Lily Koppel is a bestselling author of literary fiction that is best known for “The Astronaut Wives Club” and “The Red Leather Diary.” The former was a blockbuster work that would ultimately be the inspiration for a television series from ABC by the same name.
Koppel’s work has been praised in many places and she is working on several other projects. While she was born in Chicago, she moved to New York where she wrote for the likes of “Glamour,” “The New York Times Magazine,” “Huffington Post,” and the “Daily Beast.”
Lily Koppel has been described as a leggy, blonde, and tall woman who looks like a 1960s mod girl rather than a New York journalist. However, she always tells people that they should never judge a book by its cover.

Koppel loves to call herself equal parts a Jewish writer, extraordinary dumpster diver, and writer. In her work, she loves to inject her own stories and experiences and those of others. This she has asserted is what makes her stories so relatable.

Koppel was born and raised in Chicago, even though were parents were initially from New York before they moved to New York.

Her father then used to work at the Merc as a trader in the mold of Gordan Gekko. As such, Lily Koppel grew up staring at the John Hancock and the Sears Tower and going to Lincoln Park Zoo.

When she was little she used to take the bus with his mother every Friday as they headed to the State Street location of the Marshall Fields department store that even then still felt like a relic.

She always found the place so magical especially because of the ice cream parlor and the white chairs with the heart design on the backs and mossy green and pink leather cushioned seats. Koppel used to get the hot fudge with vanilla ice cream and always had it with a scoop of pistachio.

In her early years, she went to kindergarten and high school at the same school that was part of the University of Chicago establishment. She remembers it being very Hogwart-like with mad brilliant teachers and gargoyle statues.

Lily was something of a bad kid in school but was a hardworking student despite his wild side. At 16 years old, she got her first ID and used to go out clubbing a the Buddha bar while lying that she was a graduate student at the University of Chicago.

Later on, Lily Koppel went to Oxford and Barnard College and graduated to become a journalist. While she currently lives in New York, she has said that she still feels a strong connection to the Midwest where she grew up.

Koppel has been living in New York for more than fifteen years since she left Barnard College in 1999. Whenever people ask Lily where she is from, she loves to say that she is from Chicago but now lives in New York.

During her years growing up, she used to complain a lot about not having anything to do in Chicago. She still remembers that all her friends wanted to have more glamour in their lives and this is perhaps what made her apply to Barnard College in New York.
It was after her graduation and when she was working as a journalist that she had the inspiration for writing her debut work “The Red Leather Diary.”

Lily Koppel’s work “The Red Leather Diary” tells of hows the author found a discarded diary in the dumpster while she was living in a house in Upper West Side Manhattan. The diary brings to life the forgotten but glamorous life of an extraordinary young woman.
For more than 50 years, a red leather diary has been languishing spent in an old suitcase while its cover was crumbling into little flakes. A thorough sweep of a New York Apartment block unearths the lost treasure and the little diary and the woman who owns it is given a second lease on life.

Lily Koppel is a young journalist working for the New York Times who finds the diary. The diary paints a very detailed picture of New York during the 1930s according to the experience of the author.
These include summer excursions to the Catskills, riding horses in Central Park and the author’s obsession with a woman that had to be one of the most popular avant-garde actresses of the time.
From 1929 to 1934, the writer never missed a single entry. When she opens the lock on the suitcase, she finds herself on a journey into the past where she meets privileged women meeting at Schcrafft’s for tea, goes to El Morocco to toast the night, and dances at the Hotel Pennsylvania.
Turning over the brittle pages of the diary, Lily is captivated by the life of the young woman whose emotions and intimate thoughts fill the diary.

“The Astronaut Wives Club” by Lily Koppel is an intriguing and insightful look into the lives of the wives of the astronauts during the 1960s. The story is told from the point of view of the wives of the astronauts who had to deal with the glare of the cameras and the journalists that followed their every move.

The feats of the astronauts would make their wives celebrities too, as the media become very much interested in their lives. They would be guests at the White House and be featured in many articles in prestigious magazines such as Life Magazine.
Nonetheless, these women were a product of their time, and as such, people expected the to raise perfect families, even if their husbands were away most of the time living in space.

The women were under strict orders from the higher-ups at NASA to ensure certain standards at home so that the astronauts would not endure any stress when they were at home.

Any deviation from the perfect storybook family facade could put an astronaut’s career in jeopardy. This sometimes included an instruction to ignore any evidence of infidelity and they would only confide to other astrowives.
Ultimately, sharing their troubles with each other would result in a very tight-knit Houston community of astrowives.
