The series is written by a well established novelist of America named R.A. Salvatore. This series is actually a combination of several trilogies penned by Salvatore that are set in the same world of the Forgotten Realms. In the overall series, author Salvatore has described the exploits of a dark elf named Drizzt and his friends. Salvatore wrote the first 3 books as prequels to the rest of the series. The series can be enjoyed in the best way if read in the chronological order. Among the trilogies that make this overarching series, there is Dark Elf series, Icewind Dale series, Paths of Darkness series, Hunter’s Blades series, Neverwinter, Sellswords, Transistions, Homecoming, The Sundering, Legacy of Drow, and Companions Codex. After the successful release of the books, many graphic adaptations of the stories were made and sold for the hardcore fans. The characters featuring in The Cleric Quintet series integrate into the series, however, they are actually independent characters and not part of this series formally. All the novels became highly successful and managed to reach out to a vast number of readers from across the world. They were read and appreciated by numerous critics as well. Most of whom read the books liked them very much and spoke praises about the characters and the settings. Author Salvatore was able to establish himself among the most successful writers of fantasy stories because of this large series.

R.A. Salvatore is a renowned author of the fantasy genre of novels. He has a tremendously loyal and ever expanding following and his books make regular appearances on the bestselling list of the NY Times. Salvatore has successfully sold over 10 million printed copies of this book altogether. Numerous translations of Salvatore’s books have taken place over the years in multiple languages, including Greek, Bulgarian, German, Czech, Yiddish, Turkish, Polish, Spanish, Finnish, Russian, Portuguese, Croatian, French, Hungarian, and Italian. Salvatore took to writing for the first time in 1988 and came up with his first publication, The Crstal Shard. This was also the first novel that featured his most popular character, Drizzt Do Urden. Since then, he has not looked back and has included a book every year in his multi-volume series. Salvatore says that he realized his love for literature and fantasy when he was in his college’s sophomore year. He had received a copy of The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien for Christmas that year and it inspired him a lot. Immediately, Salvatore decided to change his degree to journalism from computer science. He went on to obtain a B.Sc degree from the Fitchburg State College in Communications in 1981, and then earned a B.A degree in English as well. From 1982 onwards, Salvatore started writing and cherishing it as he wrote more. During the earlier years of his writing career, author Salvatore had to work for numerous jobs. However, he finally settled down to write on a full time basis in 1990. There is a collection of author Salvatore established at Fitchberg State College, Fitchburg, Massachusetts. This collection contains Salvatore’s manuscripts, letters, professional papers, etc. Author Salvatore was born in the year 1959 in Massachusetts. He is happily married and lives with his lovely wife named Diane and 3 children in his native place in Massachusetts. As Salvatore’s family is very fond of pet animals, they have 3 Japanese Chins, 4 cats, and several dogs in their home. Salvatore remains active in his community. He serves as one of the trustees of a local library located in Leominster. In addition to this, Salvatore has participated in several regional conferences of America’s Library Association. He likes to talk on subjects involving Adventure Fantasy. He says that he is a big fan of some prominent authors and likes to read their work from time to time to get inspiration. Those writers in his favorites’ list include Geoffrey Chaucer, Sartre, Mark Twain, Shakespeare, Fritz Leiber, JRR Tolkien, James Joyce, Ian Flemming, etc. Whenever author Salvatore is not busy with his writing works, he likes to be in the company of his loving family, take long walks, play softball, and play games.

The debut book of this particular series written by R A Salvatore is entitled ‘Homeland’. It was released by the Wizards of Coast publication in the year 2005, after its first release in 1990. Author Salvatore has done the setting of this book’s story in a fictional world of Forgotten Worlds. The opening sequence of the book shows the exotic Menzoberranzan. This vast city is depicted as the home of the prince of Icewind Dale, Drizzt Do’Urden, the dark elf. Drizzt lives with his kin of dark elves in this vile world and grows into a mature being. However, it turns out that Drizzt develops certain qualities that are not commonly possessed by his kins. One such quality is honor, which seems to be highly absent from the unprincipled society that he lives in. Now, Drizzt wonders whether he will be able to survive that does not believe in honor and rejects integrity. The story proceeds further to show that Drizzt goes on to become a legend after overcoming his constant struggles. The unique world described by author Salvatore looks quite great to read about. One more important character mentioned in the story is Vierna. She is shown as the sister of Drizzt, and just like him she too resists the Drow society. With her small role, Vierna managed to entertain the readers a lot. Her character looks quite compelling, although she is not depicted among the major characters. Overall, the book is very interesting and is a value for every penny spent on it.

The next installment of this fantasy series is called ‘Exile’. It was also published by Wizards of the Coast in 2006. This book features the main characters in the form of Malice Do Urdern, Briza Do Urden, Drizzt, Belwar Dissengulp, Vierna, etc. At the beginning of the story of the book, it is depicted that Drizzt is forced to go into exile. He is ordered not to come back to the country and is left with no other choice other than wandering the tunnel-mazes haunted by evil elves of the Underdark. Initially, Drizzt finds it difficult to live being an elf. He becomes friends with some of his own kind and finds happiness in their company. But soon, things take a different turn, resulting in his exile. Drizzt struggles for his survival, trying to find ways to tackle the evil elves. This book is filled with a lot of action sequences, making the readers enjoy every bit of it. The character of Drizzt is again shown having depth in it. This book provides a decent read and keeps the readers intrigued till the very end. It managed to become successful as it found the support of the lovers of fantasy stories. Author Salvatore too received a great boost with this book’s success.
