About Lin-Manuel Miranda
As an artist, composer, performer, and author, American writer Lin-Manuel Miranda is well known to many across the world. Highly regarded for his musicals and performances, he’s a huge celebrity with a lot of star power, and for good reason. Featuring heavily across the Broadway, he’d write and star in his own musicals, performing to packed audiences on a regular basis. This has seen his work grow beyond, as he’s gone on to compose for huge Hollywood productions, as well as starring in them too.

His work has become a cultural phenomenon, with the show ‘Hamilton’ being his crowning achievement, as a massive Broadway event. The impact of this show has been huge, with it previously playing to an audience at the White House, making its production going down in history. Many have really taken to its songs, as he’s combined modern rap and hip-hop with the musical, taking it in a bold new and exciting direction. Reaching beyond the stage too, the show has been filmed, with a movie adaptation of the show being made publicly available for wide release.
Now he’s also starring in Hollywood, featuring in musical films such as ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ for Disney, where he both sings and dances. Composing the soundtrack for many of these films too, he’s a gifted performer and singer, along with his acting on-screen. This has found him a legion of fans worldwide, as he’s fast become one of the most successful artists within his field to date. His books to back his work up is no exception either, as he shares not only behind the scenes stories, but his many thoughts and ideas as well.

Early and Personal Life:
Born in 1980 on the 16th of January, he would grow up in New York City, specifically in the neighbourhood of Inwood. Being of Puerto Rican descent, he would spend one month each year at his grandparents living in Vega Alta, in Puerto Rico. This would come to shape a lot of his work, influencing both his outlook on life, and his creativity as an artist.

Attending Hunter College Elementary School, followed by Hunter College High School, he was a gifted student from the beginning. Going on to Wesleyan University, he’d create what would be his first Broadway musical there ‘In The Heights’ in 1999, initially performing it for the university. Married to the lawyer Vanessa Nadal in 2010, they’d both have their first son, Sebastian, in 2014, and Miranda continues to write and perform to this day.

Writing Career:
First composing and performing his stage debut in 1999, he’d take to performing his own musical ‘In The Heights’, which would go on to feature on Broadway in 2010. Along with this he’d perform in a number of other plays that he’d write and compose for, from short one-act musicals such as ’21 Chump Street’ in 2014, to co-composer of ‘Bring it On: The Musical’ in 2012. It was in 2015 though, that he’d really make his name writing and performing in ‘Hamilton’ as Alexander Hamilton, creating a book and film from the production. Composing for films such as Moana, he’d also star in ‘Mary Poppins Returns’, making him an instantly recognizable celebrity with a lot of star power. Working as an actor now too, he’ll continue to grow as an artist, author, and performer, with a lot more still to come.

Hamilton: The Revolution
Brought out initially through the ‘Grand Central Publishing’ label, this would first come out on the 6th of August in 2015. It’s a stand-alone title that works as a non-fiction account of everything involved with Hamilton as a live Broadway production. Working with the cultural critic Jeremy McCarter, they both pen the book together, making it a wholly complete title.

Charting the success of Hamilton, this book seeks to document the complete history of the event as a true cultural phenomenon. Getting to the heart of the musical, it looks at everything that took place around its production, giving an account of it as a whole. This definitely makes it a must for any fans of the show and the music, whether they’ve seen it live on stage, or watched the film, as there really is something for everyone.
From it’s development in its early stages, through to its showing at the White House, on to its first live performance on Broadway six years later; it really does feature everything. Complete with footnotes and interviews from fellow leading figures within the industry, it fully breaks down the production’s place within modern culture. Charting the journey of the show, there’s also plenty of images to accompany the text too, providing the reader with a more than comprehensive account. Whether they’ve simply heard about it in passing wanting to know more, or a fan completely immersed in the world, this is a must for readers all over.

In The Heights
This would be an earlier musical produced by Miranda, as he’d write prior to going on to finding fame with Hamilton. The book adaptation of the musical, with all the collected music and lyrics, would first be published through the ‘Applause Theatre and Cinema Book Publishers’ label. It would be the author Quiara Alegria Hudes who would adapt the musical into book form, working alongside Miranda.

This would be an earlier work from the award winning composer, with it being well known in its own right, having toured extensively. With themes of family and loyalty, it’s a heart-warming story that definitely hits all the right notes on a consistent basis throughout. It’s also a fascinating read for fans of Manuel as a composer, seeing where he’s come from, and how he’s developed as an artist.

Set in Washington Heights, this focuses on the story of a vibrant, but tight-knit community there, where everyone knows one another. Combining three generations of music there, it celebrates the rich history of the neighbourhood and everything they have to offer. Telling the stories of the people who live there, it brings to life the character of the community and the vibrant location itself. Many might see it as simply the lead-up to Hamilton, but it definitely stands on its own two feet, with something interesting to say.
