The American Young Adult fiction author Leigh Bardugo has been making huge waves within the industry for some time now, all due to the initial impact she made with her strong and powerful titles. Turning the heads of those in Hollywood, she is heading up as her career grows stronger and stronger with each subsequent release. Not only does she have an audience among younger readers, but she also has a receptive group of adults who are avid followers of hers as well.
Early and Personal Life
Born in Jerusalem Leigh Bardugo then went onto to spend her upbringing in America where she gained a passion for writing and the written word from an early age. Focusing on fantasy, she always retained a keen eye for what made people tick and how they functioned, something which would serve her writing career well. Growing up in the city of Los Angeles helped her here, as she took in much from her surrounding environment, always putting it back into her work.
Attending the prestigious Yale University, she graduated with a first class education, which was instrumental in her writing career that was to follow later on. With the necessary tools she applied herself diligently to her craft, refining and honing her voice in the following years to come. Gaining experience within the industry as well, she was able to set about establishing her voice, thus giving her material an even greater degree of insight.
Prior to working full-time as a writer she worked on her craft through her time as a journalist, which taught her a different set of writing skills. She has also worked in advertising as well, along with a more recent role in special-effects and make-up, which all add to her creative repertoire. With a variety of roles behind her, she has always kept herself busy, expanding her skill-set and gaining a greater level of insight into the creative process.
Taking time out to sing in her band during her spare time, Leigh Bardugo has a strong artistic flair which runs throughout her work. Living in Hollywood she continues to write though, with a vast number of books being brought out, adding to her many series. With plenty more titles planned on the horizon, she is showing no signs of stopping anytime soon, as her writing career grows from strength-to-strength.
Writing Career
In 2012 she released her first book, which was titled Shadow and Bone, and it was to be part of the ongoing Grisha Trilogy. This particular series went onto to achieve a prime place on the New York Times bestseller list after its great success with fans. She also began writing her Six of Crows series recently as well, a success which she will likely replicate as time goes on, only having released the first one so far.
With her work now being translated into a variety of different languages too, it seems her success is going international as well as national. Gaining both critical and commercial success, largely due to her awards and bestselling status, she’s managed to garner a huge amount of attention. As more and more fans flock to her work, it appears her success will continue from now on into the foreseeable future for some time yet.
Shadow and Bone
Originally published on the 5th of June in 2012, this was to be the first book from Leigh Bardugo, as she introduced herself to the world. With it being the first in the series, it was to start the franchise for a line of young adult novels that continues to run to this day. Setting up the initial premise and the characters, it perfectly manages to capture both the style and the tone that Bardugo is aiming for, giving it the ideal sense of relevancy that it needs.
Featuring Alina Starkov as its central protagonist, it starts with her as seeming somewhat ordinary, as she never has really excelled at anything in particular. She is both headstrong and determined though, and is instrumental in securing peace for her nation of Ravka after it has been torn asunder leaving it fractured and broken. Acting as a strong central character, she draws the young readers in through her positive depiction of a young woman up against the more dangerous elements. After her regiment is attacked on the Fold leaving a best friend of hers brutally injured, she discovers herself to hold a power that is instrumental in their fight, as they unlock the secrets of the Grisha. Can they heal the damage made by the Shadow Fold? Will Alina survive her ordeal? What will become of them all as they uncover the secrets of the shadow and bone?
Six of Crows
Coming out in 2015 on the 28th of July, this was to be the beginning of the Six of Crows series overall, a long-running franchise that is planned for the future. Showing Leigh Bardugo at the height of her talents, she’s clearly come a long way since her first debut release. Capturing the essence of what she’s going for perfectly, this manages to deliver a strong sense of what it’s all about and what to expect in the near future.
This time featuring Kaz Brekker as its central protagonist, it manages to take this franchise in a somewhat different direction to what’s come before. Out for himself initially, he must make some fateful decisions, as things might never be the same again after he is faced with a key proposition that could potentially change everything. An up and coming criminal by trade, it is the prospect of a deadly heist that could ultimately be his downfall and threaten all life as he knows it to be. The trouble is that he wont be able to pull this particular heist off alone, so he must enlist the help of a crew to assist him in his endeavor and save the world along with making Kaz rich. Will they be able to manage it without killing one another? Can they do it undetected? What will become of the six of crows?
