Libbie Hawker is a popular American writer of literary fiction and historical fiction novels. She is known to have written several mind-blowing book series in her writing career, including the White Lotus Trilogy, Old Seattle, The She-King, and The Book of Coming Forth by Day. In all, Hawker has penned over a dozen novels and short stories. Her stories mostly feature detailed information about time & place and complex characters. Whenever Hawker is not working on her novels or reading, she can be found on her one-acre farm located in San Juan Island. Hawker likes to work on her farm all day long. She is a seed-saver and has plans to begin a permaculture teaching institution and a sheep dairy in the future. The other activities that Hawker likes to take up during her spare times include sewing, baking cookies, and holding podcasts on her favorite cartoon characters from the 80s. Currently, Hawker resides near Friday Harbor, Washington along with her loving husband and a couple of cats. She keeps posting images of her cats and island pics on her Instagram account.

Hawker was born in Rexburg, Idaho. She spent her early years growing up in the rural environs of Eastern Idaho and greater Seattle. The other places that she has lived in include Salt Lake City, Bellingham, Tacoma, etc. As a writer, Hawker loves to write about places and characters that excite her. She takes great inspiration from the region near the Rocky Mountain because of its bleak natural beauty. Hawker’s writing is also influenced by Puget Sound’s fascinating history. Prior to trying her luck in the writing field, Hawker worked for a wide range of bizarre jobs. She has held posts as a zoo-keeper, animal trainer, yarn dyer, dog handler, caretaker of dementia patients, bookseller, wedding photographer, etc.

For honing her writing skills, Hawker had started taking up 2 classes at college at the same time. But soon, she realized that there is no need for a college degree to fulfill her dreams. So, she opted out of further studies after obtaining a diploma in high school and has written stories out of her imagination since then. When she tried her hand at writing novels for the first time, she struggled for the first 3 years to get her books published. Her initial works were written under 2 different pseudonyms. When Hawker could not get any success in entering the mainstream publishing industry, she decided to become an independent publisher. To her surprise, her efforts began to bear fruit and she motivated her to write her future novels under her original name. Currently, Hawker writes on a full-time basis and self-publishes her books. Hawker takes great pride in knowing that she has finally taken full control of the writing career that she has always dreamed to have. The writers who influenced Hawker throughout her literary career include Hilary Mantel, George R.R. Martin, Vladimir Nabokov, Annie Dillard, Chris Onstad, and songwriter Neko Case. A few of the written works of author Hawker are available under the pen name of L.M. Ironside.

A very successful book series written by author Libbie Hawker in her career is known as the Old Seattle series. It is comprised of a total of two books released between 2016 and 2018. The events of this series take place in the latter half of the 19th century in Seattle and revolve around the Civil War. Hawker has mentioned the primary characters in the roles of Asa Mercer, Josephine, Sophronia, Dovey, Lou Graham, Lauretta, Amber, Jiayi, etc. The debut book of this series is entitled ‘Mercer Girls’. It is set in the year 1864 in Lowell, Massachusetts; and Seattle. Initially, it is depicted that the Civil War has affected the downtrodden town of Lowell badly. The most affected the women of this ruined town. In such desperate times, Asa Mercer arrives in Lowell with a special purpose. He seeks the high-minded ladies of Lowell to take them to Seattle as mail-order brides. He promises them a high living standard, one that they are not going to get in Lowell in a hundred years.

Josephine, Dovey, and Sophronia agree to travel with Asa Mercer to Seattle. They see this chance as an opportunity to break the barriers of their downtrodden lives and have a new beginning. However, their hopes of a trouble-free life in Seattle get shattered when the ghosts of their past lives come to haunt them. They feel that they are facing the most difficult test of their life for survival. And just when all hopes begin to fade, a chance encounter with a popular suffragist result in their salvation. Dovey, Sophronia, and Josephine know it very well that they have to stick together and support one another with all their strength if they want to survive their pasts and the untamed new city.

The second installment of this series is called ‘Madam’. It was published by the Running Rabbit publication in 2018. This novel’s story takes place in Seattle in 1888. It is mentioned that the once-booming city gets stripped of its glories because of numerous riots and economic ruin. People think that it is time for reinvention and wait for the right person with capital and guts to turn the tables for Seattle. Just then, Miss Lou Graham arrives from San Francisco. She has enormous wealth and shows interest in rebuilding the city from the ground level. Lou Graham is also witty and courageous enough to deal with the powerful political party called Reformers that has led to Seattle on the edge of disaster. Later, Lou comes across Amber and gets caught between her dream and love.

Lou is already facing a lot of challenges in her attempt to revive the city, and if the word gets out that her love interest is a woman, she might not be able to take the backlash. While struggling with her dream and desires, Lou Graham finds unexpected friends, each undergoing struggles of their own. Jiayi, Emerson, Lauretta, and Amber come forward to share Lou’s burden. Soon after, Seattle gets stricken by another unimaginable disaster, making Lou Graham and her friends come out of hiding and face another struggle. They know that if they continue to hold hands and stay together, they will succeed in defeating shame and deception, thereby achieving the dream that all of them have seen for the great city.
