Leine Basso is a series of novels of crime and suspense thrillers by DV Berkom, the bestselling author also known for the” Kate Jones” series. The first novel of the Leine Basso series was “Serial Date” that was first published in 2012. Berkom has asserted that her love for creating kick ass and resilient women leads comes from an addiction to reading thrillers, mysteries, and spy novels, and a longing to have a female lead that would rival the mainly male protagonist of those novels. DV was born in the Midwest and got her bachelors in political science, before she migrated to Mexico where she lived in a sailboat. She spent the next few years touring Mexico and engaging in all manner of adventures in a variety of locations that could very well have been movie sets. She wrote her first novel “Bad Spirits” of the “Kate Jones” series in 2010 and was hooked. The novel that she published as an Indie author in online serial format became a popular novel reigniting her interest in becoming a career author. DV Berkom lives with her husband in the Pacific North West alongside a few imaginary characters she likes to pull from out of thin air.
The lead protagonist of the “Leine Basso” series is an ex assassin named Leine Basso. Basso is a strong willed and independent woman that comes with a strong exterior and emotional and soft interior. She is a super smart woman that always knuckles down to do her job no matter how hard or complicated it may seem. When we are first introduced to Leine, she has quit her job as a government assassin following a heart wrenching betrayal from her boss. The betrayal would go on to have consequences for Leine throughout the course of the novels, influencing how she lives her life and her relationship with her daughter and other significant persons in her life. She wants to have a normal life of having a chance at happiness with a man she can love and trust with her life, though this may be tougher than she imagined given her history. Nonetheless, even as she had quit her job as an assassin she still got excellent skills which means she makes quite a good living for herself taking on private investigations projects. She also does not do so bad at love as she is involved with the swoon worthy detective Santiago Jensen. However, she is still haunted by several cold cases form her past that haunt her days. But Leine is never one to be kept tied down by anything, as she takes up a variety of jobs from protecting A list actors, tracking down kidnapped teenagers in Africa, and another two that had gone missing in Mexico City. Overall Leine Basso is a brave, compassionate, beautiful and smart heroine who has made mistakes in the past and learned from them to become better.
DV Berkom does a great job balancing romance, multiple story-lines, action and human trafficking, perhaps one of the most important issues of contemporary society. With the usual wit and grace, she conveys serious issues regarding the issues of kidnapping, ransom taking, and human trafficking without making the novels seem preachy or too heavy. Nonetheless, despite talking about highly emotive issues, the novels of the Leine Basso series are thrillers just as much as other thrillers in the genre. They come with language, violence, and sex ,even as Berkom does not hold back from portraying the true face of human trafficking. The novel is a sexy, gripping, and fast paced read that will have anyone turning the pages and dreading the inevitable end of the story. These are some of the best bedside or beach reads that are great to thumb through on a lazy night.
“Serial Date” the first novel of the series introduces Leine Basso who just got a job working security for “Serial Date”, a hit reality TV series that has been a massive hit in Los Angeles. The show involves beautiful twenty-something women that date men pretending to be serial killers, though they are in fact ex-convicts. The job pays $2000 a week and given that she is desperate for money she cannot turn it down, even if it brings back some terrible memories. The show has already had one of the girls murdered, mutilated, and her body dumped in a closet on set. Given that the killer is yet to be apprehended, the show runners decided to hire someone skilled in such cases. Leine has to determine if the killer is an outsider or one of the ex-cons who are not beyond such a crime. She is working alongside a handsome detective named Santiago Jensen, who does not believe the bachelors are not responsible, despite all the evidence against them. Soon they find a letter that is supposedly from the killer that tells of a very clear agenda. The killer then strikes closer to home when Leine’s daughter goes missing with the person claiming to be responsible for the murders asserting that he took her. It has been years since Leine saw her daughter, given that she has never wanted anything to do with her mother. To track down and rescue her daughter, Leine has to reconcile herself with her identity, which is a terrifying proposition. The situation worsens when the killer turns out to be on a quest for revenge for her past actions.
“Bad Traffick” the second novel of the series is an award-winning novel of the series that is a sequel to the first though it can be read as a standalone. Leine the former assassin teams up with a homicide detective, and together they go on a quest to find her missing girl that they need to find soon if they are not to lose her forever. Her past comes back to haunt Leine, as she is named as a person of interest in three unresolved murders that she knows nothing about. To get Santiago’s help in her troubles, she agrees to become temporary bodyguard for Miles Fournier, an A list actor who had been Jensen’s charge. It is not long before Miles receives a message from a woman who says she is his long-lost sister and claiming that her daughter had been taken by traffickers. Leine now has to race against time and confront her demons to forge ahead and rescue the girl before the traffickers move her on.
