Lighthouse Library Mystery Series

Lighthouse Library is a mystery series by Eva Gates. The series is set in Bodie Island with its breathtaking views and renowned lighthouse library. It introduces Lucy Richardson, a young woman looking to re-write her story. After a trip to this island turns into an exciting job opportunity, Jane makes the small village her home and enjoys every moment of it. However, her time here will be marked by several murders that she will be involved in solving. This is not to say that she is not going to enjoy her stay, far from it. Working in the lighthouse library has always been her dream, and she is happy to spend her days here, surrounded by all the books that she wants to read.

By Book or By Crook

By Book or By Crook comes first in the Lighthouse Library Mystery. The book introduces Lucy Richardson, a young woman who enjoys her job work in the Harvard library. However, her parents are starting to get to her with their demands. Her family wants her to get married to her long-time boyfriend and son to her father’s law partner. When Lucy’s boyfriend succumbs to the pressure and tries to propose, she knows it is time to break off the relationship. This is no easy decision, and Lucy finds herself in great need of a break from her family and now ex-fiancé. Lucy calls on her aunt Ellen, and she hopes that a short visit to North Carolina would help clear her mind.

Lucy’s retreat turns into an excellent opportunity when she is offered a job in the lighthouse library. This library tucked in the Bodie Island has always been Lucy’s favorite place, and she is more than thrilled to start working there. Unfortunately, not everyone is happy for her. One member of the board, in particular, dislikes her, and he doesn’t hide this from her. When this man tells Lucy about his plans to ensure that she doesn’t remain in the lighthouse library for long, she cannot help but wonder why he is so mean. Unfortunately, this man turns up dead a few days after this outburst, and Lucy and her boss are listed among the top suspects.

Lucy is no expert on the law, but years of watching her father and his law partners had taught her a thing or two about criminal investigations. She is determined to clear her and the boss’s name, but she knows that this will not be an easy task. Things get more complicated when Jane Austen’s novels that had just arrived at the library when Lucy started her job begin to disappear one after another. What is the connection between these disappearances and the murder that has put Lucy on the spot? Can this amateur detective find the killer early enough to avoid more killings?

By Book or By Crook is an exhilarating cozy mystery story set in a charming little town. You will fall in love with Lucy from the start and keep hoping that she will find a way out of her tricky situation. Unlike most first books in a series where you spend your time getting acquainted with the characters, this one has a serious mystery going on. The pace, narration, and plot are done right, making this an exhilarating read. This book is about 370 pages long and is a perfect choice for a lazy weekend read.

Booked for Trouble

Booked for Trouble is the second installment in the Lighthouse Library Mysteries. Lucy’s job as a librarian is the Bodie Island is becoming easier and more enjoyable. The crowds coming to see the Jane Austen novels had died down, allowing Lucy enough time to enjoy leisurely walks on the beach and exciting evenings talking about books with like-minded people. She is also getting close with the library cat and has two handsome men fighting for her attention. To an outsider, Lucy is living the dream. However, she is still experiencing some resistance from people who think that she doesn’t deserve her current Lighthouse library position.

Lucy’s socialite mother, Suzanne, drops in unexpectedly, further complicating her life. Suzzanne wants Lucy back in Boston, working to patch things up with her ex-fiancé. Lucy’s mind is made up, and she knows there is no way she is accompanying her mother back to Boston. However, like any good child, she entertains her mother, hoping that she would grow tired and let her be. After a very public fight between Suzanne and her former classmate Karen, something dreadful happens. Karen is found dead right outside the library, putting Suzanne on top of the list of suspects.

Not one to sit back and wait, Lucy takes matters into her own hands. She knows she must move quickly if she is to keep her dear mother out of prison. Fortunately, Lucy has the town detective on her side. She will be busy trying to find out who would want to kill Karen and act like her mother committed the crime. Karen has a long list of suspects to work through, and it is not until the end of the book that things start to fall in place. The addition of Suzanne to the cast gives this book quite an edge. Sure, she is no friendly woman, but she is Lucy’s mum, and it seems like trouble follows her everywhere.

Booked for Trouble is another exciting read that takes the reader deeper into Bodie Island. The mystery comes with a few twists that draw you deeper and keep you curious to see what happens next. Once again, Lucy and the lighthouse library remain at the heart of the story. Her loft, right above the library and with a great view of the ocean, is every reader’s dream. A romantic triangle featuring Lucy, the detective, and the mayor is evident despite Suzzanne’s efforts to thwart any romantic notions. Who among these two men is Lucy going to choose? Will she find Karen’s killer early enough to prevent her poor mother’s jailing? Read this captivating story for these answers and more.
