2012. The book Rapture, is the final installment of the series, and was published on June 12, 2012.

Movie Time

Disney optioned the film rights to the entire book series on the day of Fallen’s release (December 9, 2009). Lauren Kate was very happy to announce that in February of 2014 the casting for the film has officially gotten under way with the lead characters of Luce and Daniel being played by Addison Timlin and Jeremey Irvine. Everyone involved professes great excitement and each of them are sure that the venture will be a great success, much as each of Lauren Kate’s books have been.

Characters and Stories

Written in the year 2009, Fallen is the author’s first novel and is in the gothic fantasy and romance for young adults genre. This story centers around Lucinda, Luce, Price who is sent to a reform school in Georgia after it is thought that she has killed a boy by kissing him a kiss of fire. Shortly after arriving at the school Luce makes many friends and enemies while also discovering that she is not the only one that has supernatural powers. She then learns that the others with supernatural powers are all fallen angels working for God. Only she and Penn are mortals. It becomes apparent that there are also people at the school that are evil and working for the opposition, Satan. Daniel falls in love with Luce. He is also a fallen angel that has not chosen the light or the dark. Instead of either side Daniel chooses love, his love for Luce. It appears that Daniel is the one who could change the odds to the side of good or evil. Since time began there has been a curse that has caused Luce’s death over and over and over again. In Fallen Daniel is trying to save her and not allow it to happen again. This happens at first through his trying to stay away, then from him trying to hide the fact of the curse and by attempting to ensure she doesn’t learn too rapidly

In Torment, released less than a year after Fallen, it is finally revealed, by Daniel, to Luce, who is now seventeen (17) years old, the curse they are both under. He explains to her how they will continuously fall in love, she will die and be reborn, until they can figure out the curse they are both under and how to lift it. Torment brings to the forefront teenage love that spans the eons since the beginning of time, angst, complex interpersonal relationships and, most of all, the never ending battle between good and evil, the light and the dark. Daniel, like in Fallen, spends most of Torment trying to protect Luce from everything from their love to the dark angels. The outcasts also become a vital part of the story in Torment. The outcasts are not demons nor are they angels but they are out for Luce. They are desperate to catch her for their own before the elders are able to do so.

For Many Years to Come

Based on her growing success over the last five years, and with each of her books, it appears that Lauren Kate has won a much deserved place in the hearts of millions of adoring fans. Her long term place in American young adult fiction books has, most assuredly, been secured and will allow her to continue to write as many books as she likes for as long as she likes
